Project Pringles - Once you rot, you just cant stop :D
well, i thought it was funny :annoyed:
This will be the story of my S13 build up.
A few months ago i was given this car:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/punto_nutter/200sx/Image101.jpg
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/punto_nutter/200sx/Image103.jpg
in payment for turning this:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/punto_nutter/200sx/before.jpg
into this:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/punto_nutter/200sx/ian2.jpg
The 200 was mainly standard, but had a couple of changes.
It has an S14 Diff, S14 front callipers, and S14 front leather, Tein Lowering Springs
It also had a T28 fitted, but is being removed, as its fubar'd
and it had some other bits which wern't fitted such as
stainless manifold, turbo elbow, decat
oh yeah, it seems to be missing something, but cant figure out what it is,
if anyone can work it out for me, can they let me know:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/punto_nutter/200sx/DSC_1550.jpg
Well, i finally got round to investigating further on thursday,
so i dug the 200 out from her space in the workshop for a closer look underneath:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/punto_nutter/200sx/DSC_1548.jpg
These pics show some of the findings:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/punto_nutter/200sx/DSC_1536.jpg
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/punto_nutter/200sx/DSC_1537.jpg
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/punto_nutter/200sx/DSC_1560.jpg
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/punto_nutter/200sx/DSC_1538.jpg
The inner arch, isn't actually attatched to anything at the moment, its very rotten.
Back of rear wheel arch:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/punto_nutter/200sx/DSC_1562.jpg
Sill:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/punto_nutter/200sx/DSC_1542.jpg
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/punto_nutter/200sx/DSC_1543.jpg
The whole inner and out sill needs replacing :(
Chassis Leg:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/punto_nutter/200sx/DSC_1552.jpg
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/punto_nutter/200sx/DSC_1544.jpg
At certain points on the chassis leg, you can see all the way through it,
and some interesting patch repairs have already been made.
i havn't had a chance to get to the O/S yet, but i imagine it shall be the same.
going back down to the workshop tonight to make some more holes :wack:
My original plans were to get the car on the road with a touch of welding magic to get it through an MOT, but there is a little more than i expected,
sooooo......
not to be struck down,
i'm going in balls deep,
and this is going to be the finish i am aiming for:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/punto_nutter/DSC_0239.jpg
all i seem to work on is minis lol
going to drop all the suspension/subframes out, and completely redo the underside of the car before i get her back on the road.
it also gives me the perfect oppertunity to fit a suspension alignment kit, and to sort out all the bushes.
....and hopefully she'll be a rolling shell again in a few weeks. :whip:
The big ends had gone on the original engine, and had also melted a piston,
so i'm off to pick up an engine tomorrow, that has done 20k since a rebuild.
that will get me back on the road, then i can have a play with the 4 spare engines i have laying around :wack:
i also picked up a standard T25 that has done less than 5k today, so i now have everything need to get the engine back in and working.
i shall keep updating regularly, and add pics as i go.
thanks for reading
Matt.
Looks like you've got your work cut out for you... well done for committing yourself to repairing that shell though, most people would have angle ground it to bits and chucked it away

is yours on the road?

no, she wont be staying orange.
the paint is also a cause for major headache.
this is it:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/punto_nutter/200sx/DSC_1555.jpg
its actually tractor and cement mixer orange enamel
which means, its a bugger to paint over:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/punto_nutter/200sx/DSC_1554.jpg
was testing out a aerosol colour, and that is what happens.
it just peels away, and reacts really badly.
i've done some etch priming on a repair i did on the door, and some of the fadeout went onto the old paint, and took it all off.
i dont think it was properly prepped before it was done either, as it comes off with masking tape, which leaves me know choice but to sand the whole car down as far a possible, to ensure a good key, and to illiminate any paintind problems.
I'm looking forward to following your progress with this:nod::thumbs:
is it being kitted or are you staying with the standard bodywork?
good luck;)

This car looks like it is going to be a mission but i wish you all thel uck in the world with it.
Could you not just sand blast the whole bodywork to get the paint off?
Oh and that Mini rocks, top job:thumbs:

Aww I love that mini! I'd love another, but don't have space for a 5th car!
Think you got a bum deal getting the S13 for such a mint mini!
Going to be following this thread though, make sure you post shed loads of pics on any metal work you replace!
:sxoc:
Could you not just sand blast the whole bodywork to get the paint off?
i did contemplate getting the whole shell blasted, but they cant blast the flats of the panels anyway, as the power from the blasting distorts them,
so i would have to sand those parts anyway.
i am going to spot blast certain areas to remove all rust,
and i have a blast cabinet to do all the removable parts.
Nope mine is in bits atm slowly getting done up due to lack of funds
if you ever need a hand, just give me a shout, always willing to help out.

will do
lots will be added throughout the build.
will be doing some more work this week, but probably wont start replacing metal till next week, as i need to order a new inner cable for my welder.

Fairplay for tackling the s13 body.... Would it not work out cheaper in the long run sourcing a decent s13 rolling shell?
Oh and loving the mini retro style:D

Its gonna have more patches than frankenstein's monster :D
I will be keeping my eyes on this thread  (especially since my car is not far off that :wack: )
Got a chance to do a little more last night:
The state of the Tailgate:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/punto_nutter/DSC_1575.jpg
It had been so badly repaired in the past:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/punto_nutter/DSC_1577.jpg
that it left me no choice, but cut it all out leaving an inch around the outside to keep the shape, so i can fabricate a new panel.
Will be doing some more tonight, going to move it into the centre of the workshop, so i can get to the drivers side aswell.

Bloomin eck this is going to be a hardcore job.
I take it that you are a good fabricator then?
Small Update:
got round to doing some more on the S13,
Front end as it is now:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/punto_nutter/DSC_1641.jpg
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/punto_nutter/DSC_1640.jpg
Its a bit lighter at the front, so i may need to reposition the stands :wack: :
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/punto_nutter/DSC_1648.jpg
Anyways, more rust :annoyed: :
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/punto_nutter/DSC_1642.jpg
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/punto_nutter/DSC_1643.jpg
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/punto_nutter/DSC_1646.jpg
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/punto_nutter/DSC_1644.jpg
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/punto_nutter/DSC_1647.jpg
Also going to remove this:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/punto_nutter/DSC_1645.jpg
and move the battery to the boot, tidying up the look of the bay, and leaves provision for me to fit a front mount.
Inbetween bits, i have started to polish the cam covers, as they were bare on the engine i bought last week :D :
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/punto_nutter/DSC_1652.jpg
Next job is to drop the rear subframe and tank out, then i'm going to make a transporting frame for the shell, and i've decided to send it off to be blasted
More updates soon
MAtt.
