Hi all. I'm going to attempt to install this (moody copy) on a friends computer tonight on a new machine, now will I need a set of dos boot disks, will I need a CD rom driver on floppy to get the machine to see the XP disc, like you used to have to do with 98 and older versions, anything else that I might need to know (I have serial No to use on the disc), such as pit falls
60gig hard drive, should I partition it?
Cheers in advance

If you can boot from the CD-ROM, useing BIOS then you shouldnt need any other disks, thats how I done mine.

It should do that ok if its newish.
Is it apukka copy? If not it won't work for long. WindowsXP has to be registered with Microsoft within 30 days or it just shuts down and wont load. I downloaded a cracked copy which resets the timer everytime you restart the PC, but it too went belly up. So in the end I went back to Windows 2000, and I swear by Win2K, XP has some good features but is a pain as you pretty much have to buy it, or rob a copy !
Ignore the above comment, just make sure you've got corporate edition and it'll be just fine, apparently!

My copy says its XP proffesional, so is that the corporate one? I've put off downloading it now till the weekend anyway.
I'm thinking of downloading some programes to put on CD to take with me, any suggestions? :)
i.e
winzip
winamp
Ahead nero
exPressIt
Paintshop pro
Zone alarm
Reget
Messenger
If you have corporate edition you can update to SP1 REALLY easily with a freely available utility, that make NO changes to any XP files; apparently!
I would also say the term "if you try to install it, it goes belly up" is scare mongering, what it actually does is refuses to install, then says that your license key is invalid in a nice polite notice. AND THATS IT, its still fully functional and everything; apparently.
There are various flavours of WIN XP Pro, the differences are in the licensing modules and thats it; corporate never needs activating like the retail box!
You'll need to download the XP Pro key changer that I may have stumbled across at some point *cough* PM *cough*

I am just try to help out, not scare mongering. I have installed Windows XP, both legit and non legit, i.e. cracked and otherwise, copies. If you have a legit copy go for it, if not personnaly I wouldn't bother, Windows 2K is an excellent operating system and as I am too tight to buy a legit copy of XP then Win2K it is. BTW running the service pack can, and did to me, render you OS inoperative, you have been warned by one who has actually tried it, and this does include Corporate Edition. Of course you can just avoid installing the service pack....
As for partitioning your hard drive, yes I would, I have a 40Gb drive with 4 x 10Gb partitions. Boot, Files, Videos and backup. I have been infected with viruses, get a firewall if you have broadband, and have had to re-install my O.S. on a few occasions, hence trials with XP. Because I keep files and stuff on other partitions the re-installation process is no problem, best bet is to do a new install and do a drive image of your OS to a backup partition.
If you have a friend who is in IT , i.e. a Microsoft Certified Software Engineer, ask them to for advice too.
Does your friend have Broadband? if so then the following filesharing software is worth trying,
Edonkey2000, or Emule, uses the same network, good for films and software
KaaZaa, good for music and porn
WinMx, good for most stuff
Well, I was running the "dodgy" copy of XP since the late betas and never had any problems updating to SP1 when it came out. All you need is a key changer. I now have a legit copy anyhow so no problems for me, but what you're saying isn't right.

Elaborate please?
I guess you are refereing to the render inoperative statement? Well it happened to me!

I'd rather screw Microsoft for everything they've got, bunch of money hungry ******s! I have never bought software for myself, self incrimination blah blah, and the only thing I have had a problem with is WindowsXP.
By all means martblusx give it a try, and if you get it to work great, all the better if you can have a working copy for nowt I say, but I've been there done that etc. It may be the 3 copies of XP I had were the problem or I was the problem but I don't think its worth the hastle, Win2K is more stable in my experience, and is less hungry on resourses, i.e. memory, Kernell.
Thats fair enough mate :)
Each to their own etc. I used win2k for a little while whilst XP was in beta and it's very nice, XP just has the pretty bits on top. It does seem to be a little more finnicky than 2k if you do something wrong though ;)
Dave
By the way, all service packs have and indeed do screw any MS product depending on the age of the install and the hardware you run it on, and I have had most things I have SP'd at some point go belly up including a god damn exchange server!!!!.
Oh, and ask an MSCE? most of them arent worth the paper there writen on! As they have just read a book and passed an exam. and dont actually no anything (no offence to tose like my self who contradict that statement).
Ms serveice packs do indeed cause you major headaches! I have had many problems with them. On XP they no longer include JAva and when you go to get it from microsoft they tell you to D/L the service pack and low and behold, If you cant live without java then go to the Sun cobalt website and D/L the latest java plugin for free. Currently i believe its J2RE.
Rob
Isn't SP1 for XP the ONLY way to get Microsoft Java RunTime now?
Dave
im using the sun cobolt plugin and it works fine. im not bothering with SP1 untill there is a safe way to use it thats guaranteed. Im fed up with reinstalling XP

If you have a Corporate licensed XP Disk, you CAN install the Service Pack 1 - I've just done it. And I installed from a Backup ;) of our select agreement XP CD.
Didn't have to run any software key changers etc, just ran Windowsupdate and installed.
And it didn't stop my Laptop from running.
There is a copy going around that doesn't work properly - apparently it is a pre final release version.
You don't have to activate it either.
Not condoning Piracy tho ;)
so how do you tell if you have the corp version as mine came on a blank disk, not that im using it, you understand.
Rob
The copy "that you wouldnt consider using cos it's illegal" is most likely the corp version. That was the most leaked one. The only way to tell is install it, if it asks you to activate it's the normal one :)
Dave
That is correct....
Microsoft stopped some leaked CD keys (embedded into corporate edition) being used with the release of SP1 but there is a workaround available, and yes the corporate edition is the final release edition too, and not some pre-release beta as mentioned above.

I mentioned that there was a pre release version doing the rounds, you can check the build number to see if this is the case.
Current Build number is 2600
On no account did I imply that the current Corporate Licensed Edition was a pre release.
Yup and some Licensed editions are doing the rounds and thats what microsoft tried to stop, until someone released all the corporate keys in one go
