Hi All

I am thinking of getting broadband. How do you lot rate it. I think I get a discount as I have a BT staff number, which will be a bonus.

I know it says 512kps but does it actually run anywhere near that.

Cheers

Ok boys sit down, passed these on the keith so I might as well let you into a small secret.

http://portal.plus.net

I am with these guys they are great. It cost me £33 per month, for the first year. Then it drops to £22 per month. This is because you pay off the hardware route in the first year. Which also comes with a hardware firewall. You can install it yourself so thats all you pay £33 per month for the first year :) no £80 for the hardware + installation + your £27.50 per month rental.

Other benfits are that you get a static IP ;) it runs at 512kps up and down. But there is an option to increase that to 2mg down at not extra cost. Someone told me its to do with setting up the router properly.

Don't tell everyone ;)

Si,

Sorry for being a bit fik, but are you saying you wouldn't need to buy anything else on top of what is provided to enable you to get broadband:confused:

If not, that's a big thumbs up:)

mum's the word;)

Hi Si.

What does it mean by BT install, Is that just to plug the router and the line into your PC. I take it the broadband just plugs into your normal phoneline and BT or whoever just updates your connection to your house.

Does broadband require any digging of pavements?

Cheers

Dave I am not sure, as it's from memory. Have a look at the site. you can defo get 2048Kbps

It's a complex site, just speck up your package, and have a look

No digging if you mean ADSL. Broadband just means highspeed connection basically. If you want cable and it's not available and enough people want it then its digging of roads time.

ADSL just uses the standard copper pair.

Dave, phone lines used xDSL are capable of between .250 and 2Mbit ishh

Al, The Plus net package spreds the sost of buting the modem/router over the first 12 months so much it easier fo pay for.

Dan, the newer self installs are were you plug a signel filter into your phone line your self instead of an enginire coming out ta fit a special socket that does the same thing. The enginer still has to make changes at the phone exchange though. Make life a lot easier (and cheaper)

got NTL cable, or will have when they come and fit it.

600kbs download, not sure what up is, but it's £24.99 inc hardware.
or
1Mbs for £34.99

I wouldn't rely on their email though, messages go missing then arrive days, weeks later.

Can't comment on the QoS either but it's my only option here other than satellite.

Quality of Service (Which for BT is 0)

Only problem with NTL as loads of people at work have found, is that it is a node based system in that people share nodes. The more people that are online, the less bandwidth you get.

This stuff is starting to lose me as I am not really good with the hardware side of things. Anyway a lad in the office is on the NTL 1mg package. But some nights it gets slower than his old ISDN line    apperently there are loads of people in his area with NTL.

Aye, some NTL notes can be highly populated if the houseing is very dence. i.e. loads of flats, back to back tresses.

I got to have a look at some of NTLs node maps as part of the project im working on and (presumably) the bandwidth is shared amoungst these houses.

I'm on Blueyonder 1meg too. Have had 210kbs for a few seconds at the start of a downlaod, but it drops off gradually and sits at around 120-130 from then on:D
