Another project thread finds its way onto the board s :)

Now the John Deere is up and running, it was time to get my car into the garage (Cheers to Dunkz for letting me use it to do the car) as she's due a rebuild (131k on the clock) and im also getting a fair bit of blue smoke!. She was washed and rolled inside where she sat waiting for us to start work, work started on her Friday night when we unbolted very little as we were both too tired after working all day. So night one was a bit of a waste.

Got up this morning around 9am and was raring to go so i headed to tesco grabbed a few supplies and then onto the garage.

Im not going to narrate everything as i really cant be arsed :wack: pictures say more than words. Ill get a list of what were doing etc later :)

So heres what we got done today from around 10am until i left at 11pm :)

Found there was a Drift Tractor parked behind me in the garage!!!

Best keep this updated :)

So i took the Block and head into work still connected with one bloody stud that decided it wanted to round off  So we popped it onto the Drill and got stuck in :)

We drilled the head off the stud using a 12.5mm drill.

http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/vv198/PuggerS13/rebuild/strip%20down/IMG_0152.jpg

What it looked like once drilled

http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/vv198/PuggerS13/rebuild/strip%20down/IMG_0154.jpg

Lifted the head off leaving the stud

http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/vv198/PuggerS13/rebuild/strip%20down/IMG_0155.jpg

Popped a piston out to have a look at one of the bores..

http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/vv198/PuggerS13/rebuild/strip%20down/IMG_0158.jpg

Tapped the stud with a hammer and removed it easily with a set of Mole grips

http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/vv198/PuggerS13/rebuild/strip%20down/IMG_0161.jpg

Also noticed a line going between 2 of the bores... Luckily it turned out to be a scratch :hurl:

The Block has been degreased, powerwashed and is in the stages of being masked for painting.

Now to decide what colour to do it lol!

Right ive not updated this in a week or so..

Sadly ive not always had a camera on me at work to get pictures :(

Anyways... I decided that i was going to the hassle of ripping it to bits i may aswell make it look fresher when is back together. So we collected the multiple brackets that hold everything together and put them in a box and took them to my work, once at work the threaded parts were blanked and the lot was sand blasted to bare metal.

The block was taken back to the garage where we painted it a bright silver (i know how original!! :wack: )

http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/vv198/PuggerS13/rebuild/strip%20down/P6040264.jpg

i think it looks better :)

Heres a box of Blasted parts..

http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/vv198/PuggerS13/rebuild/strip%20down/P6010211_800x600.jpg

After about 7 days looking at colours to spray my cam covers and other brackets i finally decided.. so we needed to prime everything..

http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/vv198/PuggerS13/rebuild/strip%20down/P6020223_800x600.jpg

(also Blasted my cam covers with a softer blast ;) easier than sanding it LOL)

Its the primer witch project

The head was stripped down a few weekends ago apart from removing the stem seals, so i took the head to work and removed the with a mixture of Long nose pliers/ a Seal Pick and a few swear words :)

the head was then degreased and power washer to remove all the crud around the valve area (a mixture of carbon and burnt on oil) the degreaser made easy work of that and made the head fairly clean.

The valves were in some state... Dunkz and Fud........... AYE will vouch that they were almost binners lol... the Crap was molded round them and no amount of Stanley knife and screwdrivering was making it move. We tried petol, diesel, oil, degreaser they all failed...

I called nissan to price new valves :wack: as i thought this would be as easy and as cheap LOL... Nope £33.80 Per Valve

Ended up cleaning them up on a pedestal grinder with wire wheel :)

At about 11pm on saturday night we decided to rebuild the head :wack:

heres some pictures

We would do but were always borrowing them ourselves. That ones from Danny's work and if thats not available then various local friends tend to sort us out.

I think i've still got paint in my hair from walking into dangling bracketry!

Right not a great amount has happened since i last updated so this one will be short...

I am how ever now skint due to the holiday  Thank Fook for Plastic ;)

Over the past 2 nights ive stripped the inlet plenum down to clean it all up, took the Butterfly valve off and had a look in, everything seemed ok until i took the Rear cover off :wack:

Summit to think about if you cars using oil in my opinion, the oil inside was about 1 -2mm thick all round the back end of the plenum. took a fair while to get cleanish. :indiff:

http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/vv198/PuggerS13/rebuild/strip%20down/P6260269.jpg

Tonight we also stripped down the pistons, cleaned them up, fitted the new rings to the pistons and Honed the Bores of the block :)

Done some more work today... in fact i was still at work at 6:15pm doing stuff and i finish at 4:30

I took the plenum and sump in today to get a clean up, firstly the plenum took a dip into the "tumbler" (basically a big vibrating bath filled with polishing stones) of a few hours to try get the worst of the crap from the inside out. it seemed to do the job :)

I then used a scotch bright wheel thinking that would finish it off but it didn't look as good as i thought it would :( so i gave it a coating instead :)

Below you can see the colour it was before i started and the finished item

http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/vv198/PuggerS13/rebuild/strip%20down/P6270270.jpg

http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/vv198/PuggerS13/rebuild/strip%20down/P6270271.jpg

I done the same to the manifold/Injector holding plate :)

The fuel rail was all grotty too so it got a nice coating of matt black to finish it off :)

http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/vv198/PuggerS13/rebuild/strip%20down/P6270274.jpg

The Sump Had a few rusty bits so i buffed them back gave it a quick degrease and a few coats of Gloss Black

http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/vv198/PuggerS13/rebuild/strip%20down/P6270272.jpg

Now when the plenum was in the tumbler the ECCS sticker got knocked off... it now looks a bit bland, anyone got any ideas on what i could put on there?

http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/vv198/PuggerS13/rebuild/strip%20down/P6270275.jpg

And again after its had the danny treatment, I'm sure you can tell why its been dubbed the big gay gearbox. I might add you could smell the stench from that stuff you used to clean it outside my house for days.

Good to see u get stuck into her danny

plenum has come up crackin mate

would be nice to have access to ur works machines, u lucky fcuker.

only thing id say to u is to straighten up the sump, its taken a hefty knock to the bottom, u may even find it will restrict oil take up to the strainer mate, not sure bout that, but not worth the risk imo.

when ur sticking it all back together, what i do is stick the thing upside down and fill the pump with oil, and rotate the engine by hand, and basically keep doing this till u have *clean* oil coming out each cavity :wack:
(esspecially the oil feed)

even though the block as cleaned i guarantee u there will be some crappy oil sitting oin the oil ways, mine had been acid bathed and it still was.
btw did u clean the crap out of the main breather u see on the firts few pics??

possible the blockage was causing ur smoke mate:)

Wee update for you all. Not much has been done of late as we've been at a lot of events so apart from collecting some new shiny bits and a spot of welding nothing much has changed. But very shortly she can start going back together

strut tops have both been tidied up:

No real progress going on...

Between work, the missus and the car its been a cnut to get motivated :(

went up the other day tho and got the timing cover finished in paint and got it fitted :)
The cam covers are Painted in Rover Nightfire Red and the timing covers done in Peugeot Graphite Grey.

The Plug covers yet to be finished :)

Mocked up the turbo/elbow setup so i can take measurements for bracing :)

Took my flywheel into work also to get skimmed.. Seen it had cracks on the surface and i panicked lol

So a quick thread on here Via Dunkz confirmed they were just heat cracks and a skin would do fine :)

Heres the damage:

wow this reminds me when my mates skyline broke. massive chunk out the bore. new engine and to be replaced with bits from the old one. lmao. great thing was it was the first engine that we have ever done. and rb25det engine is a bad place to start. but when a bricklayer and a factory worker puts there mind to it. they realise there in the wrong jobs. lol.
but it looks like you've done this before lol. good job and good luck on the rest of it!

Ive not done any Yet... but will be doing some before it gets fully bolted up :) Ive heard the horror stories of XS Power Manifolds cracking... do a little research and find out where to brace :)

Was just wondering, I'd looked into this a while back with the intention of getting a turbo from ATP with the correct housing to mate with the flange. I'd read that the XS top mount manifold was pretty good compared to some of their other efforts and didn't need bracing.

Still, if your sitting a big turbo on the end of it I don't suppose some bracing would hurt :)

Sorry for the Delay in the reply lol

If i remember correctly we cracked it when it was still connected to the gearbox in the engine bay... one of the first jobs we done...

However dunkz engine came out with the crank bolt well and truly still in place and we took it to a local tyre fitter and got them to windy gun it off :)

If your meaning how did we get the actual pulley off.. well that involved swearing, a mallet, 2 massive screwdrivers and alot of wiggling :)

And Spezer help yourself mate Hope it works

surely i get to say if people can use it or not! :) Which you can but, i'd advise keeping it small. Originally we were gonna curve it right down but it would be gulping up too much air. We might still put a nacca duct in the bonnet if it starts lifting at speed.

Why would that be then?! I suggested the scoop i'm pretty sure! (thus why i cut it and didnt ponder over it for weeks on end ) :p

And yeah bonnet lift may be a problem but You could just raise the rear of the bonnet with washers like some people do on here for cooling :)

lol, i've been on about putting a scoop in there as long as i've been on about a top mount! :) the reason you were pondering is cause it took me a few weeks to convince you to do! Its bad enough you take my ideas but i'm not letting you take credit for them. :wack: :D

Woohoo Tomorrow we do the final wiring clean up and Prep for sundays Project Bonnet Vent ;)

Pugger
19-11-2007, 20:10
Right wiring... what a horrible job that is...

But needs must for a tidier bay... We have moved the Battery to the boot, run the main power line to behind the drivers strut and generally stripped all the wires down and made then shorter and a bit more neat,, but its still not done :(

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y280/i2iclan/Pugger/200%20SX%20Build/Rebuild19112007/DSCN2057.jpg

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y280/i2iclan/Pugger/200%20SX%20Build/Rebuild19112007/DSCN2061.jpg

Now we needed a box to connet the main 12v line from the battery to a buzz bar that would connect to everything else... so we looked around... dunkz is using a tupperware box for his but that wouldnt cut it in mines.... then a stroke of genius... why not hide it in the alarm.. (dosnt work, new one getting installed) so we took it to bits :D

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y280/i2iclan/Pugger/200%20SX%20Build/Rebuild19112007/DSCN2060.jpg

just to make a copper bar now and fit it inside the empty case :D

Now for project Bonnet vent :D

Pugger
19-11-2007, 20:15
So as some of you may have seen further back

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y280/i2iclan/Pugger/200%20SX%20Build/Rebuild27102007/DSCN2001.jpg

i have custom fabricated up a cold air scoop to the filter to allow loads and loads of cold air in, now the problem with us doing this is the air needs to be able to flow freely past the filter and not become dead air that may lift the bonnet at speed (we really don't want that).

So we have spend numerous weekends talking about how to let air out, and Dunkz decided the only non "chav" insert vent he would allow me to use was a NACA duct... But to be honest i wasn't to keen. But needs must.. we have no other neat ways to cut vent in my bonnet.

Until Last week... I had a brain storm (yes it hurt):wack:

Id do it at work... So me and dunkz masked the bonnet up and drew what we wanted/thought looked good...

heres what we came up with:

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y280/i2iclan/Pugger/200%20SX%20Build/Rebuild19112007/18112007179.jpg

Its nothing lairy even tho we could have went crazy on it... i have some stainless steel mesh that i have sprayed black to put under it :D

Heres a video of it in action... its so loud because of height of the bonnet off the water it distorts the speaker on duncans phone, We removed no bracing before cutting.

the air thats rammed up to the filter wont lift the bonnet Danny, it will get sucked up by the filter mate.............
if the air going in is under pressure to get sucked in, all the better really.

and btw u can all use the idea of the scoop;)

Right been a while since the update, And a lot has happened!!!

So ill blast some pics of work done etc and some text where needed :D

Right so we hung the Intercooler from a S14 and used a Apex pipework kit (with some mods) to fit it to my S13 nice and tight into the body, custom made 'dexi' strip hangers FTW

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y280/i2iclan/Pugger/200%20SX%20Build/Rebuild2008_001/DSCN2069.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y280/i2iclan/Pugger/200%20SX%20Build/Rebuild2008_001/DSCN2070.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y280/i2iclan/Pugger/200%20SX%20Build/Rebuild2008_001/DSCN2071.jpg

Fitted the DB Power Rad and added some deadening to stop it knocking/rubbing.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y280/i2iclan/Pugger/200%20SX%20Build/Rebuild2008_001/DSCN2095.jpg

Now a Mojor Problem we encountered was that the top mount and Custom down pipe/elbow i bough didn't exactly line up with the standard exhaust position... in fact it was miles off

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y280/i2iclan/Pugger/200%20SX%20Build/Rebuild2008_001/P1130617.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y280/i2iclan/Pugger/200%20SX%20Build/Rebuild2008_001/P1130618.jpg

So in our wisdom we done this to my silenced Apex bitty...
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y280/i2iclan/Pugger/200%20SX%20Build/Rebuild2008_001/P1130620.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y280/i2iclan/Pugger/200%20SX%20Build/Rebuild2008_001/P1130621.jpg

After a bit of choppy choppy twisty pulley etc we got it looking like this
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y280/i2iclan/Pugger/200%20SX%20Build/Rebuild2008_001/P1130622.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y280/i2iclan/Pugger/200%20SX%20Build/Rebuild2008_001/P1130623.jpg

Its an Apex type 1 exhaust iirc and didn't have much ground clearance so we sorted that while we were at it.

So a few weeks ago we made a list of jobs we could think of still to do and posted it on the wall...

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y280/i2iclan/Pugger/200%20SX%20Build/Rebuild2008_001/DSCN2161.jpg

Started work on the Intercooler hot side pipework, ordered up hoses and started trying to work out where to fit it all in.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y280/i2iclan/Pugger/200%20SX%20Build/Rebuild2008_001/P1190627.jpg

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y280/i2iclan/Pugger/200%20SX%20Build/Rebuild2008_001/P1190629.jpg

Yes thats standard pipework we cleaned up :D

Then we sized up the filter pipework and trimmed to suit.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y280/i2iclan/Pugger/200%20SX%20Build/Rebuild2008_001/P1190630.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y280/i2iclan/Pugger/200%20SX%20Build/Rebuild2008_001/P1190631.jpg

and fitted the rest of the IC pipes and silicone Rad pipes

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y280/i2iclan/Pugger/200%20SX%20Build/Rebuild2008_001/PICT0060.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y280/i2iclan/Pugger/200%20SX%20Build/Rebuild2008_001/PICT0061.jpg

So we come to Saturday, by now we had all the pulleys/belts/clips breathers etc inplace and we were all set at about 7pm to fire her up... put in oil, water/coolant done checks fitted the oil pressure gauge...

Then we connected the battery.. and the alarm went off.. the immobiliser was flashing and would not disengage. So Gutted we tideied up and went home...

On sunday mid day we were back and ready to go... had no idea why the alarm was being ghey sooo we decided to ermm rip it out (its getting a new one anyway) :wack:

Dunkz started ripping into it
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y280/i2iclan/Pugger/200%20SX%20Build/Rebuild2008_001/P3020633.jpg

and found this hidded way up inside the dash

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y280/i2iclan/Pugger/200%20SX%20Build/Rebuild2008_001/P3020634.jpg

within an hour he had professionally removed it
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y280/i2iclan/Pugger/200%20SX%20Build/Rebuild2008_001/P3020635.jpg

Which gave us Power

he also fitted my Greddy FATT
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y280/i2iclan/Pugger/200%20SX%20Build/Rebuild2008_001/P3020636.jpg

So sunday night about 8 pm we done our checks, tightened the one little water leak we found and prepped for the start. Got my mates vectra in place to help the battery out.

Removed the plugs and fuel pump fuse and cranked he over to get the oil moving... put it all back together again and.....

Well.. ermmm

Lets say it didnt go the way i was expecting it to...

This is what happened

<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/u5LIFWW_sJI"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/u5LIFWW_sJI" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

BTW it sounds raspy because the was a bolt missing on the exhaust housing on the tubby... we didnt notice until it started up

Huge thanks to Duncan for his help and james for giving us a hand on saturday and sunday!

So this weekend we mainly spent 3 hours trying to get a rust porous sump off of a 1.2 Punto to then find that that if you give James a crowbar and he puts it through the side of said rotten sump to break the seal he will also break the oil pick up pipe too :annoyed:

then spent today doing stuff to mine :D

Its Update time

So this morning we found some rust on the door hinges we had forgotten about.. so we rubbed them back and painted em up :)

what callipers are you using for those discs, i thought they were too big for the s14 and z32 callipers, altho i have thought about using them and GTR skyline fronts before with the same brackets

Dunkz

Were just using a set of s14 calipers. e36 m3 discs are 315x28 and s14 are 280x30 so they'll fit fine.

No you dont ever want to have to do all the stuff we've had to do tho this car

Weve had good times and ALOT of stressed bad times when you keep finding rust in places rust should never be lol, But its worth it now... so close to the end

But if you do start a project like this make sure you have an understanding missus OR a Spare room and sleeping bag :D :wack:

I have the Later :p

Soooo close i can smell the burnt rubber :D

soooo we fitted the S14 calipers (Cheers Dunkz matey again :D ) to my car and fitted the wheels to find that the wheel offset sucked and we would need to space the wheel to fit, so we had some 6mm spacers that we made from duncans car and chucked them on.

Spun the wheel and heard ' dunt dunt dunt' , 6mm's not enough...

sooo we set about making BIGGER ones!!! :D

Ordered 16 Studs (Ford M12x1.5 +25mm) and 16 Nuts from Rally design for about £25 :)

So while the spacers were being manufactured at my work ;) we got going with the studs,

Whipped off the rear discs, cleaned em up and gave them a paint.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y280/i2iclan/Pugger/200%20SX%20Build/Wheels%20and%20Spacers/P3230663.jpg

And stripped the rear calipers/clean/paint
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y280/i2iclan/Pugger/200%20SX%20Build/Wheels%20and%20Spacers/P3230664.jpg

Now unlike some people have said on here in the past YOU CAN fit the longer studs without ripping fook out of your back plate. we may right a tutorial if we remember to take pics of duncans when we do it :)

heres the stud comparion pic
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y280/i2iclan/Pugger/200%20SX%20Build/Wheels%20and%20Spacers/P3230669.jpg

during the fitting of the studs we snapped one  (bad thread we think )

Then we fitted the rear spacer! After some careful measurements we decided of 20mm's for the rear and 15mm for the front would bring the wheels nice and flush.

As danny seems to have lost intrest in putting an update in i'll do one for him. He's got all the pictures of the breakdown and there's been a second one since then. The first one the car just made an almighty bang and switched off. Turns out the half moon spigot on the exhaust cam had snapped off and the CAS had eaten itself so a quick exhaust cam swap and a spare cas fitted and he was back on the road.
The second breakdown was very nearly terminal. It happened about 3 days after an oil change and a new gauge sensor fitted. Driving up to work one morning and danny heard the lifters suddenly get rather loud. Looked down and he had lost all oil pressure. Quickly shut it down and pulled off the road. His lightning quick reactions seemed to have saved the engine luckily. :D
After a bit of investigation it was put down to the thin rubber ring on the nissan oil filters not being compatible with the greddy sandwhich plate but it also appears that the standard oil cooler has a slight leak aswell.
With the bulk of the running problems solved a mate of ours gave dannys front splitter a quick blast of paint the afternoon before EDC at knockhill. Threw it on with the paint still tacky and so following are a few photos of how she is looking now.

looking good mate ;)

that top mount is cool too...

Dunkz
21-05-2009, 01:04
Nothing much has changed in the past year apart from the top mount being swapped for a standard manifold, reason being a bit of weld made its way through the turbo and munched the blades quite nicely. Strangely enough though it seems to have done a pretty good job of re-balancing itself as it still pulls strong albeit quite a bit higher up the rev range and it doesn't smoke. This picture was taken when we swapped the manifolds in august:

http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/vv198/PuggerS13/rebuild/2009%20mot%20prep/P8090690.jpg

So its back in it's spiritual home again, hopefully not for so long this time. First thing I did was pull my 5 spokes off as there's not really any tread left. :wack:

http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/vv198/PuggerS13/rebuild/2009%20mot%20prep/P5201096.jpg

It seems puggers spirited driving has had its casulties:

http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/vv198/PuggerS13/rebuild/2009%20mot%20prep/P5201102.jpg

Guess whats in the box?

http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/vv198/PuggerS13/rebuild/2009%20mot%20prep/P5201106.jpg

T28r, probably means they'll be more bodywork coming up with pugger having useable powers!

http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/vv198/PuggerS13/rebuild/2009%20mot%20prep/P5201114.jpg

So its in for a quick clean up before the mot but if I knew what I did now back then it probably would have been sent straight back for a test. (hammerite and waxoyl are bad mmkay)
It's only had a year but the rust is already starting to come through in a few places, luckily its only very minor surface rust.

http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/vv198/PuggerS13/rebuild/2009%20mot%20prep/P5201083.jpg

http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/vv198/PuggerS13/rebuild/2009%20mot%20prep/P5201089.jpg

A quick clean up with the grinder and wire brush wheel and the chassis rails and a few other places got a coat of the good stuff, if anyone by now hasn't heard of por-15 then their missing out on the saviour of rusty 200's.

http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/vv198/PuggerS13/rebuild/2009%20mot%20prep/P5201094.jpg

I allowed mr screwdriver to check over the sills and he seems pretty happy so there shouldn't be huge amount more required for the mot, hopefully. :wack:
