yip your bank will tell you if the cheque has been cashed. If not, cancel the old one (you'll need the number) and simply send another...

Just explain it to the bank. Bank have fraud departments set up purely to deal with things like that.

I'm not sure if they'll be able to tell you who it was paid to (even though it shouldn't have gone to anyone other than the guy you made the cheque out to).

Mention that you will be contacting the bank to have the fraud investigated to the guy who should have recieved the cheque, see if he suddenly remembers paying it in.

I had a similar problem with a fund transfer from my account that i didn't know anything about. Took 1300 quid from my account over 3 months. When i looked in to it my bank could only tell me what bank it was transfered to but not who's account it was. Turned out to be only an old direct debit i had set up for rent that hadn't been cancelled properly.

won't your statement tell you who the payee was? Or is it just the cheque number - whih the bank should be able to trace...
