View Full Version : Under fueling or over fueling???
Im trying to get the car set up on the RR sometime this week, so hopefully this should be sorted then, but Im not too sure whats happening?
On a quick gear change, say 1st to 2nd, when you slot 2nd the car splutters a few times before it picks back up again. It revs fine in the gears, the problem is only when you change gear fast. Also, when slowing down, if you give the throttle a light tap it pops, and puts out a very small blueish flame inside the exhaust.
Anyideas????

I may be way off mark here, but when i got mine, it was totally untuned and standard but spluttered between gear changes sometimes when flooring it. I decided to change the cheapest thing first which was the plugs. It sorted it straight away.
which would give the impression of overfuelling as the fuel isnt being burnt by the faulty plug(s).
I had a VERY bad underfuelling situation a while ago - the rolling road guy went a bit weird over it and started trying to take the car off me... matt_j was there too, very peculiar man.
Anyway, it was the HT lead plugs (or something, I'm not very good at this, sorry) that were the problem, and before I got them fixed I drove back from Sunderland and the car would NOT get above 60 mph. Pushing the accelerator hard caused it to pop a lot and splutter and Matt saw some small blue flames at the pipe (it was dark), but it wasn't overfuelling... Strange. Anyway that's fixed now, very easy fix, about £30 for labour + parts in all, most likely a lot cheaper if you have the knowledge to change them yourself, assuming that's the problem.

This sounds very similar to what I experianced after jet washing the engine, I presume some water must have got around the coils somehow, the only difference being that mine cleard up as they dried out, still it means that's what the symtoms are when your not sparking properly though.

ahh yer there was that too, the plug nearest the front always seems to get drenched if you wave a hose under the bonnet.
attempting to cover for andyf's lack of knowledge here, he was putting out the same blue flame as ur experiencing stuymac, what had gone surprisingly on andy's car was the spark plug surround at the bottom of the ignition packs, y'know the the red sleeves that fit around the head of the spark plugs, didn't know why but replacing these sorted it straight away, mind u, this led to a lot of stuttering in andyf's car right the way through the rev range, flat spots galore, he has done 117,000 miles so i gues it could be put down to age.
OI! http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif andyf- u saying me is peculiar, why i ought to do something about this, hmmmm, but that guy at TURBO P.A.C.S in Durham was weird, right little money grabbing bugger, they charged me 50 quid for a RR with no power graph and andyf 70 quid without a rolling road cos they said his car was dead...all adds up doesn't it??

DAM!! These cars are great.....:)
TURBO PACS........
TEHY AER RENOO 5 CLOWNS!!! TRUST NOT THE MAN WHO WORKS WITH R5s.

MAtt_j when you replaced the plug surrounds was it all sweet? I didnt realise you could replace parts on those silly coil packs.
woah chimp, u is very well up on things, yes they are R5 people but they took it on to chip me sunny zx which i had at the time, they are sincerely crap moneygrabbing bastads, insisting that my k+n 57i was hampering performance and a pipercross would sort all this out blah blah blah...
It was andyf's car that had this problem and as comical as it was at the time to 'hic/burp/pffft' down the roads with big bangs of blue flame to light up the roads behind u, it needed to be sorted. The fuel injection place we took it to had seen this problem before and yes u can buy little parts for it which surprised me as Nissan tend to sell everything glued together for massive profit, as i found out on getting a new air flow meter for the sunny zx - ouch!
The problem went but it returned later on cos of some dodgy, tourettes syndrome plagued "mechanic" fitting andyf's Group A fuel pump, and just sealing it with silicone which found its way into the fuel lines and gave you a lovely stop/start feeling every 10m covered on the roads, anyone would've thought we had hydraulic susp. fitted to the car and were bouncing down the road like a couple of G's.....ah....those were the days... http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

Matt! I meant the guy at Turbo PACKSUPANDDIES was peculiar! I meant to say, Matt was there too, so he'd know he was peculiar!
And it was most certainly not comical about my car... well it was, but not when I actually wanted to get anywhere...
And if anyone happens to be in North West Lancashire, do NOT visit Marc's Repair Centre.. he'll bung your fuel lines up faster than a Hippy can hug a tree!
STUY! Did you ever find the cause of your 'laggy' gear changes? I just found this post and realised I get the same effect .. or at least did ... I found the best way of curing it was to keep boost on during gear changes, which usually brought on some nasty clutch slippage... it wouldn't be the turbo losing all boost on the change would it .. ?
Erm, the problem just seemed to cure itself when I put the new engine in.
Also, sorry mate, I forgot to check the car for that gasket, Ill get on to it tonight, and let you know if I find it.
