I was wondering if anyone's stuck bigger rubber on the existing rims. For instance Yoko AVS Sport 225/50/ZR16 92W fit on 6.5 inch rims and have exactly the same radius as the standard tyres. Not sure what this would look like though.

Std. wheels are 15" so those tyres wont fit. sorry to be pedantic - most likely a typo...

I think 205/55s are as wide as you want to go on a 6.5" rim. Any wider and they'll be all over the place on cornering.

I've got 205/60/15's on my 200 and they handle a lot better than the standard 195/60's....a bit close to the front sruts though.the only prob I have is the speedo is slightly out because of the rolling radius being bigger,it shows 100mph.....doing 105!!!

Got 205/55s on my standard rims, heaps better than the standard size. Using BF Goodrich on the back. Nice tyre and not too expensive.
I know a guy who says he's got 225/50s but this seems a touch big for the standard wheel.

Sorry guys, should have mentioned I'm talking S14 here. The standard rims are 6.5 by 16 inch.

On the subject of tyres my rears are starting to be past their best. I've been quoted £150 per tyre to replace the standard Yokos (with a 3 week wait 'cos apparently there aren't any in the country!!!!!!!!).

Anyone suggest a suitable alternative (preferably on that won't banckrupt me)

Jeez, I begrudge paying over 80quid a throw for 17's. I only got 15's at the minute (on some dodgy cheapo brand)

150 quid a tyre is outragous, they all slide given enough right foot. Im gonna make velcro tyres and put strips on corners and at lights. Problem solved.

I've got Avon ZZ1's on my back wheels. Bloke in shop claims they're as good as the Bridgestone Pole Positions (potenzas) - certainly seem to have the same tread pattern. Cost me £150 for 2 (standard S14 wheels), & they seem to be grippy enuff. (As long as they're more hard-wearing than the Bridgestones, I'll be happy!)

Chimp,

When I bought my S14, the garage "kindly" replace the rear tyres for me. GREAT, me thinks!! Saved me a couple of hundred quid or so......

Last December, the car "decided"; with very littel provocation I hasten to add, to spin through all 360 degrees whilst attempting to "drive" round a relatively easy corner at 40mph!!!! Narrowly missed a lamp post, and I mean NARROWLY and slide down a grass embankment. The garage had put some cr4ppy GT Radials on the rear which very so bloody hard, I reckon you run them for a decade and still have tread.... But no grip or traction!!

Since that little episode, I have replaced all the tyres with Bridgestone S02PPP's and have not once spun the rears even in torential rain, and caining it too!!

I got 205/55/ZR16's from my local STS (Stapletons) are £125 a tyre and £15 for tyre insurance. Kwik fit knock out the SO2PPP's (205/50/ZR16 was looking for lotus elise) at a staggering £170 per tyre...

And the moral of this rant is: (Drawing sword and standing near Castle Greyskull)

I now don't skimp on tyres (brakes or insurance) and I always shop around.

John.

PS Am just about to dismantle my car's doors to try and fit these goddamn speakers!!!
