View Full Version : Help: Advice Needed
I wont have enough time to save up for a s13 due to going abroad with work at the end of the year.. (for 2-3 years)
My main aim was to get a decent S13, but a few things fell through (like a loan:( ) and will not be able to save for a "properly looked after" S13.
So I have a few choices...
1) save for 3-4 months and buy a dirt cheap S13 that wil last for 6-8 months.
2) Buy a quick car for around £400-500. - but what one????? - pref RWD :)
3) Have no car:eek: (which I dont really want to do)
I want to do this because when the end of the year comes, I will be able to take a £10,000 loan from my work for a purchase of a car, and I will probably get a S14a with it, and take it abroad with me.
So what do people reckon........
Cheers,
Tim
Cheap + RWD + quick = Sierra xr4i.
Not too cheap on fuel though ;)

OK
first year of production 1983 in 2.0-litre turbo form, non intercooled. 1984 saw the first IC and a power jump from 155bhp to 177bhp. Torque is in the region of 214lbft
Fastest 2.0-litre on teh road 1982-1987 (Porsche beaters). 1987 saw the first wide bodied 2.0-litres, followed in 1988 (think) by the 2.6-litres. Power not vastly increased by the 2.6 due to that cat.
All model are "EX". All are turboed. All have rear LSD and ABS. PAS standard.
What is your def. of cheap? As with all enthusiasts cars, Parkers mean jack. I bought my red 1986 (below) for 995 - worth appx 1500-1600. The latest was 550 and worth 1700-1800. How did I get them so cheap? Just in right place at right time. If you look around you'll see the "real" prices I have suggested are teh most common ones....
Servicing is cheaper than Nissan I think, but still more than Ford/Vx etc.
I still think that they are probably the best setup cars I've driven...
www.starion-turbo.co.uk is good tho it is having a few minor disputes (oh and get a pop-up stopper before you venture in)
otherwise hit Mitsi Starion into Yahoo and see what comes out!
Oh, the starion-turbo pages have original roadtests on there too...
http://www.starion.fsnet.co.uk/roadtests.html
the first is for the 2.0 WB - and the engine isn't on-off... tsk these journos have no idea...
the third (I think) is for the 2.0 NB
Cheers for that mate,
I am having trouble finding stats on the cars other than what you have already said b4.
Out of all the different models made, what one would you choose? I do like the Wide Arch one tho.. :)
Does the 2.6 need a Cat for a MOT?
Sorry to be a pain, but I might just follow this up;)
I think that the road tests have stats on them somewhere...
I guess I'll have to go and find them now.....
ohhhh you....
(actually you've got me curious coz I've forgotten some of them myself)
Yeah, the 2.6 does need a cat for the ticket, as far as I know. However, I totally accept that I may be mistaken or you could get away with a gutted one...
As for models... hmmm...
I love my 2.0 1986 Narrow body. It drives superbly, is right on the money and is teh only car I can drive for 5.5hours straight without any problems at all.
I've only just got the 2.6 Wide Body, but on about 40miles covered can say that it is probably a JEckel and Hyde beast. The tub on mine only spools to 7 (blocked fuel filter) but it is totally docile. I can only imagine how frantic, mad and totally crazy it would be to get it roaring to 14psi as the factory intended...
The NBs are a little more elegant, I think. (elegant is a loose term) where as the WBs look more like balls dragging on the groundbefore being washed in TCP rally cars....
How much are you looking @ spending?
If you want to have a closer look and happen to be in W Sussex at any point, let me know... I can't show you the WB in action (I'mnot insured on it) but you could have a look-see none the less...

Which model has the best modding potential then? The 2.6 I assume?

Either
the 2.6's can make bigger HP once the cats are removed, through sheer size. But the engines are a bit heavier...
What sort of power would you expect for spending say a grand or 2 on various mods? Would these mods be similar to S13 (intercooler, zorst, air filter, possibly bigger turbo etc)?
Sorry if this is a bit off topic Tim, I've just always wondered what potenital these beasties have :)
No worries mate,
thanks for asking, I am curious aswell:)

Hmmm
I've heard of 500bhp coming from a decatted 2.6 - plus. I think there's a 600bhp somewhere out there, probably more... There aren't as many of us as there are of you - and info is more scarce.
If you want to spend 2 grand (give 1 grand to me first...)... ;)
New straight thru zorst with swept downpipe (full stainless steel custom made/fitted you are looking £350 for the main section and then the downpipe at variable prices! appx £100 has been quoted b4 tho...)
Drop a T3 in, or even better a T25
K&N with open air box (take air can, cut holes)
Engine remap and fuel chip
Boost controll valve.
Forged crank and pistons
Dump valve
Potentially a DOHC head from something else (but I've gotto check this)
slightly larger IC (you can't get much bigger as the fit is already snug)
Cosworth clutch and lightened flywheel.
That will prolly bring you to about the £2k mark and if you have a 2.6 remove the cat and you'll see the power fly up...
Of course, that's if you buy everything new... if you go for 2nd hand or NOS gear then you can fit more for your £2k...
I'm prolly not the best person to ask about high power mods as I haven't carried any out yet, whereas some of the other Starion guys have. I'll see if I can find anything else out...
reluctant sale of my pride and joy because I will shortly be losing the heated garage where the car has lived for the last four years.
91k miles from new, most old MOT's detailing mileage etc.
Owned last seven years with full windows out respray 2 years ago - only 2500 miles driven since then in dry summer conditions!
New MOT, mint interior in black, recent service carried out and record of all work undertaken during the last seven years.
Regularly seen at the Southern meets.
With summer coming up this is a real opportunity to own a head turning Starion in a unique colour (spare paint comes with car for any touch up in the future)
£995 o.n.o.
****
This is being sold by my mate James, I can vouch for the outstanding condition of this car... Any interest and I'll let him how.
1985 (I think) NB
