Ive installed XP pro and after the first normal shutdown everytime afterwards the computer locks up on shutdown
Has anyone ever come across this problem as im running out of ideas on how to sort this out and may have to use 2000 pro instead.

Any help would be great

Cheers

I had a similar problem with 2000 when I installed a piece of software that wasn't designed to work with it. As I recall it was EZ CD Creator. Have you installed anything else other than XP?

Checked Microsoft knowledge base which came up with this (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307274) and this (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;313290) . There are more results if it doesn't take care of the problem.

No i havent unfortunately it was a clean install and i put nout else on.
Im thinking it might be a driver problem with the bois or something.

Not sure i dare flash the bios

Does it hang every time or just some/most of the time? What motherboard have you got and do you have a network card installed?

Nothing wrong with flashing the bios, just MAKE SURE you have the right one. I've flashed a computer 5 times in a row virtually to get the onboard raid controller working. Would not usually think a bios flash would fix a shutdown issue, unless it was mentioned in the bios readme / fix list

Hangs everytime.

Its an ECS K7S5A MOBO with onboard audio and AmiBIOS. No network card installed either

Flash the latest BIOS (latest for the K7S5A is about 10 October 2002 I think, just been fiddling with one of these yesterday) if you haven't got it already. Tried updating through Windows update? I've built 8 machines recently around the K7S5A and every one of them would hang on shutdown after the first round of updates. Solved after updating through Windows update the next time around. No idea what it was though. Definately flash the latest BIOS though.

Yes. ECS are a bit awkward as well and list 2 BIOSes for the K7S5A, one for 1.0 revision boards and one for 3.x revision boards. It's printed clearly on the actual motherboard though.

Is it down near the pci slots where its printed???

Yes. I can't remember exactly (it was as long ago as yesterday when I last looked :D ) but it's down the bottom of the board somewhere around the PCI slots. Sorry I couldn't be more accurate.

ok cheers ill have a look and hope it works.

Do you need a special prog for the flash of the bios?

STiMPY

Yes you do. It's usually included in the zip file with the BIOS file. If not, you can download the latest flash util from the ECS website. You'll also need a minimal DOS bootdisk to flash the BIOS. The best one is DRDFLASH.EXE available from http://www.bootdisk.com Download it and run it. It will extract itself to a floppy. You can then copy the BIOS file and the flash util to it. Reset and boot from it, then flash the BIOS.

Im prettey certain that it was rev 3.1 so do i just flash it with the most up to date bios? Its just there is a hell of a lot of them in one list

You want <a href=ftp://ftp.ecs.com.tw/bios/k7s5a021029tsd.exe>this</a> BIOS file and <a href=ftp://ftp.ecs.com.tw/bios/flash/aminf335.exe>this</a> flash util.

ATLAST i think ive cracked it :D :D

Seems like it was a driver problem in the end with the sound card or modem.

But the BIOS flash went well aswell thank god :D :D

Would be a good idea to run Windows Update as well. There's been a LOT of fixes, even since SP1.

Would there be any problems with doing this with a less so original copy of XP (if i ever had one ;) )

No problem at all as long as you're not using a blacklisted key (the most popular being the one beginning FCK). If you are, there's a little *ahem* util, to generate a new one and another to change it for you. But I didn't tell you that :D
