Got a muppet first liner with a problem - he's got a couple of NT workstations that cant communicate with the PDC on a DHCP NT domain. Can't ping by name or IP, comes up with "bad IP address <servername>" when you ping by name. Host files are correct, even put in an entry for the PDC and it hasn't sorted it. He's tried deleting all the Network components, and restoring them, no joy. Any one with any ideas?
He's getting really shirty, and I can't think of anything else to try.
Cheers,
Will
The most obvious things that spring to mind are:
1. Is he sure the workstations actually have a live network link? Tried different patch cables and RJ45 outlets? In fact get him to try this anyway even if it is live as I've seen an instance recently where a machine had a live feed but network service was extremely erratic. Turned out to be a fault in the CAT5 cable to the RJ45 socket.
2. Is he sure the workstations are actually set to receive an IP address via DHCP and not been 'accidentally' set to a static IP address?
If he can't ping by either name or IP it would indicate a physical link problem. If you could ping by IP but not by name it would indicate a name resolution problem and not a physical link issue.

is it actaully dhcp'ing?
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
Assuming he has an IP address, can he ping the gateway?

Like a cnut, I failed to mention that the machines can ping any otehr machine on the NW, and the DC can communicate with every other machine on the network...
They are definitely on DHCP...
No packet loss on the ping?

is the PDC in the same range/subnet as the rest of the network he can ping?
Is the gateway set correctly?

Have the machines been incorrectly added to the domain, check the server manager and delete them if their names already exist.

Already tried that one, but didn't work :(
What about DNS or WINS are these configured via dhcp? or are they a manual add? Netbios interface running?
Check with 'IPCONFIG /all'
Cause without one of these, the machines arent gonna be able to resolve IP to Name.

WINS/DNS is done by DHCP, but no, it's not name resolution - they can't ping the DC by IP number

Will

That's what it looks like to me  :D

Check routing and remote access on the servers. Sometimes Win2k svr and NT4 Svr just decide that they dont like a machine, and create entries to block IP traffic from those addresses.
Are you getting RPC errors?

Martin : Righto, I'll have a looky
Vez: I'll also have a look for those on the event logs
Cheers for continued support chaps :)
