View Full Version : WinMX
Anyone got any tips for using WinMx for downloading movies and suchlike?
I keep ending up with appalling download rates, which make the whole process almost pointless. It also really really slows down other thiings like this forum to a really crap rate
It's sometimes advisable to only connect to those users who have a low 'ping'. Otherwise, data transfer rates can be poor.

I use IRC for downloading movies and "suchlike" ;)
Some stuff that's helpfull: (sorry if this is a little norty)
Played with IRC to make things easier (http://www.celtasoft.nildram.co.uk/celtasoft/stuff/IRC.zip)
www.packetnews.com - this site let's you search all of the networks for what you're after.
Let's say for example that we're after Lord of the Ringpiece TT, do a search for the keywords.
Network: ADDICTZ
Channel: #xdcc
XdCC-157 3/6 44.7 #1 11x 676M The Lord Of The Rings The Two Towers INTERNAL CAM TCF CD1 tar
The info above lets us know that on the irc network ADDICTZ (irc.addictz.net), in the room #xdcc is the bot holding the loot.
Extract the zip i linked to up top to a folder on yer disk, run mirc32.exe...
Type in at the commandline type bit:
/server irc.addictz.net
then when it has connected (you will see lots of gibberish about message of the day)
/join #xdcc
If you join the right room on the right network, you should be greeted by lots of users in the right hand panel of irc.
Find the bot named on packetnews, right click on him and select "xdcc\list" from the drop down menu.
When you find which "pack number" you're after (should tell you something liek "#1 - Lord of the ring two towers, #2 lotr cd2 etc) - Select "xdcc\get" ... This will pop up a little dialog box, enter in the number you're after here.
The bot should send you a message, either telling you that you're in a queue for x amount of time, or that it is transferring the file to you.

Just another option for getting stuff, obviously it is better to use this if you're on some form of broadband with a vaguely static IP.
Sorry again if it's too norty :o

Are you using broadband? Try changing the upload and download bandwidths. Also if you have the latest winmx it should auto-find sources and so should get a good download speed. I download movies I find that if I leave them for a few hours / overnight then they are normally done :)
If you need some more help let me know what type of connection you have etc.
Cheers,
Richard
I've got broadband. Half meg tiscali line.
Usually use kazaalite but has not been too good recently.
Does the number of people trying to upload from me affect my download speed?
The IRC thing is looking a little "involved" for me so would prefer to keep using kaz or Winmx.
I have been trying to download some episodes of Initial D - the manga style drifting "cartoons"
www.kazaa.com - tonnes better than winmx.
Just make sure that when you are picking your files to download you pick one with a bandwidth over 350 and as many available users as poss :)
also, it has a "rating" system, whereby your participation level gives you a score. Leave ur pc on overnight with kazaa running, come back in the morning to find you are a guru! DL speeds then get very quick indeed :)

I have a broadband connection, I find NewsRover and a decent UseNet connection works really well. Only downside is that a GigaNews account costs about £7 per month, but I do get to d/l about 10Gb in any one month.
I use direct connect and kazaa, i find that kazaa is better for getting jpegs, indavidual songs and short mpegs, direct connect is better for getting full movies and albums, but with DC the more you have to share the better hubs you can get into and the faster better downloads. i have managed to get nearly 50gig worth of stuff in the last 3 weeks on DC!

In winmx adjust your bandwidth throttle so the outgoing bandwidth is limited to 10 000 if you have a 128k upload like on NTL. If you go much higher it starts to slow down the downloads considerably, as when you download you need to upload confirmation packets, if these have to wait to be sent due to people downloading from you then the download is held up hense poor speeds.
You can also limit incoming bandwidth so you still have plenty left for other browsing / downloads.
For anyone who needs any help with cable modems I have found an excellent site which covers everything!

See the section on how to configure winmx etc here....
