ello ello,
Old chips should be fine, no less reliable than a new one, its just you cant really send it back if it is duff. I have a second hand chip in mine.
As for fitting, i went through alot of hassle finding chip carriers etc for mine and wasted a day driving around having people frown when you tell them you need a surface mounted chip removing, in the end i drew together a crack team of amateur electricians and did it ourselves, in actual fact it was pish easy. So much so that I surface mounted the new chip when the carrier was being fiddly. Woohooo!!
All you need is a steady hand and a solder sucker, or know someone with one. Careful handling the chip if you are prone to static!
