View Full Version : Is it true that???
Hi guys,
Im big in the RC model scene, own a couple of cars and a couple of planes.
Recently I got my hands on the Simulator which is apparently the best and have been practising my flying skills and just for a laugh I have been using choppers with no luck but my mate whos an expert can fly upside down.
So Question is, can a REAL helicopter hover upside down??
Cheers, Yodi
don't think they can hover upside down, but can do loops and stuff.
so can RC heli's HOVER upside down? i thought the blades would be pushing air the wrong way for it to hover?
RC choppers can deffo fly upside down, seen it with my own eyes in real life, on the simulator and on Sky digital a programme called remote madness.
Cheers, Yod
a helicopter CANNOT hover upside down... if you think about it the blades would have to spin the other way to produce lift, even if it could get upside down.. it aint gonna happen basically :P
some can do loops and rolls, but those are only the small manoeuverable ones, like our own Navys Lynx..
Is that definate that they cant then?
Also I assume your only talking about real choppers.
Do you own a chopper then?

cant adjust the trim of the blades then can you :p
you can adjust trim, but they cant pitch the blades down enough to generate the required lift to keep it in a hover if it were upside down

ever heard of modification ????
CANNOT is a dangerous word
modification ??
i thought we were talking about REAL helicopters not RC ones here ??
i challenge you to name one chopper that can hover upside down, be it civvy or military ;)
easy sfuff --------------- flymo !
seriously tho theoretically it is possible but only if you find someone skillled enough to mod the chopper and somebody stupid enough to try it :D
surely if you adjust the blades to enable upside down hovering, it wouldnt be able to lift off in the first place :D
i disagree Chris.. i dont think its possible... although the concept of pitching the blades to produce lift in the opposite direction is valid, you have to take into account the massive instability of the aircraft once it is upside down.. it would be like balancing a cricket ball on a needle and expecting it to stay there..
So my conclusion is that its not possibly without some serious mods but even thats not guaranted.
Wheres as an RC Chopper can fly upside down in standard form?
Yodi
Well Chris and I have different views about whether it would work or not, i certainly wouldnt want to be in the thing when someone tried it that for sure.  :o
i can only assume the only way an RC chopper can do it is down to its lack of weight
its like the Cessna vs 747.. try and do a loop in a jumbo and youre dead, where as you can pull them off easily in a Cessna, innit :D

You'd have eto swtich the pitch from positive to negative very fast to do it.
4 Kg of model it's quite easy, 4 ton of proper chopper bit scarier i imagine.
I used to be well into planes, but kinda grew out of it, went to college now can't be arsed. Car instead now.

They have them in Australia, so I suppose the answer must be yes...
