View Full Version : Faulty boost gauge reading?!
Hiya folks,
I wondered whether you could shed some light on this for me. I've just fitted my Autometer boost gauge into the centre console. The boost pipe is only connected into the gauge and not at the other end yet. The gauge reads zero until i insert the light into it and twist to lock it in place. Then it shows 6 psi.
If i apply pressure to the light fitting the needle moves. Is this expected? Or am I missing the point somewhere and when I plumb the other end in, will it go back to zero?
I am now almost bald after fiddling with this today.
Any help would be great as always.
Is the gauge held under duress? (is it rammed into the hole? :wack:ooer!)
The gauge should read gauge zero (ie showing zero at standard atmospheric pressure) when not connected to anything, whether its a long bit of open ended tube, or just the fitting....
The thing inside is know as a "bourden tube" and is mechanically linked to the needle. Sounds like your lamp is catching on the tube and squeezing it will move the needle too....
IF (and i mean IF here) you cna get to the mechanics of the tube, inside the casing you might be able to tweak it back to zero HOWEVER there is no guarantee on the accuracy of the gauge after this....
your car makes an extra 6 psi when you turn the lights on............
and your complaining :wack:

I may have to take an even closer look inside the bulb hole to see if anything is "breaching" the bulbs space so to speak. Thanks Egon.

:D
.... and everyone else is spending £x on performance mods. Just switch them lights on and whoooosh!
No worries....pics might help if you do find anything....
(4 year apprenticeship in instrumentation FINALLY comes in handy!!) :D
My first post on here was on a boost gauge that i hadnt connected up properly!!
May be next weekend before i take the car to bits again but i'll get the camera out.
It might not make any difference but I didn't try power on to the light once it was in situ. At first I thought it might be something to do with the power but then I realised that there's no electrical contact from the bulb to where it is positioned.
