So - a mate of mine currently has a 470BHP R33 GTR, which will shortly be up for sale. He's going to get something he can track and pocket the rest of the cash...

So...

I'm after suggestions on a 5K ish, fun trackday toy. He'd prefer RWD.. He's on about getting an RX7 (FD?), I'm trying to talk him out of it - if he wrecks it I'll

So - shortlist I've come up with so far...

BMW e30. Great fun on track, plenty of them about, cheap to run, but maybe a little limited on power (unless you drop an e36 M3 motor in)

He's had an e36 BMW M3 before and wasn't keen on it, so they are out...

200sx. He's not keen on them, although they are very capable, he doesn't want one :(

MX5. 5K would get you a nippy FI one with reasonable change to trackify it. But I've got one of them already already, so he doesn't want one...

Older Supra (pop up headlight one). Not too sure on these tbh...

Any other suggestions? :) He's not got a garage, so caterham etc is out of the question...

What about an MR2? There's a whole bunch of fun in a little car there and I know there's people on here running in the MR2 championship league thingy.

Or even a CRX? I'd imagine 5k would buy a well modified one set up for track use?

I've suggested an MR2, don't think he's keen on the rear engine as it makes working on them a PITA...

CRX is FWD. I've already tried to convince him to get a 205GTI or a mk1 golf, but think he's set his mind on RWD...

Does he want one immediately?

There's a huge plethora (I like that word :D) of cars available from the land of the rising sun that would be available for 5kish. Chasers/R32's etc. Most of the importers on driftworks have a tasty collection of motors.

What track work does he want to do? Grip/drift etc.

He'll start looking once the 'liner sells - its in for a service and a new clutch at the moment, once it's back it will be up for sale fairly soon.

It'll be for grip rather than drift.

me and my mate are looking into getting a trackday car :D

were pricing up parts at the minute for a v.cheap eg civic and were goin to be putting a K20a lump in there :D

hasport do all the parts needed for the conversion. i want to do it for a winter project and we should be able to do it for 2.5k each. it will be one fast, reliable track car

sorry for the hijack :)

Came up with another suggestion today...

BMW 3 Series Compact. 100kg+ lighter than an e36, stripped out it would be about 1100kgs, with the 140BHP 1.8IS motor in it.

You can pick them up for a grand from autotrader... The 6 cyl engines can be dropped in as well (they did a 6 pot 325 on the continent), which means the M3 engine could be dropped in :)

2 door cossie  sorry to bring them into the fold but have to be considered, cheap parts easy to push bigger power and safe for track.

Cheers for the suggestions :) He's not a mechanical type person, so any engine swap costs would have to be factored in... He's actually leaning towards an e30 at the moment :)

MkIII Supra 2.5 Twin Turbo R (import) - 1JZ :D

That's possibly the one. Some guy had one at a trackday a while back - it was pretty rapid although a bit bodgetastic... Dunno how they are to drive though, or if they are lardy like their younger brother...

I did actually suggest some old yank tank, but we thought they would be a bit boat like ;)

If he wants a proper trackday special, why not a Caterham or something?

EDIT: Just read the first post properly, ignore me :smash:

E30 M3s are dropping to around that price for tatty examples, I've seen mechanically sound but scruffy ones for £4-5k..

Rx7?really amazing car,if you want it for track day purposes means a lot of cash!Civic will make a good, dont want to say cheap cuz nothing is cheap doing motorsport but not cost that much, track car...but really 5k man you want an sx its obvious!ask him to re-consider as it is an awsome track car, alternativly think about celica gen 6,gt or gt4 really fast...gtr r32 its hard to get for 5k but worth a try...good luck
