View Full Version : Connecting laptop to mobile phone for internet
I have recently acquired a laptop computer and was wondering if it is possible to connect to the Internet with it via my mobile phone? I’m pretty sure I can, but I have no idea what sort of connecting wire I need or whether any software is needed? The hole in the laptop is for the see thru squarish type connector (see how technical I am :D )
Trouble is I know so little I can’t even search on the net for it, as I don’t really know what I’m looking for! :o
“wire for laptop to mobile phone” doesn’t come up with many useful results
Can any of you knowledgeable IT type folks help me, even if it’s to tell me what I should search for on the net :)

Mate don't bother unless u are based in japan and can use NTTDocmo IMODE, I think the the UK use a mobile to connect to the internet you will get a massive 14.4 connection speed?
Si :)
Does that mean it's really slow?

Do you use a normal modem at home ie. not broadband. In comparison a 56k modem is like grease lighting!
Si :)
I don't have broadband :( (Tho may get it when I move :) )
My computer at home is incredibly old and slow. This laptop is miles faster when connected to the land line than my normal PC. Would using a mobile probably make the laptop even slower than my PC, cuz that's about as slow as I can handle!
Cheers for your help m8 :)
Veeeeery veeeeery slooooow (normal landline modem connection is 56k, compared to 14.4)
Its 9.6kbps which is appalling - even when you disable all the graphics
EG - the front page of the forum, with graphics disabled takes approx 5 minutes to open fully.
Oh, and you'll pay 35p per minute for the connection as mobile operators don't recognise freephone/local/low cost numbers.
Blimey that is slow! Thanks for the help guys, I imagined that technology had advanced further than that. :(
What are you IT lot doing!? Stop mucking about and make this stuff better and faster ;) :D

You can get around 12 if it's a communicator thingy but that is still sh*te slow. :( Did you know iMOde is a 2mg perminate connection phone. Shame its a close network, would be better that G3 ( well when it arrives )
Si :)
I use GPRS with my laptop - its about the same speed at a 56k modem and works quite well. You only pay for the amount of data you download and no the duration of the connection. No idea how much it cost though, I get it free through work.
3G is cool - seen streaming video using it. Trouble is that the handset we have only lasts for about 10 mins on the std battery and the whole thing gets red hot...

Jez have you ever looked into NTTDocmo iMode. Did some work with NEC awhile ago on these phones, they are amazing, kind of makes 3G or 2.5G what ever it's called know look quite out of date and that was 18 months ago. The phones have a preminate 2mg connection stream, they were amazing for video calls.
Si :)
Orange supports 28.8 speeds with some of the newer phones

No not seen any of that stuff.
Wi-fi is pretty good, obviously only very local coverage though.
A few people I know tried to start a company that was going to offer 500k bytes/s download using DAB. They were all set but then the people funding them pulled out at the last minute :(
erm... guys...
if you have a sim card with free WAP like i do, you can create a net connection on ur laptop using the WAP dial up number and user/pass, then connect via infrared and dial up... it may be only 9.6kbps, but when u have your laptop with you it makes an excellent alternative to listening in lectures when i can browse sxoc.com for free :) also good on the train, chatting on msn etc...
all for free if you have a genie sim card with free WAP minutes :D
its ideal
cheers
Doug
you can get 28.8 if you have a Nokia 6210 :)
(so the blurb says, I've not tried it)
Doug, could you explain that infrared/WAP thingy in more detail. I get free WAP (yep, Genie) on my 7110 and my mate has a laptop (with infrared) - could be useful. :)
Hi,
basically what u have to do is set up an internet connection on your pc
call it genie or something...
then when it asks for the phone number to dial to connect, put 915000
next, in the username box put geniewap
and in password put geniewap
that should set you up a dialup connection
then on your phone u have to enable infrared, then put it near the infra red port of your laptop
in the bottom right of ur screen on ur lappers a box should come up sayin "another computer is nearby"
ignore that.. thats just telling u that u have established a connection with ur phone
what you then do is go and find ur genie dial up icon, im not sure what version of windows or linux u r running, but u should be able to find it !!
then just double click and connect to it... should be that simple...
if it gives an error message of NO DIAL TONE, go to the properties of your dial up connection, and make sure you have set the modem used to be your phone, and not the one already in the laptop..thats about it... any other trouble just drop me an email
cheers
Doug
Cheers Doug...will give that a wizz!
Ta!
:)
