Ive been offered, all for the same price the following:

Saab 9000 i 130bhp, good nick, £1000 spent last year on maintenance/repair

Volvo 440 Turbo 120bhp

Audi 80 saloon, no rust, good solid car.

Which should I get? Ok, a bit vague, but Im after a nice temp car to drive round in while i save for my 200SX monster.

YOur comments on those appreciated...

I'd go for the Saab. They're built to last and have strong engines and transmissions. There's enough specialist about to be able to get em fixed without it costing an arm and a leg also.

The Volvo's engine was built by Renault if I remember rightly and isn't too reliable. Plus the 400 is deadly dull to drive.

Don't know much about the Audi I'm afraid.

Audi Audi Audi :)

Saabs are nice, eccentric but nice. However, what has been done that warrents 1k of repair?

Personally I would say the Audi

Saab or Audi mate your choice, both very good cars and pretty reliable. Parts prices are good through german+swedish too.

Im on my second saab now, the first one i had was a 170k miler 9000 i picked up for peanuts, I px'd that for the 900s I have now.

They're not exciting to drive but they are bloody good for long distance work, I can fit the dogs in the back and enough gear for a weekend in Scotland and still do a relaxing 90+mph up the m/way :)

sounds exactly what im after.

Ive been driving a hard suspension, stripped out pug 106 for a while with few creature comforts...

so a couple of weeks with a nice comfey trouble free saloon is what im after!

Gonna go get it monday :)

Gotta be the audi mate ... reliable, solid build, not too shabby looking, and plenty of cheap spares around for them.

If you don't want to go for the Audi then go for the Saab... decent build, another solid car, just a bit rank in the looks department.

Avoid the Volvo.... you'd be better off taking the bus.

Audi.

Purely because my dad had a Saab 9000 and it was no end of trouble. Electrical stuff mainly.

A few years ago I fancied an Audi 90 2.3 but insurance was a bit too much.

I'm in exactly the same position and am driving a '91 Audi 80 16v Sport. Fast(ish), comfy and great motorway mile muncher.

Looked at Saab 900 & 9000 and Vitesse but went for the Audi.

130k miles and still good.

Moved a step closer last week when my wife upgraded from her hatch to an estate, thus leaving the way clear for my next car...;)

Good Luck with your choice... happy saving

Ally

Yeah, Im going for the saab simply because the audi is now out of my budget (hes upped the price)

I know the audi is good as my family has owned them since the 80s (I think weve had a total of about 9 on our drive) ranging fromt he early GT coupe's to the modern A4 2.8 quattro now sitting on the drive.
Our Audi 80 sport lasted 360k on the one engine, i believe it was reconditioned and tuned after we sold it and its used as a track car!

My dad hates Saabs however, hes an Audi fan, ah well I need a reliable car to drive! :)

cheers guys (note i ruled out the volvo all together!)

The problem I fear that I'm going to have is that the Audi won't die when when I need it to.. without some encouragement;)

It has little £ value, so no real reason to change it if it is running well.

When the funds are available for the 200, I fear the Audi may become strangely ill and need replacing and because Mrs McC has the estate car, I am going for something less practical:D

lol bought a 2 litre overhead cam sierra estate as the work horse!

was 120 quid, so thats less than a pound per bhp!

Its damn sturdy, will do me until i get the SX.... :)

I've mentioned my views on cheap 2litre sierras on the board before, mine was the most fun car I've had. It was a tad pricey at £250 though (2.0glsi).

Nice one mate, keep it RWD
