View Full Version : My Mates 7.2L V Power mini!
I dunno if any of you guys have seen my mates mini in mini world.. it was the Yellow V8 powered one. 6.2 litre chevy small block with dodge viper 6 speed box, and rear wheel drive :wack:
Anyway.. Nathan was only able to run a 11.2 sec quarter which he was not happy about.. so out came the engine and was sold.. then time to build a new one! all steel internals.. 15k's worth of V8 built from a bare block! Auto stooling auto gearbox.. this baby is gonna fly!!! some pics :D
we just trial fitted the engine to check for exhaust manifold clearances :wack: its coming back out to be dyno'd and should be 600bhp out of the box! Oh and i forgot to add.. one of the other reasons the engine was changed was because the nutter is using 100bhp progressive nitrous boost ;)
Lunatic :wack: :notworthy

Thats mental :notworthy
6.2ltr in a mini and he was only doing 11's ??? :wack:
Either he was wheel spining for the 11 seconds or it was a very lazy engine.
This new one does look awesom though :smitten:

Earth calling moon unit 5!!!!
Top work
stripped mini shell with engine in the front will mean he will be running a new pair of rear rubbers every run!!! the rear end will only come in at 250-300kg!! you need a fat man in the boot!
nice to see that people are still doing nut case minis.
man i miss mine.
wowtastic:cool: enough to cause a mini tornado
The thing I like about the SXOC is that nobody asks "why?".
I'd love to do something like this some day, my space framed S13 just doesn't cut the mustard.:)

We definitely need some video of that car when it's up and running  :notworthy

Mental. I'd love to see how the bodywork at the front fits round that :wack:
I imagine it has lost some of the mini's handling 'charm' though :wack: and don't try telling me that block weighs the same as an a series :D

Just kidding, wonder how it would drift....:)

My guess is crap :wack: I suspect the SWB may make it a tad, err, twitchy :D
Nice to see you guys like it ;o)
BTW the car is road legal too.. he is planning to go to the mini showdown in avon park in summer.. i think i will take my car too... also will be going to guildford cruise in it when its ready :wack:
He ran against a 700bhp skyline last year at the pod, with the 6.2 and and the skyline almost looked like it was standing still. I have a vid on my Phone (nokia n80) if anyone knows how to get it on here let me know and maybe i could mail the file to you.
He is running wrinkle wall tyres.. you would be surprised how this thing launches! But it does like letting go at 126mph in 4th too.. like it did on one of his runs at santa pod :wack:
I think it would drift VERY well :D
another pic of it in one piece.. (stolen form miniworld site)

wouldnt it have been better to put the engine in the back?
My guess is crap :wack: I suspect the SWB may make it a tad, err, twitchy :D
the handling is actually very good (if u know what ur doing with the throttle), it was all setup by andy robinson racing, some special way of balancing the car.. called theretical centre line point or something.. damn i can't remember!! Oh and the engine is solid mounted :wack:

Wheel base might be a little short for drifting. Not that I have a clue about drifting! :wack: LOL!
Excellent looking motor, nice tubular work as well. Did he do all that himself? If so, :notworthy
Thats nuts, but I like... high five:thumbs:
yep all done by himself.. he built it from the floor up. He was gonna get the chassis built, he got quoted 5k and there was a 2 yr waiting list.. so he did some R&D, got some CSD tubing and got the mig out :wack: i have pics of the car from when it was nothing til now.. a lot of work has gone into it! about 3 yrs to get it where is is now.

a little????
its pretty short for a driftcar;)
its absolutely a mental machine though!
The Gearbox is a FB Performance Trans Brake 4 speed overdrive jobbie.. ford casing and gm bell housing..
It has variable stool speed control so zero slippage during changes and a 10" anti ballonning torque controller.. and its all in steel rated at 850 BHP!!
Your gonna love this part.. the trans brake hold 1st and reverse in gear together at the line.. and hold the transmission at the set RPM (3000rpm) so your foot is to the floor and the engine is at full revs but transmission at 3000k so then u press the red button.. and bang reverse is released.. and u go from 3k to full chat in a very small amount of time :wack:

POint taken Rog, I am just the translater.. My mate is the man with the REAL knowledge about yank motors :wack:
I know he has a MSD for definite, and he defo can adjust stall speed.

holy crap! thats awesome! mini= awesome V8= best motors on the planet wawawoowah!:notworthy
Just a question, what material is used for the chassis work? ive been having an argument with my uni project supervisor about using 4130 (he says it doesnt weld properly) and suggests using AISI1020 but i found an SAE paper looking at the 2 and said to use 4130
i am not too sure to be honest.. it is CDS Cold Drawn Steel??? but i gather 4130 etc would be diff grades of CDS?

I know he has a MSD for definite, and he defo can adjust stall speed.
The MSD will be an ignition unit, using this he can adjust the startline (transbrake) RPM and the upper RPM limit. This is purely related to the engine though, and it is impossible to adjust the stall speed of the torque converter without opening it and changing the stator.

CDS is indeed cold-drawn seamless tubing, manufactured from mild steel. It's strong and durable, but relatively heavy. 4130 is chromoly, and probably the most perfect material for chassis and roll cage fabrication. Every drag car in the world capable of running quicker than 7.5 seconds is constructed from 4130, including the 8000+bhp nitro cars. It's both stronger and lighter than CDS, although around 20% more in price. As for welding, yeah MIG welding isn't really suitable, but with a TIG there's nothing to it, I'm not really sure why your supervisor has the opinion he does?

I'm sure Mr Wikstrom and Mr Fagerstrom would give it a run for it's money lol!
OK so the mini last year had a 6.2L chevy small block (built from scratch by Nathan) with 6 speed dodge viper box. It ran a 11.1 sec quarter then ran into trouble.. nathan was not having this so he ripped it all out and built a fresh lump (race breed) 7.2L this time, Dart block and Brodix heads with FB performance Trans Brake, Auto stooling box. This sh!t is something else..
So we did an all nighter to get the mini running wknd before last and it was taken on the London to Brighton Mini run on sunday.. check it out!

The thing I like about the SXOC is that nobody asks "why?"
If you have to ask, isn't the reason "because he can" enough? It is for me!
Mental car! :notworthy
