View Full Version : Do you think Autos are soft?

I notice JB drives an Auto - that makes two of us!

Having driven both (man/auto) I say there's nothing in it and actually prefer the Auto (laziness).

Does this mean I'm soft?

Anyone else have an opinion?

dont have to worry about launch control, I dont get on with them myself, something to do with me engine braking when approaching junctions and going for the clutch, result well the abs works then.

Yeah, engine breaking was my main concern, too.

All you do is take the overdrive off, same effect!

And you're right about launch control - to he honest that's my favourite bit about the auto - just put your foot down and hang on!

Ooops!

I didn't mean engine 'breaking'.....I don't even want to contemplate that!

When I bought mine I took an auto and a manual for a day each to try.

To be honest I didn't think there was much in it. The manual had more immediate response when overtaking but if you needed to change down it was quicker in the auto.

Away from the lights however I think the auto is definately quicker. Just press the throttle and bingo.

Also there's less wheelspin in the dry which makes for quicker acceleration times.

Besides I'm an old git (35) who can't stand the strain of coping with three pedals http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

I drive an Alfa 156 Selespeed Veloce (I'm an old git too 37) and it's always really great to get back into my S13 with the third pedal, but I couldn't do it for a living far too lazy!

I have no problems with autos, I quite like them. They're much better to use in todays traffic.

I would like an auto for the traffic jams and manual for all other times.....

It's just the missing peddle that really does my head in!!!! Nothing wrong with Autos though...

I pefer a manual one! so u can feel the "real" turbolag of a 80's designed engine..also heel and toe...etc..
of coz I am talking about driving for fun, not for daily use esp. when u did uprate a heavy clutch
:P

I prefer the manual for interactive more fun driving. But autos are cool when stoned and driving around town.

i wouldn't buy another though.

Not soft, just depends on driving temperament.

Thank God. A sensible transmission debate. Keep it up. I agree with most of you, auto's better for lazy/ town/ stuck in poxy traffic driving and manuals for a bit of fun and pretending to be a racing driver (including missed gear changes- REVVVVVVVVVV! You've hit the nailk on the head there Steve. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

Ripper, I actually meant stoned and/or driving around town http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

I suppose it's lucky the 200 will do 0-70 in second so we manual drivers could get away with being lazy around town.

I think I could handle having an auto as a company car (Ive done about 36k since Jan this year!) but Id HAVE to have a manual for pleasure.
The autos are, like we all say, great for sitting in traffic and "crawling along", but how would an auto help on a track day?
I think if you want to take the car on track - manuals the way to go - the brakes (as SteveSadler revealed) really take a hammering on a track day - and thats WITH engine braking.

Manuals for pleasure, autos for leasure(ly pace!)

Matt (NOT trying to get banned for 1 week! http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif)

I have a manual 2***** and an Auto passat .... the problem occurs when you change from one to the other and

1)forget to dip the clutch in the 2*****, stalling it at lights (embarrassing) and even worse:-

2) putting your foot fully down on the clutch in the passat to realise it doesnt have one and stopping the car dead (unexpectedly) from about 40mph ....... even more embarrassing.

Firstly, I think DaveR has about three candidates for the 'banned for a week' prize http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif.

Secondly I, too, swap from Auto to Manual reasonably regularly and don't a problem.

EXCEPT for the time I borrowed a 1.8TD Mundeo and pulled out of a side turning in front of 60mph traffic.

The word 'W@NKER' sprang to mind when;

a) I realized I WASN'T in an Auto (engine screaming it's nuts off!)

b) I realized I wasn't accelerating any more.....

How the guy behind didn't hit me I'll never know. But I WON'T be making THAT little mistake again.....

He took it quite well. Sort of. If I'd have been him I think I would have beaten me to death with a large stick....

I actually damanged my leg and side in the Army so if Mr.Nissan had not made an Auto version I would not be havin fun drivin one. I dont really miss gears especially in the crawl to work...but wouldn't mind tearing my tires apart sometimes and a clutch does help play here..!!!
