View Full Version : Project - One day.......
About time I put this up here and what better time than with a hangover on a rainy sunday afternoon
It all started at the start of the year when I decided that I couldnt go much further with fwd, wanted boost and to drift - and to do it all relativly cheap and easily :wack:
After travelling over three quarters of England and getting messed about and extremly pissed off I started looking at E30's and then a last minute trip to Birmingham on a saturday night and I came home with my baby :D
After 2 days of owning it the turbo went big time and welcome me to the world of old turbo cars :wack:
After doing that it was time to give her a proper clean and polish (cheers Matt aka Develop on here) :notworthy for staying up until past 2am !

After an incident with a kerb resulting in a new lower arm and tie rod I attented my first drift day and loved it to bits.
After my second one I was starting to get the hang of it (read : marginally better and stil loving it) but realised the suspension needed changing cue the Apex coilover group buy :Plug:
Before :

After :
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/Litup.jpg
Another drift day at Santa Pod and the car felt loads better and looked it too but felt underpowered so needed to decide what I was going to do about it.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/D.jpg
Then came wheels (a bit overkill at 18" and not the best with a ET40 offset) but the grip was there now and was thankfull for that.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/2.jpg
Replaced my ****ed front brakes and then a trip to the Nurburgring with the lads for a quality experience. After that id realised that the things I need now are more power and better braking.
And now we are up to the present. Hvae decided that im going to go RB25 rather than throw money at my standard CA so been looking for a crash damaged R33 GTS-T but they aint easy to find :smash:
Have made my list of what I need to find and do and have read all the RB posts and projects and learnt alot but still have some questions so if anyone thats done the conversion would be happy to answer them it would be appreciated :Plug:
jesus, it realy was a boat before those coilovers
good luck with the project chap
now get off of here, and get back to work :wack:
MAtt
While saving for the RB ive started on the other things that are pissing me off on the car.
Started work on my spare bootlid this week -
How it started
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/DSC00611.jpg
A bit of cutting later and we have a perfectally ruined bootlid
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/DSC00612.jpg
The first plate - going to be spot welded along the edge but the rest will be carefully done normally. The metal is sooooooooooooooo thin though I fear a few heat issues :(
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/DSC00613.jpg
Matt (Develop) in action :D
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/DSC00614.jpg
This it the copper spray stuff that is being sprayed to the underside of the plates to stop it rusting from the inside out. Its weld through too so should stop the hassle of trying to protect the inside after the plates are attached
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/DSC00615.jpg
Frost do some putty that prevents heat spreading. I don't know how good it is though
http://www.frost.co.uk/item_Detail.asp?productID=8822&frostProductName=Cold%20Front%20(414ml)&catID=33&frostCat=Welding&frostSubCat=&subCatID=
SM's hatch has buckled pretty bad and I am going to have a go at it. Bet it takes a load of filler to improve it.
Cheers chap might end up giviong that a go depending on how the rest of the first plate goes
Started stripping it out tonight so I can clean it up / fix water leaks / lose some weight.
Sound deadening will be coming off and fancy collecting it all together to see what it weighs :ghey:
Also taking the mud flaps off as they look gash :D
i got 3 tesco bags full of sound deadening when i stripped mine all out, and it weighs a ton too. takes alot of elbow grease, a big chisle and hammer and some white spirit and its job done. be careful when you go round the area by the pedals, i found a spot of rust and ended up going stright through and now i can see the floor of the garage :D
steve
Will be carefull then :)
Thats another reason for the strippage - so I can find rust that I cant see from the underneath.
How does the white spirit affect it though ?
white spirit is ace at geting rid of the left over residue after you rip up the sound proofing.
Nice one - will be using that when its off then !
Might even treat it to a cheap respray inside to tidy it up a bit
thats what i did, went for direct to rust satin black, looks nice and shiny and black inside
Not much progress on the car this week as lots of things on the go.
All the boot trim and rear quarter trims are now out and managed to remove all the sound deadening from the boot and clean it up. Started on the drivers side rear seat area and thats as far as ive got.
Picked up my R33 GTS-T today so thats sat on the drive now ready to start breaking for whatever I dont need for the 13 (not gonna be much left).
Pics in the week hopefully but it aint nice
Good look with the project dude
Cheers chap bit dead in here at the moment :wack:
Off to pick up some standard body bits on sunday
I really need to learn to finish one thing at a time
i have the same problem i start one bit then move onto another before its finished lol:rolleyes:
Looking good so far
All the sound deadening from the boot and rear seats gone. Half of the area under the passenger carpet done too. Weighed 6.6Kg (yes I did bother  )
Uncovered rust on all the main seal from around the rear turret all the way to the ECU area so need to work out the plan of action from there.
Also dented the door at a drift day, got hold of some more spare panels and got Sinusitus (sp?)
More pics asap as projects without them are :ghey: :)
Pictures :sxoc:
This is how the stripping has come along so far
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/Stripped1.jpg
Also managed to get my donor Skyline up on stands sos I got the wheels off and then discovered why they came with the car :wack:
They have some sort of special sunk valve on them so you cant undo them without a tool which I dont have. Also they have all be rounded off and you cant get to them from the back either :ghey:
Tried drilling one out with no luck but even if I did get it out then id need a set of new special valves due to not beaing able to fit a normal valve in :annoyed:
Anyone interested in them before I weigh them in next week !?

Also discovered some rust after the strippage so removing the sealant too. What would people reccoment to sort all this out ?

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/Rust2.jpg
Less of an update and more of a plea for help I spose :furious:
This is what happens if you hit a cone lying on the floor sidewards at speed btw :(

Cheers chaps - good to see more people finally getting in here ;)
Not much done today due to a hangover and the lure of tv :ghey:
Sound deading tomorrow for sure and then awaiting friday to buy some things. Mainy stuff to sort this rust out and remove my ABS.
Little update
Been playing with some rust treater and primer recently and getting results slowly.

Finally something that looks better :D
Cheers chap :)
Ta for all the reccomendations / help - its turning out how I hoped now.
Still not sure if I should rattle can all the inside when done and keep it stripped or put the carpet back in after a good clean
Holy bumpage Batman
(this post is from Sat Oct 06, 2007 5:42 pm but forgot to put it on here)
Power time :D
The way I saw it I could either chuck alot of money at my standard engine or put something bigger in there so started looking about for things and then went on a 14 hour road trip to Essex on what must have been the hottest day of the year.
Adam did alot of this
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/3025716333a5211336334l.jpg
On the way up it was quite easy
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/3025716333a5211338509l.jpg
On the way back it was a bit heavier
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/3025716333a5211337811l.jpg
But my face tellsthe story
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/3025716333a5211337064l.jpg
And what did I get ?

Took a few bits off to sell today after I got it running right so progress at last
Current projects include the boot lid, making 306 fans fit an R32 radiator and moving the battery to the boot
Another needed update after so long !
The mission was to get as much of the R33 onto mine as possible and sell everything I didnt need - didnt go too bad :D
First of all swapped the hubs so that I could go to 5 stud hubs and therefore have a greater selection of drifty wheels but most importantly so I can run the R33 brakes.
Going from 1 pot fronts and rears to bigger 4 pot fronts and 2 pot rears is nice to say the least !.
Also kept it looking acceptable on S14 wheels rather than ghey facelift ones
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/35.jpg
With the engine out the shell and the shell waved goodbye it was time to start work.
The engine got a full inspection along with headgasket, turbo gaskets, crank check, cambelt set etc
A couple more drift days in Dec and Feb and it was engine swap time.
A big big big thanks to Matt for the help and workshop space and to everyone else who popped down to keep me from going insane :top:
Alot has changed and is still on going so ill just chuck a load of pics in with comments as I cant remember what order it was all done in (let alone how many hours have gone into it).
Out she comes - took alot of wriggling and that was with most of the bay cleared. Take note that if you plan breaking something and want to take the engine out at a later date dont park the front tight to lounge windows and a wall
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/Out.jpg
Also vans are handy - prob the most usefull thing ever if you own a Nissan !
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/In.jpg
The fun begins lol
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/Head.jpg
Classic JDM tight y0 pose for yall'
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/1-1.jpg
306 HDi leccy fans - viscouse fan will no longer fit in the engine bay so everyong gets moved around. So technically I can have a UK spec, JDM style car with EDM parts :?
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/2-1.jpg
Got angle ? This was all great fun and resulted in much heaving and sweating. Ta to Martin for spraying my filter while I was down maccys
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/5.jpg
She fits !
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/7-2.jpg
It dont all stop at engine and box ! Also went with changing the diff to match the ratios with the box but needed my backplate on it to hold it to the subframe. Also you cant use either of the standard props so here is prop bodging 101 - sponsored by Matt and my arc eye
Take 2 props and cut accordling to length.
Wedge together and tack weld.
Rotate it while welding to get a ****ing strong weld.
Pray
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/9.jpg
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/10.jpg
Did it do the job of getting the car moveable :hmmm:
Course it did 8)
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/11.jpg
So that was it all fitting in spacewise but still all needed to be wired in which is fun as there aint that many R33 import wiring diagrams available even when you know people in dealerships
Even with the above statement I decided I was gonna try and wire the R33 speedo cluster in as then I get an accurate speedo and tacho. Hours and hours of tracing wires, scribbling notes and getting ****ed off and its only got a few bits left to do.
While all this has been going on ive decided I need to start making it look a bit better even if it is gonna get hit into things.
Tailgate is a still in progress thing but tis getting there - should be ready next week so spoilerless love for moi.
Tis amazing what a £10 door, a £30 bumper and a mate with some spare time can do in a shed (big up to Ash)
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/Door.jpg
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/Picture030.jpg
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/Picture029.jpg
Wheels were also needed so brought a set of these VIP pimpers but one went missing in the post  . To cut a long story short I ended up with 3 alloys for free but would rather have had all 4 for the full price
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/Sterns.jpg
Due to the above ****up I needed something wide for the rear so picked a pair of these up and got a small bit of tyre stretch on the go (215 on a 9J)
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/PIAA.jpg
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/DSC06708.jpg
Still need to sort the front tyres out as getting very slight catching - need to go from my balooney 215/50/17 to something more like a 215/45 or a 215/40.
So anyways it looked like this
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/DSC06701.jpg
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/DSC06700.jpg
Currently looks just like that but with the other rims on the back
Next plan is to sort my mess of engine and dash wiring and get the front mount on. Then get it mapped and start attacking the rust which is already pretty bad
Great work chap
6cyl's are so the way forward in '08
Good job, keep it up

nice project mate  what happened to the wheels that were in your first pics when you got it?
Ended up selling those wheels to another member on here as they were not gonna fit on my 5 stud :(
Ed - what you gonna buy now then ?
New shell has been brought for part 2 of the project.
Ill start a new topic as ill continue this one with a few bits soon :)
