What tires would people reccommend for track use?

Haven't got mine on a track yet but I think the Stevenage boys had good fun on rally slicks:

I used Toyo R888s at Castle Coombe on Friday. I found them to be awesome, loads of grip and they felt progressive. However, I get them in 195 50 15 (for an MX5) and they're £70ish each. They're significantly more for bigger wheels.

Whats your budget and how long do you want them to last?
Are you looking for ultimate grip?
What size?

Dunlops - DJ01 / DZ02G are awesome
Rally slicks are cheap and bags of grip.
RS2 Hankooks are very good for the money.
Kumho MX can double as an excellent summer tyre.
A048's are somewhere above R888 and below dunlops it seems

Am looking for good grip and budget 100 quid a corner, something htat lasts a longish time. i ahve the standard 16 inch rims and also some 18 inch kei rims so whichever is cheaper

cheers for the link mango bob, at the moment on my 16's i am running 205, 55,16's. Would te 205, 50,16's be okay to use on the standard s14 alloys?

205's! you won't see much of all the horsepower you've got getting to the ground fella! ;) you need 235+

Nah, if youre driving on good quality semislicks its amazing how much more traction you get (suspension/camber needs to be right too though)
I get great traction now (dry) on 888's with 225/16 and over 400bhp (nismo s-tune suspension),
used to wheelspin a lot on 245 (expensive) road tyres and much less power.

Thats what I run on the rear of my car as first choice. Quite difficult to get hold of though, my local tyre place can get them but at some delay. I remember having a chat to one of the Kuhmo reps at Autosport and even he said he had trouble getting them :( Apparently not a wise choice for the front of the car though (according to the rep, I havent tried it myself!)

Utterly crap in the rain too :p

they are on the EARS motorsport site, and for 225 fr 245 rr on 17s work out a t only just over £300 for the set... I may have to get some of them and give them a try... not quite as good as R888s for ultimate grip I'd suspect, but are a lot cheaper so I'll have to see how they wear :)

Anyone tried Kumho V70A's? They seem to be be the next step up from MX's (more track style), not too sure if they are road legal though? You can choose compound though

Would have MX's but they don't come in the size I want :(

Also how many miles do you get out of R888's with decent camber etc? I know you get about 5k out of them on an elsie with plenty of trackwork but wondered about on an sx.

One more thing do Falken do a track tire?

Cheers lads,

Dunc.

Kumho V70A's seem to get very very good reviews, I'd still have dunlops over anything else.

i use V70as:thumbs:
they are road legal but MSA List 1B so check with your championship regs that you can run 1Bs (essentially track based barely road legal tyres).
as you say V70s are in three compounds, i use the soft for sprints and hillclimbs. Nothing else is as soft or sticky, period. Any other 1Bs are only starting to get warm by the end of a sprint whereas teh softs are sticky as hell.
I know a lot of teh circuit boys use the mediums on radicals and one amek series (porsche, BMW etc etc). One of teh guys at demon Tweeks runs them on his ciruit car and reckons they are good.

as for mileage out of soft compound V70As, expect between 40 and 80 miles only:eek:

Not that suitable for a road tyre then really? :wack:

Anyone know the answer to this question or is the 452 (?) as hardcore as it gets?

Cheers,

Thats a bit shit, struggling a bit to get a tyre to do me on track that won't waste away when I use it on the road too.

Thats coz track tyres are ment to be used on track and road tyres on the road :wack:

Yeah I know but something like Kumho MX would have been ideal but they don't do the right profile for me :p

I don't mind taking a big hit on tyre durability but 80 miles to a set is a bit of a piss take :D

Do R-S2s come in the right size for you? There were good on the track and seem to managed the heavy rain on the way home from brands.

i wasnt suggesting the softs would be any good for you guys, remember the soft compound is THE softest 1B out there (sprints/hillclimbs only), their mediums and hards arent any where near as bad. From what i remember the medium V70As on a BMW 3 series or 944 porker (similar weights to 200s i guess) are fine for 20 lap races and last half a season on track so they may well be worth a shot. Tweeks will give you an idea.
in Time Attack its a rolling start isnt it (i dont know the format)? that should give you chance to warm a medium compound enough in the preceeding lap(s).

Yak
16-04-2007, 13:46
Yeah its a rolling start for TA so a lap to get tyres up to temp. I was finding getting the tyres up to temp not much of a problem (probably coz I kept forgetting they would be cold and ended up doing a bit of dori out of the pits :wack: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-59OQoHKHE ).
SM on the other had was struggling to get heat into his but may be thats the diffrence between 205 ane 235 rubber?

They do indeed come in the right profile but hadn't heard of these so didn't know if they would be any good? What are they like compaired to other tyres Yak like KU31's for example?

On friday there I used RB5's with rare hard compound and they heated up easily enough which pleasantly surprised me, I've decided to use a different rim size however so getting rid of these if you're interested yak? They are a grippy tyre and have hardly seen any use, must have only used about 2mm of tread at most out of about 8mm (I'm going to measure tread when I find calipers). Only after £35 each if you're interested Yak?

Dunc :)

could be, also pressures, corner weights and spring rates and dampers too.
i agree rears are dead esy to get warm :D but i struggle with the fronts. I often drive from the paddock road with my left foot on the brakes, just lightly, which helps to get a bit of heat into the discs which then heatsoaks into the wheel rim and then the air in the tyre. maybe a bit of drag braking on ya warm up lap and plenty of steering wheel wiggling:thumbs:
