View Full Version : Insurance / test drive / new car dilemma

Hmm right, this is bugging me. Anyone any ideas on the best solution .....

Right.

I am currently driving my Swift but hoping to get the 200 soon.

You can only use no-claims on one car at a time so I'd have to choose either the 200 or the swift. If I sell the swift before picking up the 200 everything is fine as I can use Laura's car until I get the 200. If I DONT then I'd need to be insured on the 200 to bring it home and for keeping it in the garage.

Now assuming I do that, I won't be insured on the Swift. So if anyone came around to test drive it I wouldnt be able to as it wouldnt be insured. Now saying "Sorry you can't test drive it" sounds dodgy as hell and just isn't what I want to do.

What should I do?? (assuming I dont sell the Swift REAL quick).

Insure 200, no test drive for prospective Swift owners ..

Keep Swift insured but drive 200 home uninsured (no way) and leave in garage (no way).

:(

Any ideas??

i am presuming laura is your partner/wife so insure urself for 200. keep swift on drive or in garage (not on public road) when it comes to a test drive, get laura to drive it (she will be covered 3rd party on her own insurance) easy peasy

Ant:

I know :(

Tim:

Does it work like that?? Surely someone has to be insured on the car to drive it 3rd party. Laura is my g/f but she isn't insured on the swift. They wanted £400 for 2 months  She's only 3PFT on her car though, does that make a difference.

So if Im not insured on the Swift, no-one is directly.

get her to read the small print on the policy but as standard your policy will allow u to drive any car other than a hire car that is not yours on a 3rd party only basis

provided the car is on private property it does not need to be insured

I've just had a look at her policy and it states ... "Cover for driving other vehicles is cancelled" :( bugger

Thanks for the idea .... but ... next :)

only other thought is that any one who wants a test drive does all the driving themselves and u just stay in passenger seat, they will have cover 3rd party

I havent got a problem with them driving it. Assuming their insurance covers it :)

yeah thats what i was gonna suggest.

But i WOULD make sure they ARE covered Dave, under RTA law the last insurer of the vehicle would be you, and therefore if they were to have an accident and not be insured your last insurers would have to pay up - and then theyd come looking for YOU!

Cheers arry.

Right,

Best to make sure I see a policy before I let them drive it then :)

Dave

OR SOMEONE BUYS IT NOW :) ..... PLEASE???

Doesnt the swift have to have a policy on it for others to be covered 3rd party on it.

it would only have to insured elsewhere if you were to leave it on a public highway after driving it, because you dont need to - ie it will only be going from offroad to offroad, there is no need to have the vehicle covered elsewhere :)

most companies will insure your second car (ie the swift) on a temporary basis eg a month max for about £50 cos they know you're gonna sell it. if its not insured what would you do if someone nicked it etc? also make sure the test driver does actually have fully comp insurance that states he can drive the car... i mean if he has a bump he could just do a runner and you'd be shafted if you dont have any contact details... all the best.

Yeah I'll definately have to check their policy.

Any idea what company would do that cheap 1 month insurance jobbie?
