View Full Version : What's the daftest road stunt you've ever attempted?

How's about towing a crash damaged Ford Capri that's been sat in a yard for 3 years that has no lights, siezed brakes and a flat battery using a £5 tow rope for 15 miles at 20 mph on fast main roads in the dark and thick fog?

Oh yeah and my mate being towed in the Capri nad no insurance, and the car had no MOT and tax that ran out in 11/99

It got even dafter when the tow rope snapped (like I said, £5) and my mate decided to try to drive the car the rest of the way - we had the engine running to operate the brake servo; there was no way I was towing him with hardly any brakes. Oh yeah, did I mention the car had an almost totally worn out clutch, and only 1st, 2nd and 5th gears? :D

Got to a T-junction on a steep hill, I was in front to try and hide the fact that the car had no front lights, bumper or grille. I had to slow down for the junction - too much traffic. My mate tried to stay in 2nd (the 'box in the Capri needed both hands to change gear), the clutch slipped, he managed to get it down into 1st and then stalled. Battery totally dead. No lights (remember it's dark and foggy).

OK no problem, go back to jump start him. My car can't give enough current to turn over the big ol' V6, so I rev it to get the alternator to push out more power - then a flash and smoke. The jump leads have melted.

So we manage to make do with what's left of the tow rope and at 10 miles an hour (to give him time to stop using the handbrake, no servo assistance). I tow him up the rest of the hill and onto the flat. Now we have to go down the other side of the hill into Bath which is *very* steep. There's no way I can go in front.

So we (ingeniously, in my opinion) rig it up like he's towing me, so I can use my brakes to slow us both going down the hill. Works, what a relief. Then we swap back and I tow him up the last hill to his house whilst whistling the tune from the Great Escape :D

And all without being spotted by the cops (and trust me, we were very conspicuous). God knows what kind of trouble we would have been in!

Hmm...ones that spring to mind:

60mph handbrake turn across a 10 foot grass central reservation (it worked!)

Bonnet opening into the windscreen at 90mph while passing an HGV, behind someone else and with a rover tailgating me.

800km through desert and forgot sunglasses (acute migranes and throwing up for 2 days afterwards)

towing a 1966 Vauxhall Victor through the Back roads from clacton to colchester with no brakes other than the handbrake, a windscreen that hadnt been cleaned in 6 years (sitting in an old workshop), no lights and brakes being seized - hmmmmmm :D.

To make matters worse, it was about 7pm so getting dark!

To make matters worse still, the guy towing me was a complete loon! He eventually got locked up for dangerous driving whilst under the influence of drugs - decided to take him mum's Rover Kensington (METRO!) out for a spin at top whack through Colchester town centre, then foned the police himself and told him that he was driving dangerously and couldnt help himself!! They chased him all the way from Colchester to Jaywick lane before he pulled over and kicked a copper in the knackers.......

Yes, i was very very scared:o

Good idea in theory going down one of the bath hills behind your mate, but per-chance, what would have happened if the tow rope broke again! Bye Bye! At least the centre of bath would have stopped him!:p

I towed a mate home from trowbrige after he crashed his 306, dark, no lights (not they didnt work, they were no longer attached!) little steering etc, its only about 8 miles, but felt foolish at the time!

I was towed in a Metro (crappy A-series type) behind a Landrover, and a short piece of rope.

The metro was a non-runner, 2 tyres were nearly flat, and 2 WERE flat. Not to worry says the mechanic doing the towing - they are run-flat Michelins

So little braking, and turning the steering wheel only seemed to send vague hints as to any change of direction.

Then the rope errr came off at a roundabout and the guy towing didn't even realise til he had cleared the roundabout

My mate actually got pulled by the plod while towing (excuse pun :D ).

He was collecting a project Midget from my garage and going 25 miles! - they set off with him sat in a barely rolling midget shell - no roof, windscreen or doors :) and the seat wasn't bolted in, and no seatbelt :)

Plod gave them a right bollokcing, told them to turn around, and try again when they had the right equipment :D

Cheers, Phil

One of my friends once ran out of petrol and had his friends push his car 3 miles at night (no money for petrol). On getting the car home his father's first question was "why didn't you use the can of petrol that's in the boot".

As for me, when 17 I decided to find out what happened when you pulled the handbrake on whilst travelling downhill on a snowcovering slope. After spinning through 540 degrees, decided never to do it again. Just aswell I'd made sure there were no other cars around.

At the age of nineteen I wrote off my car whilst chasing a police patrol car.
Still, that was a LONG time ago. Haven't had an accident in 16 years now.

My mate and me took his dads Volvo out for a spin when we were 14. We were also pissed at the time and it was the most stupid thing I've ever done.
We got caught becasue without realising it we ran over his cat as we pulled back into his drive.:(

Still have nightmares about it now.

Also,
Tried towing a big mahindra jeep with my mums old astra estate (1.6) ahhh, the smell of burning clutch in the morning.:D

Not actually as dangerous as it sounds - the brakes on the Capri were half siezed anyway, the handbrake was enough to stop the car over a reasonable distance, and we were doing no more than 5mph anyway.

I just didn't trust him not to crash into the back of my S13 :D

1) Unused & decommissioned A-Road alongside the A23/M23 at Pease Pottage. 2ft deep hardpacked snow, and 1 x Carlton GSi3000 plus my co-driver.

Hours of fun from 10pm - 2am

Even funnier when Plod showed up in their T5 and demanded a go!!!! Copper was nearly wetting himself laughing. Sheer Madness.

2) Attempting the Crag-ny-barr (spelling?) Humpback bridge on the Isle of Man at 126 (flat in top) in the rally Manta. Broke both front coils 20 odd miles before the next service halt on the most demanding tarmac rally in the British Isles. Doh!!

3) 181mph on the M23 behind the wheel of my mates derestricted M5. Aiiiiieeeee!!!!

4) Firing a fireworks rocket from a piece of drainpipe whilst standing with torso, head and shoulders out the sunroof of my cousins RS2000 custom. Aiming said firework at our mates Mini. All this whilst tearing round Horshams one way system. Swiftly developed into a mobile firework fight.

I'm organising a rolling road day in at Motorvation in Dorking on the 3rd March. Assuming Motorvation will agree to it. I'm taking the Merc Cossie though.

The only meet planned in this area is when the warm weather comes, we're all off to Mambastu's place in Horley to have a go on his motorbike.

Ah yes...how could I forget. some more majorly insane moments:

Thrash around forestry tracks in Escort with a few other cars late at night. Car so covered with mud from the Mk2 Escort in front that the whole front was covered in 1/2 inch of mud and passenger was directing me by standing up through the sun roof.

40mph down a slippery curving dirt track with a paggenger as a hood ornament.

Off road on friends farm at night. Rabbit shooting on meddows. Drive around rally style-ee until rabbit is in headlights. One friend standing up through sunroof with shotgun and one through passenger window. Drive at rabbit to keep it lit (swerving as rabbit zigzags) and hope friend shoots rabbit before it gets too close.

And the most insane thing I've ever done:

Two cars side by side with passenger climbing between the two cars.

This is why I no longer drive like a madman... I have no need to :D

About 60 MPH on snow covered road over moors in an old Rover 2000TC. Knew that if I stamped on the breaks the car just had to carry on in a strieght line - spun about 5 times swerved onto oposite side of road into oncoming trafic, back onto right side of road, hit high kirb and smashed nearside suspension!:o I was only 18 at the time and I didn't hit any other cars!

I used to have a (DONT LAUGH) Renault Clio, I was belting down a windy country lane and rolled it into a hedge. A few cars arrived from the other direction and as they couldnt get past, 3 or 4 blokes helped me push it back down onto its wheels and into the nearest layby. I said i was fine and when they dissapeared i started it and drove it home. No headlights, No Windows, Smashed up windscreen and roof about 6 inches lower than normal:D .

ummm, Vauxhall Chevette 2ltr 16V Conversion with welded up rear Diff, at the first sign of snow we took it out, overtook a snowplough sideways on the tockholes road, the Drivers face was hilarious... um autotesting a *cough* Yugo 45, was trying to make up time by going too fast and went into a load of Brick Filled Oil Drums at about 50, left bits of the bloody thing all over the place, with ex-boss who thaught he was a hard man and I wouldn't scare him in my car, took him to Manchester in the old Beemer, again over the tockholes road, am pleased to say that he had to get out and throw up before we got to Bolton :D

my three dumbest moments?

1. once thinking that my pulsar could knock down lamposts and be good to go! using my wooley hat for a helmet :D

2. getaway in London, again using wooly helmet

3. tandem car surfin - which involves both driver and passenger getting on the roof whilst doing high speeds, requires the driver to steer with thier foot. lets just say we would have got busted for speeding too.....

...on the M1. :D lol, remember your wooly helmets :D

mittomatto - aka - surf bum :D

using driftaholics PC cus i'm at his place about to go to Japan. whoops! lol, JAPAN! YEAY!

The silliest thing i ever did??
climbing out the roof of my 1.6 fiesta, whilst driving, laying on the roof and steering by putting my arm through the open side window. Problem arose when had to brake, so very hastily climbed back in head first.
oh to be 17 again!!
And i wondered why my insurance was high when i was young!!

How's about:

Clinging to the roof rack of a 1982 SIII Land Rover doing 50mph down a country lane with low hanging branches whipping over my head

Thankfully this experience was made much more pleasurable by the extremely gorgeous girl sitting behind me hanging on for dear life to me :D :D :D
