Hi All

Just reading a post about a fuel pump and Mr Carter said about import tax. What is import tax?

The reason I asked is that I have just ordered a front and rear strut brace from the state and just wondering if I am going to get lumbered with it?

Cheers
Dan.

As I understand it, anything bought from outside of the country as part of a normal buisness transaction must have Import tax paid on it (I think it's VAT).

Lots of the other guys do it regulary so I'm sure they'll post.

One way of getting around it is to get it sent over as a 'gift' as obviously you don't have to pay tax on PRESSIES!!!

The VAT that you don't pay on the goods, you'll have to pay when it goes through customs. So add 17.5% on top of the total cost and you'll most likely have to pay that too :( Plus handling fees if they're bastards.

in response to Alg,

I think the gift thing means that you don't have to pay VAT on anything up to £100 but otherwise if it's over £18 then you pay VAT :(

Call 0845 010 9000 (Customs & Excise National Helpline).

Ask for the address of your local VAT office and then ask to be sent a C&E 1179 (Use this to claim the DUTY back apprx' 3 - 15%). You'll need a copy of the invoice, DHL (or equivalent) recipt and a letter covering it, just make up any old excuse, send it back C/O E&IT Team...trust me they never get checked!
