View Full Version : My S13 Project.

I thought id make use of this section :) and put my on going money pit i mean project of an S13 up.

A bit of background, firstly ive had the car for about three years, when I bought it the big ends had already gone :annoyed: so long story short I swapped it for an engine I bought of here from Big Dave who had bought it from Kenny S13.

I swapped it all over and it was fine for a while although the body work needed doing :whip: .

So when I got the money together I went for a Bodykit from DME and some Chargespeed wings from SRB and a full respray in MG trophy blue.

I decided to do most the work myself with some friends, my next door neighbours body shop and a friend of my Dads.

It sounded like a good idea at the time save some money learn some new skills etc, but in hindsight I wouldunt do it again  the amount of effort and time it took just to fit and prep the kit has made sure that if I do another car ill happily pay a reputable body shop 2000 pounds to do it for me.

After the car was sprayed (at 2 in the morning) everything was good for a while until one fateful Friday at my local Tesco's, id finished work and felt like crap and thought id cheer myself up with a new game for my 360, it didnt work like that though I caught a kerb whilst parking and I ended up ripping half of my front bumper off, along with one of my wings    :annoyed: .

So the car was back off the road I was gutted and had to take the bumper and wing off to attempt a repair, I managed to fibreglass the front bumper and wing back together to not a bad standard:Plug: considering it was the first time id had a proper go at fibreglassing something substatial.

The bumper and the wing then went off to my neighbours bodyshop to be prepped (again) for spraying. In the mean time Mr Pointblank had started a for sale thread and from there my bank manger became my new best friend:D

I bought Tim's engine, intercooler, injectors, and exhaust aswell as his GT2540R Turbo.
I then needed all the supporting mods like clutch, new gasgets etc.

As things stand today the only parts of the jigsaw im missing are:

Z32 AFM
Turbo inlet to AFM piping
mapping session

everything else is here or on its way, and yet again its going to be a tight call for JAE sorry about the long post guys.

Save clutering up the thread pics are here:

Things for me to do this weekend are:

Fit clutch and Flywheel
Reassemble the plenumn with all ancillaries.
Fit and check all engine ancillaries.

My gearbox bits are coming next week so thats the last piece of the jigsaw.

Well started putting the plenum back together yesterday and am stuck on a few bits:annoyed:
http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k251/clarity1056/plenum_1.jpg
On this pics the arrow points to a lug for something if I remeber correctly this is for a bracket that goes to where the runners meet the head is that right?
http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k251/clarity1056/plenum_3.jpg
On this pic I cant figure out what pipes go on the two bits of pipe pointing down??
http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k251/clarity1056/plenum_2.jpg
http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k251/clarity1056/plenum_1.jpg

Also is the bracket that comes off the fuel rail pipe work supposed to bolt to hole number 2 in one of the above pics?

Can anyone shed any light on the above or have pictures of a fully assembled plenumn?

Cheers

No, the two going down are definately water feed. One goes to other part of plenum iirc, and other side goes to turbo.

Here's a pic from another thread (posted by Deek):

Quick update: Got the plenumn and injectors all bolted up, ive also managed to strip one of the plenumn bolt hole threads :annoyed: so im going to drill and tap that today.

Still having a nightmare with all the ancillaries and whats missing, ive attached some pics below if you guys spot anything let me know :) . Also what do you guys do about fitting a flywheel and clutch whilst the engines out the car, i.e how do I brace the engine to do the flywheel bolts up.

Right another update, picked up an S14 gearbox from Girlracer:thumbs: on Friday night Saturday morning mate turned up took all the stuff away and came back 2 hours later  with one rebuilt Os Giken 3 gear kit setup including new bearings etc.

Changed the timing belt and refitted the bottom pulley, ive had the day off today to finish the engine off, still stuck on some of the pipe work:annoyed: and still haveunt got around to fixing the stripped thread:whip: .

Hopefully all will be sorted today so I can drop it back in the bay next weekend, fingers crossed:)

Just fitting my new clutch release bearing, just posting some pics up of the process if someone can comfirm for me that the bearing is the right way round and the spring clip is located correctly, also how do you get the bearing on whilst its in the bell housing?

Old bearing, slightly larger and of a different design to the new one.

Right then thought id take advantage of the nice whether and run in to some more problems:whip: just for a change:wack:

First things first theres a small bore pipe that runs from the the back of the plenumn all the way round to the PCV valve I think it is:confused: does anyone know where it should plumb into plenum end? see pics below.

On attempting to rewire the starter I discovered a load of wires that werent actually attached to anything, theyve been cut:rolleyes: .

And some plugs that dont seem to have a home. Can someone please tell me if the starter wiring is correct and secondly and where the green plug goes? see pics below:

Think that green plug is meant to be connected to an ABS sensor and that that metal pip has a breater pipe that runs the length of the bulkhead to underneath the standard airbox.

Started putting the prop back on and got attacked by a spider so ive sent the cat in to clear him out .

I also sorted the absolute pain in the ass that was the intake pipework for the turbo, I brought a length of the flexi pipe that Tone used, but due to the many twists and bends till it gets to the hardpipes its not ideal and is actually quite fragile. I also had to cut it down to almost a third of its length so it would fit, aswell as spending 30 quid on Mikalor clamps and having to bodge the standard AFM on to an 80mm silicon reducer.

Things left to do:
Remake the radiator brackets as you can see from the pictures they are now to long.
Finish my heat shield
Make a bracket for the damper located on the suspension strut as the one that came with it is far from adequate.
Im waiting for a bottom rad hose to turn up, as I cant find the origiginal:annoyed: .
Im also afetr a complete set of cam cover bolts and an alternator bracket, also as of today I need a gearbox exhaust mounting bracket as I cant find either of the ones I had, again :annoyed:
Ive still got to finish sorting the intercooler piping.
Refit the exhaust when I get the bracket mentioned above.
And a load of other things like replace the dash mount gauges etc.

my flexi pipe will be going over the top of the hotpipe rather than like yours, underneath.

i also felt flush the day i bought my flexi pipe from merlin and got the silver silicone coated pipe, outside / in. it looks a lot more substantial than the red one, which appears to be just one layer. might be worth it if you do experience problems with that one :)

Thats the plan mate if it fails ill go for the one you bought and run it over the top, unfortunately when I first fitted it it split near the middle so I had to cut it in half:cry:

You live and learn though its not always worth going for the cheaper option and in this case will possibly cost me 30 quid more than it needed to.

Well tonight we got it running again, turns out id blown the fuel pump fuse:rolleyes: changed that and it started after a few cranks, running really lumpy.

Turned it off and had a look round to see if I could spot anything obvious and noticed one of the rear cam seals was missing:annoyed: luckily my Dad remembered where hed chucked all the crap from under the car and we managed to dig it out. I smeared it with some Hylamar and five minutes later we were back running. It was still quite lumpy though so I adjusted the CAS till it idled a bit better and adjuster the screw adjuster next to the AAC, FCID.

Weve now got it idleing ok but it doesunt start to well, so im waiting on a timeing light and some bolts for the coilpacks and then I think im about as far as I can get and then its over to the professionals.

Yeah pretty good bit scary at the top end of third  Need to get it on a track really to get the most out of it.

Still a few things to sort 1st on the list is the exhaust fumes in the cabin i stink of it after only a 20 minute drive. Should get the new wheels next week then ill post some new pics up :)

Excellent stuff :)

What is the estimated power? Any ideas why you are getting fumes in the cabin?

Sorted the fumes out, one of the exhaust gasgets had gone, and fitted a front strut brace and washer fluid bag.

Also found a few loose connetions and a loose Mikalor clamp at the filter end
