It's lacquer :(
If you want to repolish them you will have to strip it all off (wet and dry/flap wheel) and then work your way through grades of paper to get rid of all the marks :(
You can then get it re-lacquered, or jsut polish it regularly. Lacquering will take away some of the shine but will make them easier to look after. I've gone with just plain polished, but when i get utterly fed up with polishing them once or twice a week (no, seriously!) then i'll probably plit them again and get them re-coated.

As for the tools to undo the bolts - is it a 12 sided one? If so, then what you need is a multi point socket - All my sockets were 6-sided, so i had to buy a Halfords pro one :)
Mine weren't, as alots of people told me, Torqx ones

yeah i thought i'd gone a bit far, i just saw mucho shineyness and went mental! i'll get the old wet and dry on them!

oh and si what polish did you use again???

as for the nuts, i've been told they're splines! they're like a star/torx but with a lot more edges looks almost like a rear torsion bar if uyou get what i mean i'll try and find a pic!
