Hey all,
need some advice on buying a domain name please.
I am starting my own business selling Martial Arts supplies and would like, eventually, to have a comprehensive web site which I can sell stock from. I found a good site name that was available on Domainsaver.co.uk for about £50 for two years.
My questions are; what exactly am I paying for?
How much would it cost to have someone to build a website for me (I know some basic HTML but that's about it  )?
Are there cheaper ways to get the domain name I want?
Thanks,
Jonny

Have a look at www.UK2.net.

What you are paying for basically isnt anything to do with the name, but actually the administration of (to keep it simple) the internet! - Seting up of where the name points (to which server etc).

Thats where most of your money goes, you are then the registered owner (depending who sets it up for you depends whether you details are available to the world on said servers).

You then have the right to the domain, it never technically becomes yours, especially .com's and you may lose it if challenged, so be careful not to breach copyrights and stuff!!

Mate get your self down to UKreg.com, I registered all four domain names for my after hours company :D :D :D for around the £40 mark.

Then for hosting i've been really impressed with TITAN (Keith I should be on comission ;) )

More importantly, can you get me some proper Thai shin/instep guards for a good price??

I'm sick of coming home covered in very painful bruises from my crappy foam jobs.

I run a web site company and noticed that you may be displaying stock.

You may end up using a database, or ecommerce software so check that the webspace can handle this type of interaction and coding, such as php. This web space tends to be a little more expensive.

Domain names are about £5 per year for .co.uk's and £10 for .com's try my partners site, webspace is about £40 per year http://www.fido.net

Standard sites usually cost £1000 - £1500 from my company, may sound a lot but you get a lot in return.

Good luck
:)

Thanks for the advice chaps :) .
The web site is still a good ways off (I'm still in the middle of the business plan for the shop!) but I wanted to reserve the name as it's catchy and will also be the name of my shop ;) .
Managed to reserve the domain name on Titaninternet (cheers Si, Keith [as in co-founder Keith?]) for £11.75 for two years :D .

Oh and if you're interested the name of my retail outlet specializing in martial arts materials and memorabilia will be..........

Drum roll......
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
. MARTIAL pARTS ..... what d'ya think?

Cheers again,

Jonny

PS. Dave_S13, know what ya mean about those shins. I can get you a set of leather ThaiSmai ones for £40 delivered. Will hopefully be able to drive prices down once I've got the shop up and running. There'll be a 10% discount to SXOC members of course ;) !

That sounds good m8, PM me your email ad and we'll sort something out, it'll be end of the month though, I'm skint at the mo.

Good name by the way, and good luck with it.
