View Full Version : Warm up / cool down
So how long does everyone do it for? I generally warm it up for about 15 minutes, and then cool it down for about 2 minutes. Is that being over cautious on warming up? No more than 3000 revs til it's warm? Opinions everyone?

I warm up for about 8 minutes usually but don't really get the chance for sustained boost, nor do I currently go over 5000 rpm.
Warm down I generally make sure I've travelled the last 2-3 minutes home at a low speed then leave it about 20-30 seconds and off.

The warm up sounds about right 10-15 should do it, I also like to let it idle for around 20 seconds at startup before I move off. as for cooling it realy depends on how you've been thrashing about, generaly through town traffic etc 40 seconds is ok, Ive just been out for a thrash around the back roads to the point I managed to get brake fade, pretty hard with my brake setup. and traveld the last 2 miles off boost, and the turbo timer still kept it idleing for 2 min 33seconds. which aint bad.

Didn't realise how long it takes for the engine to get up to normal operating temp until Steve got his oil temp/pressure gauges.
I reckon it must take at least 20 mins!
I know the coolant gets up to temp quicker - but that's got a thermostat to help.
Bit of a bugger if you don't do long journeys or dont like idling the car for 15 mins prior to driving.
On the subject of cooling down, the cars - when new, came with a little card which says to leave the car idling for at least 30 secs and not to labour the car for the last few miles prior to this.
I have the Blitz MSTT - turbo timer. Judging by you times Nat, you've got it set on LOW, as mine shoots up by about 30-40 secs if I just boot it in 2nd!
The most I've had it time out for is about 6mins 30 after I took the car on track for 20 mins.
It seems that the more boost you run (the pressure, i.e. 15psi instead of 12psi say) the more the turbo timer times out for.
Very good piece of kit me thinx!
I'm glad I've got it now - the last few weeks has seen a lot of M'way driving (you should see the state of my fly covered front bumper!) and the TT's been showing well over 5 mins for a lot of it, especially when I give it a bootful for any amount of time (Dave/Steve/Dan/Barry - you know the sort of thig I'm talking about!
Hope this helps

So would a turbo timer be a good investment? Is it easy to fit? How easy/ Would it raise my insurance premium?

No sorry Matt, I dunno what ur on about m8, I never boot mine around. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif
Yeah, a TT is a good investment. It helps to look after your turbo and if you go for the Blitz MSTT, it measures 0-60 and 1/4 mile times too. It's £135 (but Matt can probably sort u one a bit cheaper if you ask nicely). It won't affect your Ins prem.

The Blitz TT's are easy to fit!
For an extra £13 + vat you get a harness which plugs between the key barrel and wiring loom. This means ther'es a lot less cutting etc.
You then have to earth it out, scotch block/solder a wire on the ECU wiring loom and wire into the handbrake switch (if its in Timeout mode and you drop the handbrake, the engine cuts out).
Prices (from the catalogue) are as follows:
Basic fully automatic TT (with voltmeter) £65 + vat
Dual (TT and boost/peak hold gauge) £91 + vat
MSTT (does speed/sprint times etc) £104 + vat
Like I said, the wiring harness is an extra £13 + vat and the delivery is about £10.
Grreddy and HKS do them aswell if you'd prefer.
Let me know!

Back to the original question:
I usually give it five minutes or so before I give it some welly but I am very careful when I bring it back. Usually give it 3-4 mins at idle before I switch off.
This bit about waiting FIFTEEN mins before booting it - REALLY?

From the web site there are two new models:
The FATT Type S has all the features of the MSTT including; 0-60mph, 0-120mph, and 1/4 mile sprint times, variable speed warning function, peak speed record, current speed display as well as being a fully automatic turbo timer. Price remains unchanged. £70 + VAT
FULL AUTO TURBO TIMER DIGITAL COMPACT
This is the latest design of turbo timer from Blitz. It's smaller and smarter than the older model with a new easy to read digital display showing how long you have left to wait before it switchs off. It also displays air temperature, battery voltage and has a 10 minute stop watch £84+vat. http://www.blitz-uk.co.uk/fatt-dc-10.gif
I like the new DC model, it's out in June.

Matt,
Can you get the Blitz TT's and if so could you get them a bit cheaper if a few of us wanted one. I like the FATT Type S with the appropriate harness at £70+vat plus the harness, but I would like to know all the features of the DC version before finally choosing. Anyone else ?

Im definately intersted. After all, its a new toy innit.
I havent seen the old one, but the spec on the type s is attractive, and at that price, unless it looks like a housebrick, Id be up for it.
errmm out of interest. If my immobiliser arms itself after 30 seconds of cutting the ignition. Where does that leave me with the engine trying to run on? It is not an alarm, just an immobiliser.
Hi guys
Have to admit - this was news to me about the new rannge of TT's!
I'll do a bit of work on it and confirm the prices. May be able to get a group buy going on????
On the subject of immobilisers, no probs.
Your immobiliser will just cut in when the engine cuts out, not when you take the key out. Alarms are a different matter though - you'd have to wait for the TT to time out before you could arm it.

1/4 mile mad!
I want to get a turbo timer for the car. Was looking in *cough* some modified car mags... http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/wink.gif and saw the Blitz one with the speed gubbins too. Matt, what kind of price could you get me one of the FATT type S for, along with the harness, etc? Question, I've got a new Cat 1 alarm system which locks the doors upon arming, etc, how would I go about using the TT with the alarm?

Right guys, went to Racelogic today - YIPPEE I've got the gauges now - they look great and should be 100 times easier to plumb n compared to Steves Autometer jobbies, due to the jap fitments etc - no sump removal! (Even though I was told one of them wouldn't be here until mid July earlier last week!)
When I got there, I had a bit more of a look round - loads of stuff - SERIOUSLY had to pull myself away from the boost controllers though - I've just supplied Steve(Carter100) with an HKS jobbie and even though its not plumbed in yet, I WANT ONE!
A couple of things - Spooky, Cat 1 alarms and TTs dont go very well together - thats about all I can tell you(!)
The prices Dave quoted previously are correct,
£70 + vat for the FATT type S
£84 + vat for the DC
The Type S is a special edition to mark Bitz' 20th anniversary. This is only available for a limited time. Racelogc bought about 250 over and had 65 left! If you want one - get one sharpish!
I wasn't avilble to find out anymore about the DC. It is basically a faceplate the size you see above with an umbilical cord to a unit the same size as the other TT's, which would be hidden under the dash somewhere. I assume the harness then attaches to this.
I could probably get a bit of a group buy going, alttough to be honest, theres not a lot to play with, what with them only being £70 - £85!
If you want one, let me know and I'll see what I can do.
Mobile only, as I'm away on buzyness. On the plus side, I'm only about 25 miles from Racelogic, so a deal may well be pheasible (Racelogic do not post direct, so it would have to come to me and then I'd have to send them out to everybody - more expense).
Should be back to check my mails etc and fit the gauges on thursday (errrrrr, I mean to vote, cough, cough!)
I thinks that's all

Matt,
Count me in. I too have a 30 second immob and a Cat 1 alarm. I take it this is going to be a problem! Either way, it'd be pretty good just for the 0-60 times and everything.
The model I'd like is the best looking lone with most gadgets http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif
