im thinking about sitting my bike test as well im the only bugger here that doesnt have a bloody bike and it takes the fun out of doing a run with the lads when they al have bikes and im ragging the **** out my car to keep up lol..

but this is the first time ive thought about it so i have some questions.

im 23 if i sit my class a (i think thats the standard licence test) do i have the 2 year restriction because im a new biker? or does that only apply to under 21's

as i dont fancy getting my licence and having a bike thats a third as fast and my car for 2 years

how much does it cost to sit the tests, how long do you learn for???

etc etc.

as i say havent really looked into it and my mates have been biking that long the rules have bound to have changed since they passed.

I only passed my test 4 or 5 years ago and since then they have changed the rules about 300 times so fcuk knows what the score is now.

BUT ... you can guarantee that its only going to get harder and harder every year.

so the sooner you do your test, the sooner you will have a bike and be able to ride it ... all be it in 2 years time .. if you wait 2 years to do your test you wont ride a decent bike for 5 years time, and so on.

sub 21 and it's usual restricted (33bhp) then after 2 years you have what you want. Hence 19 year olds with gsx's.

21+ and do a direct access course, learn on a 500cc only with an instructor then buy what you want there after.

between these years is the accelerated access course which means you can do anoher test to speed up the process but it's just not worth it.

CBT valid for 2 years.

Still have a theory, hazard and pratical test now.

16-04-2007, 11:55
but i understand if you have a valid driving licence (full) you buypass the theory test as youve already sat it for your driving test.

also insurance lol ive just had a quote for a gsxr 600 with and it was ok but an r1 is 9k lol

what i wasnt to know is does your ncd from your car insurance count on the bike policy as ive just tried adding my 4 years motor ncd on and it threw the policy throught the roof lol

and what about car points do they count on your bike insurance.

16-04-2007, 11:59
You have to do the theory and hazard perception course regardless of your car license i'm afraid.
One of my mates recently had to do it and he's been (car) driving for years.
It took him a week to go from no bike to Honda CBR600RR

It is a gorgeous piece of kit though

Johnny
16-04-2007, 11:59
You will still need to sit a theory test as they are different for bikes and cars

ncd on car insurance has never been accepted in the bike world AFAIK

Any motoring convictions on your licence are accepted actross the board ...... you dont have a separate licence for riding a bike, its the same licence, just with a bike mentioned on it.

Do your direct access (DAS) course. It'll allow you any bike of any cc after completion.

It varies in length from a 3 day course to as long as you need but costs a few quid. A few years back they were charging circa £500 for a 5 day intensive including examination.

Are you after a honda-like high revving fast machine or a grunty torque motor? If you're after the first get a smaller cc e.g 600 o begin with. A modern bike will still do 160+mph.
Otherwise get a 600 twin like a bandit/hornet/SV for fun but less immediate shock factor.

Oh and coming from someone who used to sell the stuff, don't skimp on protective clothing! Spend at least £200 on a lid (a cheap Shoei is better than an expensive cack model). Make sure you get all the rest too.

i cant wait to look like a power ranger after taking the piss so much all these years.

im thiking about going for a gsxr600 as insurance isnt too bad with me having my 6 points

curlie467

Ncd is transferrable as i and a couple of friends have done it in the past. Was a while ago as it is 13 years since i got me license!

Defo do it though and dont put it off any longer.

Start on a 400 or 600 as we all know, its the rider who makes the difference!

Since when was a bandit or hornet a twin?

I think he must have meant a Bross rather than Bandit

I'm soooo tempted to get a bike, but I'd kill myself very quickly...or rather, someone else would haha.

Get all the armour mated, there's some really good leathers with arm/back leg, finger and just about every other sort of protection

Johnny

I'm soooo tempted to get a bike, but I'd kill myself very quickly:

 nah mate ... despite the popular rumour going around by folk that dont ride, the throttle on a bike has loads of positions, not just WOT or closed.

You dont infact have to ride everywhere at 160mph ... its true

Mr OCD
16-04-2007, 15:22
Going through this myself... just bought myself a Bandit 600 which will then be upgraded within 6mnths of passing to a GSX-R600...

Bought myself a high quality leather jacket and helmet (£400) and plan to buy boots / gloves before the CBT...

Just waiting for my drivers license to be returned (dont ask) and then will be sitting CBT which is about £80-£90...

Once the CBT over then will sit the five day intensive course (DA) and buy the trousers I will need...

In all it will cost me about £1250 to get started without the cost of the bike / insurance / etc...

CBT - £90
DA - £500
Helmet - £200
Jacket - £200
Trousers - £150
Boots - £100
Gloves - £50

Insurance on a 97 GSF600S Bandit is £240 fully comp :)

Plan is to be riding my bike before June... :)

im really thinking about it all now. but im impatient lol i want it all done now. hahaha

just thinking i should have done it years ago and id have good insurance now lol

but for a gsxr600 1998ish with my 6 points is £500 odd.

ok thats almost as much as my car but we all have to start somewhere

so bascially

the theory test
cbt test
then the advanced course which is 3 days and a test

is that 3 full days driving or like 5 hrs or something.

the only thing thats putting me off is the fact it took me 4 attempts to pass my driving test lol

mind you i was alot younger at the time lol.

king_j
16-04-2007, 15:24
do you have to use your own bike for the test/lessons?

as i dont have a bike lol..:wack:

Dont think thats quite right...

- CBT first...
- Practical / Theory second...
- DA third...

DA is over five FULL days...

If you get a bike mate then let me know the address to send the flowers to :p
Ps 4 attempts to pass your test, tut tut.....

So did i, and look at me, Mr Schumacher no2 (not ralph) :D

GrahamB
16-04-2007, 15:27
If you've already got some decent road sense then the test should be a piece of pi$$ :D

You should find it's 3 full days out riding ;) (with maybe a little classroom time)

Johnny
16-04-2007, 15:28
is that 3 full days driving or like 5 hrs or something..

think it depends on the place.

Mine was 9 -5 with a half our stop in the morning at one of his mates places for tea, donuts, biscuits, depending where we stopped.

Lunch somewhere and a nother 1/2 hour break in the after noon, normally at the metal works place in Chippenham for tea and more biscuits.

Fcuking near killed me, I had to go home everynight and have a bath, I was that knackered

Mr OCD
16-04-2007, 15:28
do you have to use your own bike for the test/lessons?

as i dont have a bike lol..:wack:

Nope - you use the schools own bikes....

Usually knackered Honda 125's and 500's :wack: :D

mine was also 3 days with the test on the 4th - although I started on a monday and the test was on the friday, but my instructor let me tag along on a forth day, not being taught but just following someone elses lesson .... it was good experience

king_j
16-04-2007, 15:34
hmmm dunno if i could sit on a bike that long... lol

and sideways. ive got to do something to keep up with latta and his quest for thrills....

he wasnt happy the other night on the bypass with his r1 against my car though. i made him work for it so i did.

king_j
16-04-2007, 15:35
so can these three days be taken when you want or am i gonna have to book time off work to do them. ie could i do them 3 saturdays

GrahamB
16-04-2007, 15:37
You should be able to do them over weekends

Although I'd make damn sure you actually can ride before you plumb to do it all in 3 days ;)

Do not buy the bike then do the test on it as you'll NEVER do the U turn on a GSXR :wack:

king_j
16-04-2007, 15:40
na wont be buying the bike for a while like

ive only riden a bike once and it was a 250cc trial bike on the beach and well turning was scary :wack: and changing gear was some what new.....

hmm ill have a think about it..
maybe worth getting some lessons on how to actually ride a bike first.

Mr OCD

Agreed it is but learning on a bike yourself will make the CBT a bit easier ... :)

I did motorcross when I was 14-16yrs old on some pretty meaty off road bikes... not ridden a bike since was 18yrs old but dont expect any problems to be honest

I think the hardest bit for me will be the awareness bollocks :wack:

Wobble wobble wobble......:D

King_j..Enjoy the CBT, at the end of the day it stands for Certificate of Basic Training, its basically an assessment to say you've been shown the basics and you know the front from the back of the bike. You can't fail as such unless you've got the motor skills of a drugged elephant. :) - everyone enjoys it.

I did my licence in 2004 (did cbt and theory at end of '03) learned in th cold, freezing rain, and almost got taken off the bike on route to the test centre by a taxi that hit some ice. (8am..early january :wack: ) ....failed first time round as i wouldn't go above 40mph on a stretch of road - was i fook as like going over 40mph on ice!!.:wack:

Trying to get the g/f to do her CBT and test soon, its a bit dodgy on IOM because everyone does their tests on 125's, restricted or not.(wish mine was that easy) :wack:

:D ... he was going up against an R1 ....... the damn things are just TOO powerful and agressive to use anywhere near to there full potential on the road.

the bike was designed for track work, becuase of this I have not seen one being ridden anywhere near its full potential on the road. People are far quicker on lesser bikes, purely because lesser bikes are easier to ride quickly.

to go quickly on an R1 ... sh1te dude you have got to have the reactions of a fat bird in a donught shop

It's all got so complicated now. Did my bike test nearly 20 years ago when you rode round the block 4 times clockwise and then 4 times anticlockwise. An emergency stop and Bob's your uncle.

Examiner was on foot and just walked around the block to observe you on various corners. You could go past him and ride like a plank on the next two or three corners!

I know dude, ive ridden most bikes from 50cc to 1100cc and i agree:nod: , they are bloomin quick! Thats what i meant as they accelerate sooooo rapidly that they will be doin well over a ton before the sx can get to 60. got trampled in a doughnut shop stampede once, ouch.

good luck to all you lot doing your licence.
best thing i ever did:nod:
passed mine in december and ride bout 50 mile round trip everyday to work.
winter sucks:mad: but now the sun is shinning its the best feeling ever.

just take it easy and practice your u-turns as thats pretty much the hardest part of the test:nod:

the rest is all just common sense, but common sense/logic i found had to go out the window to do my u-turns, no matter how much you think the bikes gonna topple mid point in the u-turn DO NOT PUT YOUR FOOT DOWN!
just give it a bit more gas:thumbs:

follwoin on from yesterday, was out on the back of my mates r1 last night and it scared the shite out of me on the way out, but i was hoocked by the time we came back.

**** me those things can rev, and he couldnt take it to full throttle due to me being 13stone and over the back wheel lol...

so im calling to book my cbt etc today :)

also im having a look online the now (ebay) at some of the gear. now as everything on ebay you get good makes at bargin prices and you get cheap shite.

now because i have no idea about makes etc etc.

are any of the things on ebay any good

i know the helmets should be no cheaper than £100 what about leathers, boots and gloves?

will any do as long as they are real leather??

Mr OCD
17-04-2007, 08:53
I'd advise against buying off ebay to be honest... its essential that the kit fits you properly... not so important with gloves / boots but certainly helmet, jacket and trousers...

I searched online then went into shops and haggled them to meet online prices.... :)

Scary on the back of a bike isnt it :D

king_j
17-04-2007, 08:57
been on may other mate zx7r before and it was fine

but fook me the r1 just keeps going. lol

and he was saying the 2 of us on his r1 at that throttle will be about the same as the r6 with one person on full throttle.

lol so im getting an r6 or gsxr 600 then lol...:wack:

just checked the local bike training firm.

£525 all in to pass the test.

that included all your tests and lessons etc etc. so not bad at all.

mark_ashley
17-04-2007, 09:21
OCD is right mate, you really need to go into a shop and get the sizes fitting correctly, i bought some leathers off ebay then just sold them again as they werent right and they can be uncomfortable when new at the best of times

i have been meaning to do my test for a couple of years now as i love bikes and so i took the plunge last summer.. but it didnt get ver far.

my advice though is befor you start booking stuff do the theory

i did this last summer and got it out the way so i knew all the rules and little things like the "life saver" which comes in handy later, and it means you dont have so much to think about nearer the time... Then befor i know it winter rolled round so i didnt do much else.

But last thursday i did my CBT, which as has been said is not an exam, you do some manuvers in a car park and then go for a ride on the road until you are capiable of handling a machine safely. it could take 3 hours it could take 7.. depends on the person :) I did my CBT on a Honda 125 (because i was older - 16-19 y/o have to use a moped i think), it was pretty basic, however it was sooooo much fun!!!! And i learnt that regardless of how gay i probably looked, doing 30mph feels like 70 in a car - at least it did to me. Biggest advice.. keep the visor down as flys hurt lol.

I have a coule of weeks wait now then im doing my DAS, cant wait. My one is lasting 5 days, i chose this because I have never ridden a bike on the roads before, and unlike others i think its important i know what im doing befor i get on a performance bike - and lets be honest thats what people are planning when they do their DAS.

But also if you pay all that money for the course you will feel bad for failing if your not good enough after just three days :(

It all depends on who you go with to do the DAS, go with a good company and you will have so much fun, I just wish i did it last year.

hope some of this helps,

mark.

more or less the same as car theory, but with bike related bits and geared towards a bike.

Tyre tread depths, road positioning etc

king_j
17-04-2007, 09:39
so i take i need to learn this before the test then. i mean they dont teach you it at the cbt or anything.

no mate, some things are like road signs etc

i bought a bike test book off ebay as early as possible and just read it through a couple of times.

most of the stuff repeats itself so by the time you have read it through you should be fine.. i got 35 out of 35 so it must have worked

but yeah its different, more based on personal safety and what to do and watch out for on the bike

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES EVER BUY A HELMET OFF OF EBAY

I don't think I can stress this enough personally

You need a near perfect fit and you can only achieve this by going to a shop and trying lots on

Took my GF out on my R1 on Sunday (first time she's ever been on a bike so probably not the best bike to start on :wack: ) She loved it

It's also almost impossible to get an R1 to the stop  as either the bike goes skywards instantly and throws you off the back or you'll be doing a ridiculous speed before you get to the stop :wack:

i agree, or at least find the one you want then buy it off a reputable dealer off ebay.

dont buy second hand, as we all know they break inside after being just dropped, rendering them useless the second time round..

pornstar_pete
17-04-2007, 10:34
or why not try them on in shops, if you find it cheaper on ebay then you can buy it. just like i did!!

I decided to do my bike test last year, as i'd never been on a bike before i decided to do my CBT first just to see if i liked it!! If you can pass a cbt in 3 hours then the bike centre you learned at are sh!t, there is no way then can assess u that quickly (and that came from my instructor) No matter how good you are my guy gave you a full day, 9am til 4pm (at the earliest) so you get as much ridin as possible. Its 3 hours in the mornin in his yard then 3 hours road ridin.
I was buzzin after doin the CBT so booked up straight away for my direct access, was another £450 (£100 for CBT). They way he worked it was for the DA you got 16 hours tuition plus test and retest if needed. i did it over a month taking 2 hour lessons. while doing my lessons i passed my theory test.

Passed my test first time no problems, except almost forgetting to switch off my indicators 3 mins into the test. told me i was 2 secs away from him tellin me which is an automatic fail.

test is really easy, its just normal bike riding with 2 manouvres. emergency stop (from a speed of >23mph) really easy as you know its coming cos he sends you off round the block as he stands at the side of the road and then you have the u-turn. you'll get loads of practice at these, or should!!

If you dont have any gear just now most places have equipment you can use as they know its expensive if your just starting out. i used they're helmet and gloves for CBT then bought my own.
Cant remember who said that you shouldnt buy a helmet under £100 but they meet the same safety standard as a £600 helmet, not saying buy a £50 off ebay but startin out on small slow bikes its enough to get you by til you know you want bigger and better bikes.

for your CBT all you really need is a good pair of boots (ie timbies, cat but not steel toe caps) a warm windproof jacket and a pair of jeans if you dont have leathers (next best thing) they should have gloves and helmets you can use.

Just enjoy it, once you get out onto the road u understand why people love bikes. Even on lessons i couldnt wait to get to DC or national speed limits and here the guy in my ear going "get it up to speed as fast as you can" :D:D

Well i might as well get paid to do something at work!! :D:D

thats a better way to do it i think, i had 8x 2 hr lessons. first 4 were still on a 125 then last 4 on a 500. that way your already into riding the bike and just have to get used to the extra power and weight. turnin a 500 is easier than a 125 so u-turns are easier aswell.

good thing about the late nights too is you dont have to take time off work, i used to go out on lessons at 6pm. hopefully ur guy does this too

thats probably the weirdest thing, that and being told to ride it. bikes have a wet clutch so you dont damage them.

its a little weird that u have stuff to do with ur feet that u normally do with your hands and vice versa but its worth it.

People will tell u to buyblack as u never know what u want but i've gone for a nice silver/grey/black combo as all the bikes i want are in that colour

Nowt wrong with kenny roberts colours....:smitten:

I had a jap import xjr 400 for a while and that was fun..swapped it for a zzr400 and the was great. cheaper insurance that the 600, just as mad and looked the part too....

I know i'm gonna sound like an old codger here but working your way up to full power/bigger bikes is a good way of gaining confidence. I did my test years ago and did the 50cc-125cc-250cc-600cc-750cc thing...
A year on a DT50MX is enough to drive anyone nuts!!
Still hanker after an RD250LC again though...that thing was gonna lose me my license or kill me, but what a rush....:D

Then again I started on a 955 .... and I was so scared of the thing, paranoid about dropping it paranoid about opening her up too quickly, paranoid about gonig into corners too hard .... that it made me ride sensibly, I had so much respect for that bike.

I dunno how people ride bikes like that ..... my nextdoor neighbour restored an old 70's 125 that was his very first bike.

I took it for a spin, it was like going down the road on a 2 wheeled lawn mower .. just not as smooth :wack:

He was trying to get me to take the thing out on to the DC .. apparently it would reach 80 mph ....... Like fcuk I was ..... it felt bad enough at 30mph, I am not doing 80 on it.

Sweet looking bike though ... love the 2 stroke smell and sound

R6's are nice but u will kill yourself on them for a first bike unless your a bit sensible.
Mate had one when he passed his test and loved it, sold it to another guy as a first bike and told him countless times that it will chew him up and spit him out, but did he listen, no. one month later straight thru a hedge, flung 10 feet in the air, bike totalled and a few weeks in hospital!!!

Get it done and get it done soon as the DA law is changing.

Relax and have fun and remember "WHERE YOU LOOK IS WHERE YOU GO!!!!" So never look at the kerb even though you want to!

Never looked back since I did mine. Passed and bought this the same day:

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/john.ambrosen/fazer/fazer2.jpg

Then had enough of the upright streetfighter style so I wanted the bike I'd always hankered after since I first liked bikes and bought it 8 months later:

But the game moves on and this is leagues better than both:

Cant remember who said that you shouldnt buy a helmet under £100 but they meet the same safety standard as a £600 helmet, not saying buy a £50 off ebay but startin out on small slow bikes its enough to get you by til you know you want bigger and better bikes.

for your CBT all you really need is a good pair of boots (ie timbies, cat but not steel toe caps) a warm windproof jacket and a pair of jeans if you dont have leathers (next best thing) they should have gloves and helmets you can use.

Personally I would disregard the above. Although each to his own.

The british kite mark most people remember to look for no longer has any intrinsic value. When we put lids out on display some of them came separate on the box for gawds sake. They're not really a mark of value anymore. We sold Arai RX7's and the like (£500) which had them and these 'other' horrible little lids for £40 that were a 2-piece polycarbonate mould that also had them!

From extensive personal experience, I'd say to look for a bottom end Shoei (looking around £100-150 depending on seller), a bottom end Arai (around £150+) or a midrange AGV (still lagging behind in the fit/options/materials market IMO) for a first time lid.
Once you've found some you like, be swayed by the fit. I found Shoei fit my head better as I have a smaller head. Arai are generally larger than Shoei but still comfy and the AGV's were massive and didn't fit me at all. Try them all and make sure you wear them for at least 10 minutes. They should be really tight to start with and fit like a barsteward.

You can wear pretty much whatever you like, but having seen some really stupid things (200bhp VMAX with NOS - guys wear openface lid, shorts and flip-flops in summer) I'd recommend spending a few quid getting as much kit in as short a space of time as possible.

You said that you hoon around with your mates right? If you can't afford expensive leathers (Alpine Stars spring to mind) try getting separates for less money. Having any part of your body exposed is a bad idea. One thing we used as a shock tactic when people came in wearing jeans was the fact that at 40mph if you hit the floor and slide, it takes 4 seconds for the tarmac to wear through to your bones... :hurl:
Take a serious look at back protection too if your leathers don't come with any

...and relax.

If you want any info on what to look for/what not to look for let me know

Always wear them, wouldn't be without. Don't want tinitus which is rife on a bike due to engine/wind noise if you don't. Try and help as much as I can too by having a Schuberth S1 supposedly one of, if not, the quietest lid out there.......

You'll be fine on the lean angles as long as you're not trying to get your knee down :wack:

did my cbt today, never ridden a bike before, but the instructor was brilliant, certainly wont be getting an R6 for my first bike though, think im gonna get a 250cc, the 125cc i learnt on was quicker than i expected.
good luck King J with yours, and just enjoy it and listen to what the instructor has to say.

Its all relative matey, if you learn for your test on a 500cc bike, you'll get used to it, i thought the 125 felt fast for the couple of hours road riding i did on the CBT......the big question is, are you hooked?. :D ..... Everyone i know said they were totally commited to getting their licence after doing it.

Getting my bike licence still is the biggest buzz i've ever had so far.

well im back
never got a chance to pass my test,

pretty pissed off to be honest

what did i get for my money today lets see i got a load of theory and crap i knew already and how do i describe it..

3 hrs playing on a bike

my problem is the slipping clutch on slow turns etc
and he can only take 2 people out at once on the road and there was three of us and i was the weekest (or most hard work for him)

1 guy about 60 years old and diying on a scooter and a lassie who had been driving her boyfriends cbr500 for the past 6 month illegally.

so i was the obvious one to tell to rebook

so i called the manager up to rebook and the guy went off his head explaining the reason we go out so early in the morning is to get everyone out on the road in turn.

hes meant to be calling me back but i wont hold my breath.

When I did mine I'd already been riding for 6 months :wack: (before you had to have CBT before you rode ;) )

Remember CBT is Compulsory BASIC Training (with particular emphasis on BASIC)

It's really just to make sure that if you have a bike you're not going to be a danger to both yourself and others while you're out on your bike. It's not meant to teach you how to ride

how can you have lessons if you dont know how to ride a bike??? :D:D
The cbt is designed to say that you are safe to take the bike out onto the road on your own, (obviously its not like a car where the instructor has some kind of control over the vehicle), you understand the positions you need to take and how to perform maneouvres (pullin away from the side of the road, turning, roundabouts) its just basic bike control

like other have said my cbt day was from 9til 4:30 with 6 hours of this actually spent on a bike, 1 hour theory in the morning, 3 hours in the yard learning clutch control, going round cones, gear changes and braking practice. after lunch spent 3 hours drivin around town!!

I wasnt the best with the clutch but you learn, just like u did in a car. My lessons mixed me with other riders of diff abillities, always just 2 of us out tho.
ranged from guys ready to sit their test on 500's to a woman takin her test on a 250cc scooter. the more experienced guys help you as sometime you follow them so you learn their positional sense and stuff

i see alot of nitro helmets, my mate has one and says its a cheap one and he wont wear it.
yet the school im learngin with its all they have is the nitro ones. lol

now i see them advertised everywhere and are fibreglass skin instead of the plastic/poly ones.

are these helmets any good?

There is only one way to find out ... and unfortunately, you are not the perfect candidate to tell us, seeing that no one would notice the difference ! ;)

Ross B
25-04-2007, 09:51
Yes and no.

Depending on what model it is, I remember as far back as the 600 model up to the 1000? They're fibreglass, fairly solid structure, 1 piece manufacture with removable cheekpads etc IIRC. They are quite heavy though. The later models were lighter but they were still more than my little head could cope with on any spirited journey.

Also quite noisy because of the chin vent etc. Depending on model again, the chin vent used to become quite loose after some use and not stay shut properly.

Oh and did I mention they were huge? Let me know what model it is mate and I'll try and be a bit more technical. I haven't been in the game for a while :)

Actually before you do, pick up the most expensive helmet, it will be called the Arai <something> Rossi Replica.

then put it down and pick up the Arai <something> in the normal colours and save £150

Seriously, graphics on a helmet can and do increse the price of the helmet by £150 .... thats a lot of money just to look like your favorite biker .... and at the end of the day, it isnt fooling anyone, people wont think you are him.

We got that quite alot from people looking for a lid.

For those that made it their priority, I always pointed out the Shoei Raid range. They were really really comfortable, had little to no venting barring the visor but were very quiet.
The Raid 2's are out now and maybe more, but for noise they were awesome.

Helmets - I've said it before, but good fit is everything. Go to a bike shop with a good range of lids, and buy the one that fits the best. Get advice from the shop staff, because what you think is comfy straight off the shelf is probably too big.

Don't worry about brand or price - get the best fitting lid that you can afford.

PS: whatever pants Rossi wears, he should try some different ones that don't give him warm up lap wedgies every single race.

Result! As Graham said, they squeak after a while, usually the friction between the ankle armour and material. If they're boxed new then you may have a little squeezy bottle of lubricant. It's shite. Get something else. Some bikers recommend WD40, some even recommended chain lube :wack:

Now I'm "roughing it" in Hein Gerick stuff

Poor man, I actually applied for a job there after my time at J&S but they said I didn't qualify with enough experience
Kit is ok though.

We had a guy at work who spent over 20k having his missus R1 covered in carbon fibre with GP spec underseat exhaust etc. It was nice. Even got himself and missus some custom fitted Arlen Ness leathers (matching to own colours). They never rode it. It was stored in their front room as a show piece...

When I see people wasting money like that now I just remember how much his missus looked like a little boy :D

Great thread :)

Got my licence back from its trip to the DVLA... (dont ask) so now its time to book the CBT :D

I do want some leather boots / gloves though before I do it ... can anyone recommend anything sensibly priced?

I currently have a mid range AGV helmet... and a decent Weise biker jacket :)

I have riden bikes alot in the past (off road) so the CBT shouldnt be a problem at all... just want to get started on the DA!

Davey3legs
25-04-2007, 17:38
You can even use some sturdy walking shoes for your CBT, you're not going to be doing laps of any race circuits yet. :D

I'd just go for some bog standard gloves, buffalo always do some good summer/winter selections.

Boots - depends what you want, mine were £40, i'd look at the Hein Gericke range of stuff and see whats comfortable for you.

Jaysus there seems to be some brand snobbery on here!. :wack: I only know 2 people who bothered to spend more than £250 on a helmet......they both race in the Manx GP! ). All my kit cost about £260 in total! (got cracking deal on hein gericke seconds :D )

Don't let anyone tell you to spend as much as you can afford, just use your noodle.

26-04-2007, 00:02
the best kit money can buy is infact worthless if it dosnt fit right.
£300+ lid that is a lose fit is as bad as not having a lid at all.
get good gloves that fit well.
poeple who ride without gloves are just thick.
remember falling over while running and how much your hands sting.
no imagine doing it at 80 mph and not 10mph.
even a minor injury is a nightmare if you cant use your hands.
next you need good boots.
not stupid money power ranger stuff but something with some ankle protection.
most of all enjoy yourself

Do your direct access, plus theory, I had to do 2 (car and bike) within a year which sucked. The questions are all the same give or take a couple. Then go out and buy the fastest bike you can afford because not only will you get hitched on speed you will regret getting one that is a bit slow! Im just 22 been riding for been riding 6 years now with 5 year nbc got an insureance quote on a Yamaha R1 for £230! Also worked in a motorcycle garage for the majoraty of my working life! It's a bit long in the tooth now but still a decent bike

Not quite as "sporty" as R6 or GSXR though, although that could be a good thing depending on how long you plan to spend in the saddle ;)

I take it you mean this one...

As above. The RF600 shares its engine and suspension/wheels with the first generation 600 Bandit, so that should give you an idea of what to expect reliability and performance wise. Any that are still around are likely to be completely knackered or virtually unused ultra-low mileage, one granddad owner pieces, so choose with care.

If you can stomach the extra insurance costs, the RF900 is much, much, much more bike for similar money.

the rf600 is more on insurance???
whys that?

or did you mean cant stomach the insurance on the bigger bikes?

i quite like the look of the bike and lets face it, its gonna be my first bike lol

ill either crash it or get bored of it quick

any specs on it?

is it really that out dated?

TBH it wasn't really that well received when it was released :(

It was a capable bike at the time but was just overshadowed by the other bikes out there :(

Looks are a little different though  If you like the look and can find a decent one then go for it

Sorry, I meant that the RF900 will cost more to insure than the 600.

The RF600 was always a bit of a budget sports-tourer, even when new.

So was the 900 for that matter - but the engine in the 900 was fantastic (based on the old air/oil cooled GSX-R1100 lump), and it was a performance bargain, a real sleeper. It won't compare to modern bikes, but it will be very torquey and flexible and easily fast enough to scare you silly. By contrast, the engine in the 600 is a bit of a wheezy slug.

If you're after a cheap R6 or GSXR then the RF isn't it  :(

You'll find the suspension too soft and the engine won't have the same top end. You may find it'll have a decent mid range though ;)

right guys next step.

ive got my theory test tommorow. now the theory part wont pose a problem

but the hazard perseption will

ive done the online ones and paid good money to do them too.

but im not doing well in them as what i class as a hazard and what they class as one are two different things.

a girl cycling her bike on the pavement i dont class as a problem unless she changes direction to come onto the road.

but when you watch the mark my test bit, it says her being on the pavment is a hazard and full marks if you spot her on the pavement and only 1 mark when she changes direction to cross your path.

also ive bought a bike

cbr 600 with a 900 fireblade front fairing.

stage 2 dyno jets braided everything lol. k&n filter new tyres the lot.

looks and goes well too.

Right the way you look is that you click on ANYTHING that could potentially become a hazard ;)

I pick up my new toy tomorrow ;)

Will post then ;)

Nice :D

You certainly arent hanging about :)

I have just bought myself some Hein Gerrike (spelling?) boots and gloves to match my leather jacket :)

I am thinking of going for synthetics for the trousers so they 'give' a little more than leathers...

Currently sourcing bits for my bike this month then will be stripping it down ... anyone know how hard a Bandit GSF600S is to work on?

Tempted to strip the engine out of the frame, etc and REALLY go to town on it...

CBT / Theory booked for this month then will do the DA in June...

Very, very easy indeed.

No need to take the engine out unless you need to get to the crank or gearbox (which is extremely unlikely). Everything can be done in situ - there's loads of room.

Just bear in mind that all the fasteners are smaller, and most of the torque setting will be lower than you are used to, and you'll be fine.

I was thinking of getting everything off the frame so could paint it ... its got a little rust on the welds on the frame... saying that a dremel / rust killer and paint would tidy it up :wack:

I need to sort the brakes (seized from standing outside for a while)... replace chain... then needs some general TLC.

I also need to paint all the plastics which is going to be fun :wack:

its not down to how many times you click, its if you click too many times in quick succession!! i thought i'd failed a clip as i clicked 14 times, didnt fail it. also ended up with a score in the 60's.

if it moves, click on it, if it looks like it could move click on it, even its a lamp post dont bother!!

Mine soon... and started stripping the bike down last night :D

king_j

lol so did i.

the alarm wasnt working right on the bike the fob wasnt disarming it.

so i stripped the remote down (datatool veto evo) and cleaned the corrosion off the contacts for the battery fired a new battery in it and its sorted.

just got the head lights to have a look at as the dipped beam doesnt come on at all with the twin light conversion.

so i need the fairings off to have a skeg at the wiring.
