View Full Version : Is it worth it

I know the title doesnt give much away but what I am asking is, what would be the better option to do with my AW11 as the sills got taken off today as the project to get the car back to mint condition started a few days ago, and as the sills got taken off, it was noticed that someone, whether it was the previous owner or th eone before, had just painted over rust and when touched it just crumbled :(

so, bearing in mind there is only about £500 spare to spend on the car and that is for EVERYTHING, ie I also need a new exhaust and new seats as the original leathers were taken out, is it worth fixing, or more to the point, can it be fixed? I have my brother in law coming down to look at the car next weekend (he has just done a welding course) but isnt it true that once the sills and arches start going (also need those too) the floor pan is next?

dude looks like a laydee

I am lazy, I would cut my losses and sell

then I realised you mean "skirts" ..... at which point you could possibly get it going on £500 for new seats, zorst etc.

but £500 could be better spent somewhere else surely ? ...... its a car, and not the worlds greatest, I would just sell it !

Repair sections for that area aren't too expensive and it's hidden away behind the skirt triangles so you could do it yourself - depending on how far gone the rest is, given that it's not had any attention for some time by the sound of it.

Good luck finding decent leather seats for it ;)

Yeah keep it! If you were doing the work yourself would easily be less that amount...

The thing is, even if I get the bits welded, its going to need a spray job to get the colour to match the rest. Other option would be to find another mk1 that hasnt got rusty sills and arches, but that is going to be difficult to do.

nothing, I just think you missed a few zeros :D

Its proving difficult to find the seats too, at a decent price that is.

It has been garaged for a while as the car is no longer any good to me ie two became three and as I dont have a full license yet (should have passed by now) the car is going to be put back to mint condition (or was and either I was going to sell it or use it when I pass, but I soon found out that that was quite impratical too. But I still dont know what to do, hence my dilemma.

Sell it, with the few bob you make from that AND the 500 set aside, to repair it AND the cost of insurance you would have paid to drive it, you could actually buy yourself a rather nice, more convienient car.

Yes it wouldnt be as exciting, but there is plenty of time for excitement once you have married that rich Welsh Sheep farmer

if I sell it I would probably only get about £200 the state its in, and its not insured atm, its in the garage so I wont be saving any money there, its basically not costing me anything at the moment and I already have access to another car to learn in.

sheep farmers dont look at much else, never mind a woman ;) :D

If your brother in law can do the welding then it wont cost much at all to fix. And that area is under the skirt so it doesn't have to be a tidy job, just make sure you rust proof the feck out of the repair.

but then thats another problem, I dont know if he would be able to 'bend' the metal into shape and put it on, and I cant show him how it used to be as both sides have gone

There is a good selection of pictures of that area on IMOC.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I think your mind is made up:nod:

sorry, I know it seems that way but its really not made up, im just thinking that if its going to be put back to mint then I want the job done tidy not just a guess of how it should be, but, I also dont want to break the car or sell it as it is, hence why I am in so much of a dilemma :(
I know I dont have much of a budget to put it back to mint, but, in that budget I want as much as a good job that can be done as possible.

I looked into restoring mine to mint condition and it worked out at around £1500, and it had no major rust, just both rear arches and a small bit on the floorpan.

I can understand your dilema, if it has to be mint though your going to need a lot of cash or be prepared to put a lot of time into it, (I'm in the latter camp with mine at the moment).
You've got to think rationally, is this car a good base for this treatment or would it be best to just get rid and look for a more suitable example later?
