View Full Version : Your career...
I was having a conversation earlier with a mate and she was saying that she knows a lot of people did a course at uni but a few years down the line they ended up working in an industry totally unrelated. I know my old boss had a degree in Geology or Geography but was an IT Manager - is this often the case?
I seriously want to go in IT Databasey/Development stuff and couldn't really see me doing anything non-IT related!
Are you doing what you wanted to do when you were younger?
I envy anyone who knows what they want to do LOL. I'm 26 with a half decent career in Finance but have still not decided what I want to do  :(
i geared myself up at school and college to be a building surveyor (following in fathers footsteps) but it didnt come about.
When i came out of college (with f'kin good grades i might add) i really really didnt wanna go uni - so i started applying for jobs as a surveyor but no-one would take me without a degree :(
Saw a job advertised for an Insurance Clerk, breezed the interview ;) and it went from there really - now a few years on and although i kinda regret it, i still enjoy insurance so what the hey is what i say :)
edited to say that i dont think i would have made it as far up the management chain in surveying as i have in insurance

Mark, I work for Ford Credit.
I wanted to work close to manufacturing, so working for a 'bank' isn't ideal...

just gcse's,only went to uni to get drunk when my mate was there studying;)
that said i do ok and i like a challenge(and with some of the stuff i've done over the years its been very interesting,as well as the strange people i've worked with)
didn't go to uni, decided to skip the beer and shag fest and start earning money... i did land the job of my dreams (worked for Eidos making Championship Manager) and got made redundant at 21... just as i was about to rent a nice flat in Wimbledon, one that I couldn't really afford on a salary, nevermind without a job.
Then landed number 2 job, working for Dell building the www.euro.dell.com site which a team of 9 of us were enabling over 6 million a week in sales which outstripped most the sales guys... then got fired for gross misconduct because Dell has a management team thats simply awful and I got bored, messed about... u know the score.
Then was hired as first employee at a startup company thats still running (we secured round 3 of investment when everyone else was going bust)
Job of my dreams really is a racing driver... or flying a DC3 coast to coast in the US shipping fruit.

lol, bitch, i was the artist, and as usual, spent 8 months designing 3d intros and an interface for a game called Championship Manager Allstars, where you could build a team of players from the fifties to modern day.. and it got canned... so the only work i did that was published was boring intro's to the Champ man game

I did Computer Science and maths at uni.
Am 32 now, and am an IT manager for a chemical company.
Hence surfing this board all day.
When I grow up I want to be either an archeologist (want to be on Time Team) or preferably and international playboy millionaire spy and assassin :-)
Got a degree in French from Durham Uni, then worked in the car industry, followed by getting a job as a network manager for Alstom (never underestimate the power of bullsh!tting at interview).
Then decided I'd better get a qualification in IT (as I was now doing it) so got a degree in Computer Sciences at OU and moved into software design for a large firm of accountants in Brum. Now have my own business designing accounting software.
Didn't even know what a computer was when I was at uni so the answer is NO.
I did an MSci in Physics at Bristol Uni - had a superb time but knew I didn't what to go into anything Physicsy after that :)
Never really knew what I wanted to do really. Tried working in the City for an Insurance company, didn't like it. Tried working in IT (just support stuff) for Vodafone while at Uni and quite liked it. They offered me a decent job and Im still here, 4 years after finishing Uni. Doing network integration mainly.
Going to be changing jobs soon though, still in IT however.
I had no idea what I wanted to do/be (still don't)
Got BSc (Hons) in Applied Physics with Microelectronics and Computing!! (Mouthful or what!)
And I currently work for Kuoni Travel! :D  :D
Got a degree in architecture and now design fenestration.... erm....windows:rolleyes:
Left school at 16, no qualifications, joined Army for 4 years ended up being an Kitchen/Bathroom Designer when I left the forces which I really enjoy( dead easy, pays well, not to many hours)
No, and I never went to Uni either
tried to do AS levels but preferred drinking and ladies so failed everything, Doh! then saw an advert for Advanced Modern Apprenticeships at Nissan Technical Centre Europe! got the highest score on the tests and got a 3 year apprenticeship, with a guaranteed job at the end although no guarantees where:( . So although I haven't been to university yet I am doing what I want to do:D
I did an HNC in IT and now have a job in IT Support. I am also at uni part time doing Computer Studies. I used to have a real passion for computers but lately the fun seems to have been taken out of it. I think in the long term I'd like to keep computers as a hobby and become a solicitor or even set up my own business.
Having my own business is an ambition of mine. Another ambition of mine is to get a PhD. :)

Do you mind me asking who you work for? The reason I ask is I do work for some civil engineering consultants and contractors in and around Nottingham.
I went to Poly to do Mechanical Engineering and ended up working in Electrical Engineering/Project Managment. Kinda related I guess.
I did my first degree in Chemical Engineering. Managed to get honours but not much else...went to work for the government as a Chemical Engineer but was given the chance to cross-train into programming about 6 years later :) Did that and have never looked back since :D
In the meantime I've completed a Maths degree with the OU and am about to embark on an MSc in maths with them...but have no ultimate plans to get a job using this...its just for fun :D
Soo...all my plans to be an engineer never worked out  Happy enough in IT and suspect I'll probably stay here for a while :D
Got a degree in Music at Southampton Uni...!! (^ hours of lectures per week - not bad for a 'Full-Time' course;) )
What am I doing now...???
Working as an accountant:rolleyes:
(music was never going to fund my 2*****:D :D  )

Won National design awards aged 16, the rest has been laided out in front of me... so no choice really ;) Got poached from college by a Uni then when I was in my second year my current company made me sign a contact with them :D :D :D :D :D :D
Bummer really as I hate making decision ;)
Si :)
Did a very wide ranging Degree that went from film theory to TV production, Computer games to web design. Won an award for my web site i did as my final year project.
Then went to work for a computer games company in london for 2 years which was cool but london sux. Couldnt get a job doing pooter games any where when i wanted to move and am now working for a council producing a interactive TV site... which is basicly web types stuff. Guess i should stick to what im best as although doing computer games was fun...
Gissa job Si :p
Read Politics & did HND Journalism
Now an IT Services Salesman.
And very happy with it - only did the degree so's I could get into Minolta as a Copier salesman to serve what was then regarded as the best apprenticeship for business to business salesman to get.
Believe me - if you can sell copiers on foot in the West End, everything after that is a doddle.

Join the club mate... I had to replace one of my intercooler pipes over xmas a nice 300 note     Is it me, well in the design industry but the best/most prestigious jobs are the worse paid! I work with massive clients every day, so you would have thought I should be paid the big bucks. Well no i've been offered other jobs, without the client list but the pay was 2 1/2 times what I am on now. Guess I am just stupid or just plain love my job.
God that was a rant!
Si :)

Oh sorry Yak, yep we will be doing some more stuff soon so I'll PM when it comes around :)
Si :)
How much! I like my nice cheap S13 :) mind you the duy selling it had to hand out £340 to reattach the intercoller that had been blown off while we were testing it and replace the turbo gasket... at his expence before i bought the car :p
As for pay some times it does. The more people want to do the job the less you get pay as there is more ppl then jobs. Take (Yak opens a pandoras box) the firemen, there are 22 applicents for every job so they dont need to pay loads to attact people. Naff clients may well give less qudos but pay more to attact good staff?
I've worked on EAs FIFA world cup game which people were falling over them selves to work on. While I'v also worked on kit Actin Man games where attacting people to worrk on them was difficult inside the company let a lone from out side.
ahh another rant :p
Cool ill await the PM.
No Degree, work in the R+D dept. of a large computer manufacturer on a really ****e Wage and getting deeper in dept.

Just started to study mechanical engineer at the federal institute of technolgie in Zurich (something like the MIT:eek: ) if all comes as planed (I doubt it but noone can abandon my hope;) I'll be a 'Master science for mechanical engineer' in February 2007:D
Then I'll try to earn vast money to be able to launch a tuning shop (making money with the rich bastards and offer cheap to the real enthusiast;))
Sounds great eh? hopefuly turns reality!
I didn't go to Uni so I can't vote in your poll
(IMG SRC = BIG FAT TOUNGE STICKING OUT THING)))( (!)( "11" Uu1u1u1 U!1
baileys good !!u1uI!u Uu ! uuu !
I'm in IT and that's what I wanted to do. Mind you I wanted to be a programmer, and did sh!t loads of C++ stuff. By the time I finished in Uni, I'd got bored with programming and got really stuck into hardware and networking. That's what I'm doing now. My first job was as a programmer though!
