Hi jez/guys.

As jez will already know, I'm currently going for stage 3a, just finishing off arranging all the parts i need.
Now i'm just weighing up what i need and what problems i could encounter on the turbo change.....
Am i right in saying that the GT2871R has the exact same pick ups, orientation as the normal T28.... I'm just wondering if my existing front pipe, turbo elbow, tubular manifold and standard nissan gaskets will fit?? even down to wanting to know if the oil/water feed inlet/outlet locations are the same and the standard banjo bolts will fit, etc. i have bought a set of braided hoses from hose solutions, will these fit/reach??

Is there anything that i'm going to have to buy to specially fit the GT2871R...
Thanks.

If you're on the standard turbo at the moment the only thing you'll need to do is make the oil drain flange holes slightly further apart - we usually just drill them out to 12-13mm.

Everything else should bolt up - you may need to rotate the core a bit (can't remember) but that's very easy to do as well, if required.

Should get the turbos Thursday, so you'll have yours Friday :)

Hi Andy, am trying to find the receipt of everything I fitted to complete the job.

I went from Stage 2, so already had 555's and Jez Stage 2 chip fitted.

I already had the Apex Type 1 Tubular manifold (but not fitted), and already fitted where the Apex front decat and centre decat linked to a HKS Silent. If you do not have the Apex turbo elbow, I would buy this to prevent a restriction in your system.

I bought a full set of gaskets from Apex, standard Nissan. Think this included Manifold to turbo, turbo to elbow, elbow to front pipe. The manifold to engine gasket is multi-ply (sp?) and I was told will be reusable, which it was.

The oil/water feeds seemed to be in the standard location, and bolt straight up with one exception (see below). I actually spent about £100 on the more expensive Apex oil/water braided hoses. This is one oil pipe and two water in the braided hoses pipe. The oil one fits fine, but I'm unsure about the Apex water pipes. These are supposed to be direct fit and make the job easier, and it was a very competent mechanic working on my car, I was with him at the time, and no matter which way we tried these pipes, they always touched something, which I'm told is a no no. We used the standard water feed and return in the end which was a great fit. I'm yet to decide about fitting these, some people say the standard ones are not very good and it doesn't matter if the braided ones touch something, others say pipes must never touch anything. I'm not sure!!

The one exception mentioned above is the oil drain flange Jez also mentioned. You need to elongate the holes as they are in the wrong place, this was the only thing that was not a direct fit. If you are fairly competent (i'm not) in a workshop this is a fairly quick job.

The order I did it in was change turbo, manifold, elbow, all gaskets etc.

Then I ordered the Stage 3a upgrade from Jez, you can pay a refundable small deposit to be sent the new chips before you return the old ones to keep your car running.

When I had the chips, I then removed the old airflow meter, and fitted the new one. Getting the rubber pipe over the Z32 AFM was the WORST part. I cut about 3 fingers and burnt my foot!! You need to soak the pipe in boiling water to make it pliable, but make sure your bucket can take boiling water and doesn't spring a large leak over your left foot!!

Once you have the rubber pipe on, I then re-assembled the induction kit, airflow meter etc, found removing the FMIC hot pipe gave good access. I then fitted the Stage 3a chips in the ECU to check there wasn't a problem, meaning the last stage was to cut the end of the S14a AFM wiring plug. Make sure you have the Z32 AFM plug (about £10). You'll also need the wiring diagram, I used the one of the HD website which was great. This was the last step for me as cutting the wires is pretty final!! I then soldered the new connections up and reassembled it all.

Check everything and then go for a drive. Make sure timing is spot on as well. You'll notice slightly more lag than standard, but what you will get is huge mid range turning into 911 leaving top end. It pulls like a bastard to the red line even with standard cams at 1.2 bar.

If you want any help with the soldering etc let me know. I'll find the Apex receipt just to check what I got. I think you needed things like locking tabs etc for the turbo.

Scott.

Thanks Scott

Getting the AFM hose onto the Z32 AFM isn't that hard - I find it easier to do it cold with no lube - just work it on with a screw driver.

If you need any of the parts mentioned by Scott, or anything else for that matter (gaskets, elbows, pipe work, Z32 AFMs, plugs etc etc), we can supply :)

Hi Andy, checked the invoices last night.

In addition the the 3 gaskets mentioned, two braided coolant pipes, one braided oil pipe, plus turbo elbow, the only other thing seems to be :-

2 x Nissan Turbo Locking Tabs @ only a few quid for the pair.

I also remembered that we had to make a gasket for the oil return pipe, so it might be worth getting one of these as well.

When we fitted the Apex tubular manifold, it wasn't quite right angle wise, it makes the exhuast sit lower and hit's more speedbumps now, so jsut make sure you get it as high asyou can and fit the support bracket.

Cheers,
Scott.

Well, its all fitted and was on the rollers on sunday. I was very impressed with the results. i'd have been even more impressed if i'd have set the boost duty and feedback speeds up correctly on my apexi AVCR DOH!:annoyed:
i was most impressed with the AFR graph, i think mine was one of the neatest AFR curves there! just shows how good this 3a map is...
Looking at the boost curve, what tweeks would you do to the AVCR (if your familiar with AVCR's) it seems the tester gave up after about 6000rpm as the power was tailing off.... is that right or is that down to the AVCR boost duty and/or another problem?

nice to meet you the other night....

nice graph too. is the place you had it tested somewhere out on the wirral?

would you recommend them? i want to get my power fc mapped after chrismas iff possible and they do it, just wondering if they are any good, or i should just go to RB Motorsport down the road instead!!
