I want to invest money (small amounts) on a regular basis. You know the sort of thing. Money for birthdays, etc....
Anyone recommend what to invest in. I would like to start an investment and give it to her in 17 yrs time when she turns 18.

dunno if post office still does those investment accounts, but that's what my mum did for me. also could just stick it in a high interest earner in a bank, then annually take it out and put it in a Bond (ask at your bank).
would advise against dotcom and telco shares at this moment :D

Buy her a private number plate :D it the fastest growing investment at the minute 35% per year
Si :)
She won't have access to it at 18, but investing into a stakeholder pension this early in her life will make a huge difference for her. I've seen some very impressive projections, a grand now plus a hundred quid a month will accumulate a very handy fund, even when inflation is taken into account. I know it sounds dull, thinking about her retirement now, but imagine how much difference it will make not having to worry about making pension contributions when she eventualy goes to work :)
If you defo want her to have access to the money at 18 I'd need to know more about you situation :)
If you want any more specific advice (I work for a major IFA) feel free to send me a PM :)
