View Full Version : MX5? would it be gay to get one?
I'm going to sell the soop to have some cheaper motoring for a few months. Limit will be 2k and because I will be spending almost £2k on turbos for soop I don't want a turbo for a while;)
hought about one of these. rear wheel drive and convertible so prob good value for money and if I tidy it up shouldn't lose anything over 6 months or so....... but will I look like a big gay lord driving it
ps no offence intended to gaylords

My concerns exactly - although there do appear to be an awful lot of "gayloads" on this forum who do indeed highly recommend the MX5 - As i've not driven one I cant and wont really comment other than to say I recon i'm going to get one as a bit of fun for the summer.
And for the record im not "a big gay lord"

Wether you look a gaylord or not, you dont care when you start driving though some twisties ;)
I'm going to get one its just been funny to see peoples reactions in work today both male and female. They are a stereotypical girls car but believe it or not watching one on wheeler dealers has sealed it for me!!! lol
I lost a lot of interest in the 200sx when I got a bike ........ I lost the remaining interest in the 200sx after I drove a mates mx-5
Gay or not, they are fcuking good fun
You've got a Supra, the MX5 will be the least of your worries :ghey: :D:D:D:D

Brilliant cars, they must be the best handling cars you could buy for £5k. You don't need to drive fast to enjoy the way it goes but if you do go for it it's surprisingly quick through bends. I'd have one if I could sacrafice the space in the 200.

definately not gay to get one. I am on my second and am very hetero :)
i am fairly sure that they will handle really good etc but in the end you will still look gay in one if you have your male friend in one...
unless you spend quite some cash on the exterior to get the gayness away
the sort of person that is going to judge your sexuality by what you are wearing / driving .......... actually the sort of person that judges sexuality is .... well ...... a twat.
fcuk them .... drive what you like, wear what you want to, have stuff that YOU like the look of.
All of this pandering to be accepted and you will never be happy ... especialy if you are living your life based on the rules made by the sort of person that judges on sexuality.

I have driven several and to be honest its true they are a great little motor, the handling's great and its very chuck able...
However as standard they are far to underpowered for the great chassis, far to slow, yes i know the mx5 is all about keeping the speed up through bends ect.. but i personally would like an extra 40 or 50 ponies that the car could easily cope with.
A tubbied or s/c one would be epic fun
buy one or you will be a big girl gay lord who cant make up their mind like a big girl gaylord does

if your swapping a supra for a mx-5 id say thats definately a positive move into the homosexual world! your driving a boosted 3.0 muscle machine with manly flex, and swapping it for a dinky toy car  ... regardless of how much a 'drivers car' they are, thats a bit of a drastic step!

IMHO in the supra you would ware a chest wig
In the mx5 you would be giving said chest wig a trim and wax.:wack:
the gayest i have felt was when i had to borrow the ex wifes MR2 rag-top, are MX5's meant to be more masculine :D
I've driven one, enjoyed it (although not as much as I'd expected from the orgasmic reports from on here :wack: ) and I still couldn't bring myself to get one
The car itself isn't so bad; I just know how silly blokes look when I see them in them - especially if they're big blokes.
good cars yes, just the hair dresser image lets it down.
I just know how silly blokes look
ow silly YOU THINK blokes look in them .... there is a noticable part of society that think the Elise is a hairdressers car, to feminate looing and you must be a gay IT worker to own one.

They do feel a nice drive but are seriously let down by the lack of power..
Like someone's already said, it shouldn't matter what other people think of your car, clothes etc.. its about driving something that puts a smile on your face.

Have you driven both? Seriously? How can you say there are better alternatives if you've not owned either to compare? Sometimes it has nothing to do with a car's ability or reliability and EVERYTHING to do with it's quirkyness, character, charm and driving experience ;)
Most of the time I drive a Mk1 MR2 T bar, so when I change it for an MX5 next year (or possibly even next week judging by the size of the bill that getting it through the MOT) the gayometer reading will remain just as high. And I still won't give a toss what other people think

:D I'm not, it's just certain people pop up from time to time, spout childish bollocks, and then fcuk off :D
I was trying to make the point that there's more to a car than how it looks :)
Of course there are probably better alternatives. I myself used to think that mx5's were a bit effeminate, and then i drove one :)
granted, my driving career isn't as illustrious as most on here, but it's such a brilliant package, and puts such a smile on my face, and that of everyone else who has driven it/one, that i think it's just ridiculous to pass judgement on something you have no experience of.
It's 'turned' many a person who's been in it (yay, uber double entendre! :D)

People who havent driven one will call it a hairdressers car.
But thats because hairdressers know that them 5's offer very nice balanced handling, even as standard. Just stick a LSD out a 1.8 in them.

Seeing as i've been told off for commenting and not actually driven one, I assume you've driven an AE101 Corolla Levin GT-Apex with Superstrut suspension (double wishbone basically)? If not, your talking more shite than me, to suggest my car doesn't handle.
Stock for stock, I'd say with some confidence my car would rape (any generation) MX5 around a track.
Also, since when has a 100bhp per litre N/A engine been seen as just 'ok'? Far superior to an MX5 1.6 and it's even more powerful than the new 2.0 MX5.
I admit i've not driven one, but was a passenger in a Mk2 1.8 and wasn't overly impressed. It lacked punch and it seemed a bit poorly built inside. It was pretty stable when sideways. Maybe I need to drive one.
From what I saw and felt, it doesn't seem to warrent the hype. As for looks, a Mk1 MX5 looks camp to me. They always have done. I'd personally prefer a MR2.

i have driven one and i fooking hated it, completly underpowered. ok it did handle very well but christ its no nsx! i really really couldnt say i liked one just because of the handling,
a car being great in one area does NOT make up for it being shite in every other! sorry but in my eyes it just doesnt do it. maybe with some huge brakes and a turbod lump it could be fun, but not me. each to their own though
My view on these cars TOTALLY changed when I was at a race track in northern California a few weeks back and saw these over taking Mustangs, Elises and the like :)

You're confusing acceleration with speed - okay, they may not get to the higher speeds quite as quick as a turbo charged car (although they won't be all that far behind), but once they are up there, you can keep it and don't need to brake and accelerate as hard because the handling means they can just carry it without having to scrub it off and then get back up there all over again. You just turn the wheel and go round the corner without the fuss and bother of having to slow down and speed up again ;)

'double wishbone'? Hmm, that sounds familiar :)
I've been in an AE101 GT Apex, but i haven't actually driven it, so i won't pass judgement, but we're not here to discuss 'vs' races. It'd probably be a good race though :) I'm pretty sure there'd be no 'rape' ( )ing though.
However, i will take you up on your 'seemed poorly built inside' comments - yup, the mk1 isn't all that, but the mk2 seems ok. However, the 101 was certainly no Audi! :wack:
Jacks: 'ok it did handle very well but christ its no nsx' Indeed, they're not, but show me a good NSX that you can pick up for 3.5k, and i'll happily accept that as a valid argument :) they're an eveyrmans car, totally classless, that's part of the appeal. And i still maintain they're not underpowered. As has been said, the perception of speed is pretty damn impressive, and teh actual speed that they carry though corners even more so.
My other half's pretty much boggo R limited can happily take maybe 20-30% more speed into corners than My 255 treaded, Tein equipped, braced, stiffened S14. And more importantly, it feels even faster, and far more connected when it is doing it.
And the brakes? well, for the above reason, they don't really need them, but to be honest the 1.8 single pots are immensely impressive for what they are

The MX-5 is one of those cars (like the beemer 3 series and volkswagen golf) with a very strong image behind it. If you're ok with that, then go for it (I've seen some, in the right hands, corner on the road faster than I would have thought possible) but personally I would prefer less of a stereotype attached to the car I drive (which is why I have a 200SX, not an Impreza). Having said all of that though, I along with most people, I suspect, wouldn't really assume the bloke driving an MX-5 is a gay hairdresser.
It really is all down to how you feel about it.
My view on these cars TOTALLY changed when I was at a race track in northern California a few weeks back and saw these over taking Mustangs, Elises and the like :)

I think you misunderstood my post; read it again, and you'll see I was just giving (one of) my reasons for not having bought one, despite having been in the market for a small RWD roadster.
And big blokes do look silly in most small cars, not just MX-5s. :D The Elise is slightly better because you sit so low in it. ;)
That didnt stop you from getting it, becuase you can look beyond any percieved image to what the car really is
Clearly not, 'cos I didn't get an MX-5 :wack: :D
Who gives a **** what other people think? If the car is good then get one for what it can do - not what reaction it will provoke to the morons at the side of the road.
My gf had the gheyest colour of all - metallic turquoise but I really didn't care. I loved driving it and kind of forgot about how I looked in it because it was such a pleasure to drive. Sure it's spartan, has poor interior plastics and has a dose of scuttle shake but I loved the rifle-bolt gear change and near telepathic steering. You could feel exactly what the car was doing beneath you and the ride got better and better the more "progressively" you drove ;) Cracking little car, I'd happily have one myself in a less homo colour with a turbo. Spares are cheap as chips too.
i have driven one and i fooking hated it, completly underpowered. ok it did handle very well but christ its no nsx! i really really couldnt say i liked one just because of the handling,
a car being great in one area does NOT make up for it being shite in every other! sorry but in my eyes it just doesnt do it. maybe with some huge brakes and a turbod lump it could be fun, but not me. each to their own though
The MX5 was never intended to be an NSX type car - it was mazda being very clever on their target market - people who grew up wanting a small, british style sportscar (eg. Lotus, MGB, old triumph, Healey etc), who now have grown up and have pots of money spare to spend on luxury items, but who didn't want the reliability / cost etc concerns of running an 'orginial' (and japanese people who are crazy about anything British)
It was based on the old lotus elan (circa 1970s - clicky (http://www.seriouswheels.com/pics-1970-1979/1971-Lotus-Elan-S4-red-fa-lr.jpg)) - and it was designed to look like it, sound like one, handle like one, even down to the standard wheels looking similar. Because the target market was more interested in 'character' than being able to smoke everything else on the road, they went for a small revvy engine, with a pretty similar power output to the original car, so you have to 'work it' to go quick, but you do feel like you've acheived something. Compared to something like a 200, they are slow - but the 200 is missing something, they just aren't as rewarding to drive.
So there you go. If you own an MX5, you aren't :ghey: , but you are one of the pipe and slippers brigade ;)
I like MX5's. Nice little cars. Driven a few.
I think one stigma with them is that people think people buy them when they can't afford a proper convertable, Elise, S2000 etc.. Not my opinion BTW.
They are a bit common now aswell (especially the older ones), as soon as the sun comes out you see hundreds of the little buggers!
I'd have one though, definately easier to live with than an Elise
Ahh for god sake. The only thing gay about MX-5's are these "I want an mx5 but dunno if people will like me  " threads
