Why is the time on my e-mails 2 hours behind my PC clock? I have checked the Clock settings and i'm on GMT, London etc. Is there something on outlook to adjust the clock on there as well ?

Outlook has it's own timezone selection. Sounds like you're is -2 hours,

Click Tools --> Options --> Calender Options --> Time Zones.

Dave (Welcome to my job ;) )

Dave S you seem to know your way around Outlook and wondered if you would be able to help me out?(Cheeky I know but here goes!)

Currnetly use Outlook from the Office 2000 suite on Windows 98SE. Whenever I have to import my previously saved contact details it seems to leave out the email details. The contacts have been saved from Outlook in Excel fromat. The email addresses definately save to the Excel file as I can open it up and see them in Excel. But for some reason they just don't want to import to Outlook. This has happened several times and I've also heard a friend saying the same thing happened to him.

Any ideas?

Not heard of this one before mate. When you import the files I assume you don't get any errors or anything?? Have you tried saving the excel sheet as a .CSV and importing this??

Dave

No errors reported.

Will try to save the file as in .csv format.

While we're talking IT. Well you're talking IT and I'm learning :) - do you know of a way to configure two bootable HDD (1 with 98SE on and the other with XP on) so that I have the option to boot from either. The reason being that I'm trying out XP to see how I get on but still want the option of keeping 98 on should things go pear shaped!

Cheers

Right, wasnt 2 hours out in fact its taking 2 hours for emails to be delivered  Think it might be my firewall as i only installed it the other day. bloody thing

XP far superior I know but still having a few compatibility problems with a a couple of bits of hardware such as printer and force feedback joystick.

Ah, my mate had the same issue and didnt want to leave ME but found the XP drivers for his Sidewinder (not one of these is it??)

The easiest option for dual booting XP and 98 is to install XP on the same drive as 98 and it will then create you another menu option that reads "Microsoft Windows" and allow you to boot that too :) It will say during the installation that theres another windows already installed, just say "Yes I know the consequences" (none if you don't install them in the same folder ;) )

Ooh, dont convert the drive to NTFS or 98 wont work  :)

Not really had time to have a proper look at it but the joystick is a Thrustmaster Force Feedback 2 (I think!) and although it's supposed to work with XP it does install ok but then the force feedback doesn't seem to work.

Regarding the dual booting I had in mind some way to simply have the option to boot from either hard disc as I didn't want to mess around with reinstalling OSs. Currently I'm physically swapping over the IDE master ribbion acording to which disc I want to boot from.

Having said that it's not too much of a problem as I'll soon probably bite the bullet and go for XP only.

Oh, in that case, piece of piss :)

Sorry Mark, I'll stop hijacking in a bit :D

You will need to edit the file boot.ini in the root of your XP boot drive.

Load up notepad.exe and open "C:\boot.ini" add this entry to the bottom ...

D:\="Windows 98"

Assuming D: is the 98 drive.

Then when you boot up a menu will appear listing Windows XP Professional (or Home) and Windows 98. Select Windows 98 and it should boot up :)

Gimme a shout if it doesnt

Mark, it's VERY unlikely to be the firewall. What is it? hardware / software?? have you checked with your ISP that they don't have mail delivery problems?

Dave

Alec

Nice one I'll give that a go.

Should I keep XP on IDE 1 and hook up 98 to IDE 2? Would I need to change the jumper settings on either of the drives or leave them both as Master?

Cheers.

Top Geeza Dave,

All blueyonder customers are currently experiencing problems with email delays, our support groups are aware and are currently investigating.

Alec, if you only have the HDDs attached to each IDE then leave them as MASTER. IF you have a CD-ROM, set this to slave and stick it down the cable with the HDD as MASTER :)

Mark:

Cool, thought that might be the case :)

Steve:

I dunno mate, I'll be bringing my PC "Magic hammer" with me ;)

while we're on the subject...
I've got a lot of emails in a DBX that I MUST not lose.
If I stick them on a disc, take them to another PC with Outlook, will I be able to load them into a new folder?
Its imperative that I have access to these - hence not just popping them on CD and forgetting...

Cheers

Remember to make boot.ini not read only. To do this, in XP select the tools menu fram any folder, then folder options, click the view tab, select the show hidden files and folders option, then deselect "hide protected operating system files".
Then, on your C: drive, right click boot.ini, sepect properties and deselect "read only".

If typing "D:\windows 98" in that file doesn't work, try this:-
In your boot.ini file you will most likely see this statement:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
Beneath that, if your second hard disk is on the same cable as your first one,(most likely if you have a CD Writer) type:-
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\windows="Winbloat sh*tey8"
If your second hard disk is on the second cable, set as a master, type this
multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows="Crappier winbloat"

If its a slave on the second interface, change the (0) after the rdisk bit to a (1).

Just in case you've got a really wierd setup, I'll run you through what that ****e means:
The multi is the number of the drive controller - allways 0 unless you've got an extra IDE interface (or scsi, in which case you sometimes have to type scsi)
the disk bit means the channel of that interface - on IDE its 0 or 1 with 0 being the primary, 1 being the secondary
the rdisk bit means the drive number on the channel. On IDE, the master is 0 and the slave is 1.
The partition number starts form 1, not 0 for some reason. Use disk administrator to find out the partition number.

You shouldnt need to add the drive info, but good to bear in mind :)
