View Full Version : Good price for an AE86?
This is a car which I am interested in:
Late 87 D reg,Pearl White (with purple shine),Dim lights model, Unmarked Blue Tweed interior,99,324 miles with full Service History stamped, All previous M.O.T's,Current M.O.T till end of May 2003, Electric Sunroof, Pirahna Alarm, standard Stereo, Dixy Air Horns (Dukes of hazzard) JR Induction Filter, Bilstein 40mm Adjustable suspension, Piper exhaust, Excellent condition inside out. £2,595 no offers please
I know its not a 200 but does anybody have any idea if this is a decent price for a corolla? Sounds prety dear to me but I can't find any others for sale.
they vary wildly in price mate. They are as rare as rockin horse poo to find a one cheap nowadays.
You're prolly best off dropping a pm to Pazza - he knows em more than most, being an owner :)

I've seen a few AE86s around at a massive variety in costs. It's really all down to condition.
The mechanicals are pretty sound, but they really do tend to rust, so if you're interested give it a VERY thorough going over.
If it's rust free, probably is worth the money he's asking (because it's a supply and demand market and people really want AE86s).
Don't get me wrong, I don't think they're anywhere near as good as a 200, (bearing in mind I paid less for my 93 S13), but if you want something like this, possibly worth considering.
They do handle well, and make a lovely noise, but be aware that they're really not that quick in a straightline (roughly 9secs to 60).
Would I be right in saying that the 86 has no power steering? The extra feedback and the mechanical strength are the reasons that I think I would go for one of these over a 200. Insurance is cheaper and it probably won't depreciate much either. Not too worried about lack of speed because I have a much faster carr too.:D
I have only seen pictures of this 86 and it looks totally mint but I'll be sure to check thoroughly for rust if I go to see it.

Is that paint an aftermarket spray Job (ie Pearlescent)? If so, i would throw alot of caution into the bodywork side of things, if its been re-sprayed then the chances are that it might have been done properly and the car wont be rusty and it will be solid underneath.
But then, there is the other side of the coin, in which the car has been sprayed but the rust underneath was not taken care of properly. It may look OK now but in reality the car is rusting from the inside out. Take care on this.
Engines, Suspension etc etc can be replaced but body parts are getting harder to find these days, so as mentioned above you want to check over the entire car, inside, outside and underneath, anywhere you can look. There will be some rust, its un-avoidable in an old car, but it shouldnt be excessive and only in certain places...
The most common place for rust is the rear tailgate (inside too), this often lets in Water which can lead to the inside of the boot getting a little rusty. The side windows also let in some water at times, and cause the inner arches to go rusty. You can see this if you pull the back seats out. The rear pockets are an area of concearn also, check them over from the inside of the boot (where the Jack sits) and from underneath. It has MOT so it should be OK by rights, but when looking at any AE86, check everything thouroughly.
The MOT's, milage and the FSH sounds nice however so it could be a solid car and indeed worth the money (to the right person).
Or you could swap your Skyline for my car :D :D
Hope this helps a little.. Its up to you to decide on wether you really want to pay that kind of money for the car. As mentioned, prices differ wildly..... Next week you might see one for half that money, and the week after you wont see one at all.
Give it a drive and see what you think!

PS: Im not the authority on AE86's, far from it! These are just things ive picked up on with my tme in ownership.. Could be alot more to it yet!
