A few of us doing this over summer so thought this thread might be a useful source of info

- Can anyone who has done CBT, Theory and Direct Access provide some info on the procedures and what is involved?

- Are there any online resources to use?

Scott.

Well I used to be a CBT instructor - does that count?

Though it was a few years ago now:)

Unless you're a complete muppet, CBT is no problem. Its supposed to be TRAINING, not a test, so the emphasis is on the instructor to make sure that by the end of the day you are basically safe to ride on the road. The problem people are generally 16yr old lads who know it all and have no sense of fear, and girlies who have no sense of balance. You guys will be fine. Make sure you do it on a manual 125 though (not a twist and go) as this will give you a head start for the big bikes.

Theory test - I think the rules are a bit tougher now. If you book in to do a direct access training course they should help you through this. My old place had a dedicated PC which had demo software that simulated the test questions etc. You will need to read up though, as the answers are not always common sense :D

Finally the direct access itself. You will need to concentrate a bit more on this. Most people fail on the emergency stop (the trick is to only just press the rear brake, but actually rely on the front brake to do the stopping) and the u-turn (remember to look where you want to go. If you look at the kerb on the other side of the road YOU WILL HIT IT. If you keep your head turned and look back up the road, you will make it round. Also don't try to do it too slow as this will screw your balance. Hold the revs steady, Drag the back brake and control your speed / balance with the clutch and you will be amazed how tight you can turn).

At test time the biggy is DON'T PANIC! A decent school won't let you go for your test unless you have a chance of passing, so trust in their judgement, do what you;ve been doing (now is not the time to try new things) and keep looking on your mirrors:)

Enjoy!

PS, what kind of bike do you fancy once you've got your licence??

Good info Cliff thanks - much more informative than a couple of people who have posted who should know better :wack:

Already got one

Suzuki Bandit GSF600S :)

Just done the online theory test and got 32 out of 35 - not bad for first time :)

I have ridden off road bikes before (scramblers) so hoping should be fine!

Has anyone else heard that they are changing the test soon, so you have to it in stages. So you will b unable to do the direct access after june i think it is.
Not many people seem to know about it though.

Just done research...

New test coming in 2008...

Direct Access age to raise from 21yrs to 24yrs old...

Theory test will be 30% more difficult from August...

I made the mistake of taking the test on a sports bike (VFR400 NC30) which made the U turn difficult due to lack of lock and due to it being a small bike with big front brakes (two 320mm disks and 4 pot callipers) the emergency stop was tricky because if you lock either of the wheels up you fail and it wasn't easy keeping the rear tyre on the deck. I ended up covering the rear brake to make it look like I was using it but I never used it.
In hindsight, I'd take it on and easier to ride and maneuver bike.

So many people think they can jump straight on a 'Blade and wonder how they've ended up in hospital.

I did the theory and reaction test last year. I'd been driving for 11 years, so took a punt and didn't revise much, just read some bike related things or get the DSA book. I did have a go on the example reaction test before going though.

It was dead easy, you should know it anway, the motorcycle questions are common sense. Also the reaction test is just an exersise in not clicking too much and not too little. The clarity of the picture is so low, the test is a joke.

Agreed - the Wife has banned me from getting on a sports bike for 12 months

The design of the Bandit actually pre dates the first design of the cup :wack:

Speaking to the Instructor the test wont be that much harder... its just to accomodate European Regs :)

LOL :)

Just bought:

DSA Guide to Theory
DSA Guide to Riding

That should cover all I need to know for the remaining tests...

Theory on 7th June

Training on 8th / 10th June

Practical Test on 11th June

:)

Anyone know of a good website for hazard perception tests?
