Yes i know it's cheap, uneven and been done before, but i have a question. If it is being painted in a matte colour, do you need to put anything over the paint like a laquer for protection? Also, what would be the best way to prep the current paint work for spraying. The paintwork is shocking at the moment as it is sixteen years old and doesn't look like it's ever been looked after.

all i can say is the more time spent on preperation the better

it can be done, matt paint is probably better if you dont want a "shiney" look. Done bits on previous cars, but loads of prep and after spraying work needed if you want a good job

Ok, so for a complete spraying novice with no previous experience, what kind of prep/aftercare? I'm not after a perfect finish, just don't want it to look crap. :D

I did mine with a tin (several actually) and I am definatley no expert.
Depending on how much you have to do it can be quite expensive. Consider a compressor, may be cheaper in the long run and provides a more consistant covering.
As has been said, prep is everything. Get rid of all the rust and loose paint first, I used an orbital sander. DO NOT USE NITROMORS it is EVIL :annoyed: (imo)
Then its clean, sand, paint. repeat as is nescessary to get a good finish.
Make sure you clean well before painting (Workshop wipes are good) this includes completley removing dust, damp the floor with water to prevent any being kicked up. A heater is good as well if the outside temp is low.
I could'nt find a definitive answer a laquer, I found it best to leave the top coat for 24hrs, go over with rubbing compound and then spray.
As I said I am no expert, but with a little trial and error you can do a perfectley adequate job.

i laquered my matt black so it didnt chip so easy, it still looked matt as the laquer doesnt come out shiny when you spray out of a can lol!
