View Full Version : Speaker replacement HELP!

From other threads have read that front and back speakers are 16cm.
Thinking of buying 16cm Alpine 2-way component speakers for the front. Does the fact that they are 'component' speakers mean they come with a seperate tweeter to install where the current tweeters are at the front? Will the tweeters fit, or are they always all the same size anyway?
Thinking of doing the same for the back, or installing 7*10s.
Are Kenwood 3-way 7*10s any good? Thinking of Kenwood as Alpine etc only do 6*9, and I want as much bass as is possible without a subwoofer ands tons of cash. Quality does matter though.
If I stuck with the 16cm at the back, do I get component or not, as not sure if back has seperate tweeter?
Budget for speakers about £250
Sorry for newbie questions, but don't have much experiance with ICE and I need help!! :D
I'm using a MB Quart compo set at the rear (2 bass/2 tweeters)They are 16cm and fit right in.
The tweeters well you can place them anywhere you want,i placed mine on top of the rear shelf next to the bass speakers.
The rear is all metal so i think its gonna be pretty difficult to fit bigger speakers.
The compo set that i'm using cost me 300 euro and its very good quality.
I dont know anything about the front speakers cos i haven't replaced them yet.:(

Thanks B.L.
I did notice the back is metal, I wonder how you get bigger speakers in? Looking through the boot it doesn't seem easy.
If I took the car to Sextons or someplace, would they be able to do it? Or would that not be a good idea?! I mean, just how good are these type of places. I know I can't do it myself as I'm cr*p!! :(

When I get around to it, I'll be having 2 8inch subs sunk into the rear shelf. It can be done, just takes a bit of cutting. I've seen 2 10's in there before so 8's should be no worries.

That should give you some bass!
The thing is, I don't really want something too heavy hence consider 7*10 or 6*9.
I know if you have infinite amount of money or are great at installs yourself, anything is possible but I'm not good enough myself and only have about 250-300 squid.
What could I get then to improve quality and bass, and who would I go to to get it fitted properly without them making a fecking mess of things?

Don't really know anyone in Bristol mate, sorry. I'm just going for a decent set of 6.5" components up front and the 2x8" infinite baffle subs in the shelf. Rear speakers are only for rear passengers and I rarely have them thank god:), so I'm gong for quality and avoiding the weight that a boxed sub would give.

Thanks Dan.
Anyone have any other suggestions? Does any1 have experiance of changing backs to 6*9 or 7*10? Am prepared to travel a bit for fitting if I have to. There is a Sextons in Bristol but, like I said, I don't know what they are like.
Another stupid question, if I get 16cm components, will the tweeter that comes with the bass unit fit the tweeter slots on the pillars at the front? i.e. are tweeters all the same size?
Thanks
I've got a pair of 6x9 in the rear of my S14a they don't fit as standard but managed to make a pair of fitting bits out of MDF to mount them just under the shelf. Once I've got a bit of extra money then I'll replace them properly with something that fits the original holes.
You might find that anything bigger than 6x9 might interfere with the workings of the boot though. (if you intend fitting them to the shelf)

Tweeters are usually all the same size. However, you have a lot of flexibility for fitting the tweeters behind the pillar as there is a lot of room there. You will need to remove the original tweeter and its mounting, and then attach the new tweeter to the pillar using hot glue, or other adhesive. If you don't mind altering the car, it will be very easy to fit them to the door card near the other speaker.

i dont care what anyone says kenwood are the best speakers for the money EVER!!!
go with the 7x10's in the back and 61/2" in the front doors, the kenwood kfc-psr71p are fantastic for about £140 and come with replacement tweeters and crossovers and are a healthy 200watt.
i would have put them in mine but they just cant handle the power i'm after (going to build a 2k system!!).
Don't bother with 6x9s (or bigger) for the rear shelf cos I did.
Wish I hadn't bothered, First there's the hassle of making them fit (ring of MDF with other bits stuck to it to fit strange shape of rear shelf.
Then there's the sound. They sounded great for the money in my old car (couldn't be arsed with a sub). They produced loads more bass in the old hatchback as well. Now the metal shelf just vibrates and I have plastered it with dynomat.
Just put in some nomal speakers - only takes 10 mins as well.
I'll get a sub one day. Performance comes first though:D
