I recently bought a 1985 200SX with a blown CA20E engine. The car was in good shape, A/T, FI, loaded and I only paid $300. I ordered a used engine (one that had been shipped from Japan) and installed it (it couldn't have had too many miles on it). The new engine had a carburator and manual transmission (clutch hardly worn), so I put my old FI intake manifold on the new engine.
Everything fit just fine, harnesses, vacuum hoses were all in the same place. I changed the plugs, wires, etc. The car starts and runs great, especially on the highway, but I was getting terrible gas mileage (12 mpg, or so). I have checked everything that I can think of, including the timing and have changed the fuel filter, O2 sensor and now I am getting around 16-18 mpg. Any ideas? I know I should be getting 25-30 mpg. The car hesitates a little on acceleration, but runs great at speeds higher that 45. What have I missed? Sensors? Does it make a difference that the new engine came off of a car with M/T and carburated intake? Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.
Ryan

Could it just be running very rich? Have you had the mixture checked?

Could it have something to do with the octane rating of the fuel you are using, in Japan the petrol is much higher octane (100ron), might have to get some stuff adjusted to work with lower octane fuel...
Did you change the ECU?

Ben

No I did not change the ECU, and it doesn't seem to be running rich, but I haven't had the mixture checked. Thanks for the suggestions.
