I`ve just gotten a cushy job as a night security officer in a big software development company.
Well i get my own pc with broadband connection :) but its really low spec.
What i want to know is can i bring my pc console from home and connect it up to the broadband connection and use that instead ?(take it home with me again obviously)
I can fit an NIC network card to mine. But will i need network passwords etc? If so where on the current low spec pc will these passwords and any settings be ?
Otherwise i`m lookin at upgrading this current pc on the sly but fear i wont get far with it.
Come on any Network wizzes outhere.
Lend me a hand to get this broadband connection utilised to its full potential.
I mean (screams) FFS I COULD BE DOWNLOADING WHOLE ALBUMS AND PLAYIN CS ALL F*CKIN NIIIIGHT (breaks down) help me (falls to knees) please (bows head)......(falls forward flat on face)............................................( murmurs) ow!

What operating system is it, and do you have to log into a domain?

You will need to fit a NIC yes.. the rest depends, a bit more info about the place would be useful.

If the low spec PC you use at work asks for a username and password then you should be able to use the same username and password on your home machine when you take it in.Set up your internet to use a lan connection, and let the IP come from DHCP It could be as simple as that and your away! :)

It could be more tricky than this..depends on how their LAN is set up and the security (workstation Auditing, workstation name etc).

A word of warning. BE CAREFUL. Most IT staff will more than likely be very pissed off if they know a machine that "they" havent built configured, installed AV and secured is on their network.

windows 98
2 passwords
one to get through the start up (bios i think)
and one to get into windows.
Dont have to use a domain and really cannot see anything else going on anywhere. Just an always on connection , hit IE and i`m off.

In the network tab in control panel

Share level access control is chosen."enables you to share a password for each resource.

In I.D it gives me the computer name , workgroup and computer description details.

In CONFIGURATION it says
"client for microsoft networks is used"
In here "log on and secure network connections" is highlighted.
(when you log onto the network windows verifies that each network drive is ready for use")

whatdya think?
straightforward.

Bearin in mind i`m here 12 hours a night and between 8pm and 6am i dont see another soul so providin i do the swap tidy they wont know.

Probably. But if its like the network we have at Uni, as soon as a new MAC address (which is set in the hardware of the network card) appears on the network, it shows up bigtime in the security log. Pesky students thinks they can just attach their laptops to the network and download mp3's all day:mad: That's a priviledge reserved for the BOFH:D

so i could use the network card in the current pc and then the network security log wouldnt show up a new machine would it ?

If you rename you home workstation IDENTICALLLY to that of the PC you ar using at work, and replace and install the works NIC on your home machine, i think you will have it cracked.

Probably yes..however that type of software is usually a realtime prog ie need to catch someone in the act rather than 12 hours later IMHO

The rest of it seems fairly staightforward. Is the IP static or dynamic?

On Windows 98 i think it is

Start/settings/control panel/network...Rght Clk properties

TCP/IP properties.

See wheteher IP is obtained (dynamic), or specified (static)
If static, make a note of the IP

It may be worth making a note of the gateway and the IPs for DNS server search order.
