View Full Version : Project RB25 - on a budget!
I'm guessing it's about time I put this in here.
Ever since breaking up my S14 i've been missing my 200. No matter what I've bought since (TVR Chimaera, Supercharged Lotus Elise, 360bhp Evo 4, Audi S4) they just don't seem to have what the 200 had.
Since i've bought a house I simply can't afford to go throwing money at the car like I did with my 14.
I decided on the an S13 this time around simply becasue it was cheaper and I wanted something different rather than doing another S14.
The opertunity came along to buy a really clean L reg car for £800 so I snapped it up . . .
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/DSCF3637.jpg
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/exhaust005.jpg
It was a little while before I could fine the right doner car. I see people paying big money for the RB25 engine from breakers without being able to hear the running etc. But I knew that if I waited long enough the right one would come along.
After keeping an eye on EBay for a while along came this :
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/48_1.jpg
The guy wanted £1700 for it but I thought i'd be cheeky and offer him £1000 for it. After 3 weeks of people messing him about he accepted.
So me and Jezz_S13 set out on a road trip in his 520i touring and a trailer :
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/phone001.jpg
It was a long old day as I live in Swansea and the car was in Bradford but £90 in petrol later we had her home!
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/DSCF3632.jpg
As this car was going to get in my way I got on with stripping it straight away. As I worked my way through the car I found some nice suprises like a cat back system, Mines ECU, HKS induction kit and a set of lowering springs.
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/exhaust004.jpg
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/exhaust003.jpg
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/exhaust002.jpg
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/exhaust001.jpg
After selling all I could off the car (including the bit listed above) I managed to get the cost of the car back! So I now have an RB25 engine, gearbox, engine loom, rear hubs and all the brakes for free!
The next job was to start stripping the S13. She came apart real quick, going from a full car to this in the space of a few hours :
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/s13017.jpg
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/s13014.jpg

http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/s13030.jpg
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/s13028.jpg
Nick J (Vidal Baboon) got straight on with stripping the interior.
So far i've sourced an S15 helical LSD. This was sent upto a mate who used to do all the transmission work for Prodrive along with the R33 diff and the S13. So I now have an S13 casing, S15 internals with the R33 final drive to get the gearing right.
I've also managed to get my hands on a Nismo twin plate clutch and flywheel assembly from an R32 GTR, a tubular manifold, 'flyin' downpipe, GT3071R turbo, Apexi Power FC and a pair of Honda Civic Type R front seats.
The skyline front subframe and oS13 rear subframe and front lower arms are currently in being bead blasted and powercoated. Once that is done I can start building the back end back up with the diff, R33 5 stud hubs and twin pot rear brakes, solid bushes and adjustable toe and camber arms.

This looks VERY PROMISING and UBER Coolio!
Also managed to obtain a free set of Nismo LM-GT split rims. Imported an R33 GTS-T for a mate but explained that the car would be coming with standard wheels, he was happy enough as he wants to put 18's on it anyway!

http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/167687_R_Large.jpg
The plan is to get the engine out and the engine bay stitch welded over the next two weeks. I've got a week off for easter so i'm hoping to get 'Uber Buff' (some of you may know him as Buffy) over the lockup for a few days to give me a hand getting the motor fitted and running!
Big thanks to Nick J, Jezz_S13 and CJ for thier help so far.

Which GT3071R do you have mate?
The "real" one with 60mm turbine, or a WGted one (56.8mm turbine).

It's the internally WGted one but it's been 'tinkered with' by a mate who specs the turbo's for the Prodrive rally cars. It should give full boost nice and early which is what i'm after as the engine still has standard internals.
As for the pics - i've hosted them on my Yahoo space - maybe that's why it's all gone a little Pete Tong?? Iill have to register myself a Photobucket account or something.
sounds like a fantastic project, cant wait to see it with pictures!

Now had a proper read and a look at the pics, looking good so far.
I can't believe that you scored that R33 for a grand!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The owner was stupid to crash it but even thicker not to realise that he could get more for parts. Still it's your win on that one:thumbs:

Im also available for weddings, graduations and Bar Mitzvah celebrations, Hazlehof ;)
Be good to know what the mines ecu was mapped for.
Good luck, you'll love it.
I have a 3076R if you want to use that. Im going to put a TD06 25G on mine.
Nice project, watching with interest :)

I dunno what it was mapped for but it only had stage one mods and the turbo is standard as far as i'm aware. Also with this being a late Spec 1 it has a shocking turbo, ceramic exhaust wheel and NYLON INLET WHEEL! How about that for something to get stuck in your engine! lol.
I'm going with the 3071R that I have for a min simply because I don't want to kill the standard internals - i'd rather re-build it when i'm ready! lol.
Also the budget is £5000 - which i'm well on for at the mo.
What ou gonna do for front hubs?
Rear 's gonna be sky but front?
xcuse my english :D me sa Dutchy
what a class project, keeps us updated!

I'll update this some more tomorrow!

thnxz, another question: How about the dails? Does the S13 understand the jibberish the RB is sending? Or do you use a converter? And how does the converter work with abs and other stuff. (read some stuff @skylinowners about hicas and abs going mental with a converter, steering to much, not unlocking brakes etc)
if your gonna talk/write about it when you get to it i'll be ssssttt for now :D
Great project, reading with a load of respect as it's a road i would like to walk in the future.
my speedo reads half speed. You can get units made up to sort it out.
I'm using my AEM ecu to fix it.

180SX/Silvia 180 km/h speedo, tweak the screw on the back, 180mph speedo conversion and it reads right :D

All fun and stuf but i'm on the mainland, so i kinda need the km/h to be good :D Well lots of tweaking i guess....
I like the look of this a lot.

Good progress, all the best with the project:thumbs:
Hi guys,
just a quick update. Been quite busy lately so the cars not come on quite as quick as i'd have liked.
Got the engine and box out in an evening so I could get on with cleaning all the seam sealer from the engine bay ready for stitch welding.
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/22-2.jpg
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/22-1.jpg
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/22.jpg
Once that was done my mate Dave from Retro Inc. came around with his welder and stitch welded it up will sorting out the minor rust issues.
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/stich001.jpg
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/stich002.jpg
I also removed the brackets for the airbox and the battery tray as they'll no longer be needed.
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/stich003.jpg
It was easier to chop the battery tray out and weld in a fresh piece cos trying to get the old one out was a right pig!
While that was being done I dropped the front and rear subframes along with the lower arms around to a local company called Clarke Coatings so they could be sand blasted and powder coated.
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/stich004.jpg
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/stich005.jpg
Quite a nice job and for £100 all in I was well pleased with the price.
Dropped the RB25 and S13 looms off to Super Buff (Buffy) so he can work his magic with them ready for the engine fitting next week!
Will get on with cleaning and painting the engine bay later this week and will hopefully build up the subframes once my bushes turn up from Apex Performance.
Nice work mate!
Your mate can weld nicely, wish I had skills like that:nod:
Good luck with the rest of the build.:D Oh, and where are your protective goggles, tut tut.:whip: :D :D :ghey: :ghey:
It's o.k - I wear protective contact lenses . . .
Dunno how much power you're wanting to go for Phill, but if I were you I'd use an R33 diff rather than that S13 one - I think my gearing is a bit long as it is, it'd be even worse if I still had the S13 diff! :smash:
Jezz_S13
03-04-2007, 20:40
It's an S15 diff with R33 gearing, in an S13 casing. :D
It's an S15 diff with R33 gearing, in an S13 casing. :D
That is fooking cool :D
Carefully thought out. And after collecting that S15 weekend before last I can vouch for the S15 helical LSD for being a really nice affordable 'fast road' diff - nice and usable and not to snatchy etc. I felt safe putting the power down coming out of corners . . .
arent helical LSD's prone to breaking under high torque? or am I mistaken?
We'll soon find out I guess! It's the first i've heard of it though . . .
Any reason for stitching rather than completely welding the seams?
Keep on the good work/pic's/posts, it's gonna be a nice manual :notworthy

If you complete weld all the seams, they are more rpone to breaking/ cracking as there is no flex available to them
Where as if you leave a little space in between the chassis can flex a little bit :)

They were both built up by a guy who used to do the transmission work for Prodrive.

Got my work cut out now though - it's amazing how many little jobs you forget!
Hopefully my bushes will turn up today and I can get the back end together so I can get some measurments for the prop and get that knocked up.
Also need to order a new manifold gasket from Nissan so I can get the tubular one fitted along with the new turbo, can start playing with getting the exhaust fitting etc.
Then i'll be onto the inlet side so I can get the intercooler all plumbed in etc.

I know its probably a silly thing to ask on the grand scale of things, but are you gonna clean them cam covers up? They're letting down all that lovely engine bay work :D
Top work so far
Gonna get it running as it is then i'll be pulling them off and giving them a coat of paint along with a few other bits. Got a set of cam's to go in and adjustable exhaust pulley.

any idea what sort of power you looking for mate,
im really interested in this as its something id love to do in the future,
ive had a kinda vision of a rb25, apex comfy coilovers and a set of 18s and fully poly bushed, keeping all the aircon etc etc just to make a really reliable and drivable yet still fast car,
I'd like over 400 . . . initially.

What a bloody cool project! I love the way you painted the engine bay etc without just shoving that lovely engine in which must have been tempting just to get it in there asap!!

Will it suffer much from understeer as i have heard thats a problem when you do this swap????
In a word no.
I know I am not the only person with an rb s13 who thinks that the car actually drives better after the change. The front feels much more planted as if somehow the extra weight gives more traction?
I know thats a crap explanation, but I'm not a scientist.....
Thinking of it, I think the only people who ever say that it understeers have never driven one and certainly dont drive one all the time.

I only ever got udersteer from the S13 when using the CA on std suspension and tyres... was hard to get understeer after changing to aftermarket parts.
As for the RB swap giving understeer!... no chance!... it actually eliminates 90% of the front ends tendancy to want to carry on in a straight line, and the suspension feels much more smooth over bumps too... great swap.

have a good one:hurl:
O.k people we are way over due for an update. Just been so busy with other things I've simply not had time to get on with the project page. The car has come on some what recently though . . .
Built the rear bed up with the S13 cased S15 helical LSD, Whiteline ARB, solid bushes, adjustable camber, toe and traction arms complete with the Skyline rear set-up and braided hoses. The lower arms also had uprated bushes pressed into them.
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/20052007005.jpg
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/20052007007.jpg
Also fitted some carbon metallic Endless pads all round.
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/20052007016.jpg
Stripped the inlet manifold off ready to fit my 'GReddy' one. Spent two hours stripping it all off only to find that the standard clutch slave on a RHD car gets totally in the way and i'm not about to go into moving that!
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/20052007004.jpg
Then I spent a bit of time getting the intercooler fitted.
I wanted to cut the bumper as little as possible - i'm quite happy with the results.

http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/20052007014.jpg
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/20052007017.jpg
Did a trial fit on the rear for the 9" Nismo's . . . :D
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/20052007006.jpg
Started building up the front suspension with the whiteline arb, lower arms with S14 ball joints and uprated bushes and adjustable toe arms.
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/20052007024.jpg
Then added some S14 front hubs and inverted coil-overs for good measure!
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/20052007027.jpg
Fitted the turbo (3071R fitted into machined standard housings) on the standard manifold. Also fitted a flyin' downpipe from Oz - fits perfect!
The exhaust system consists of the flyin' downpipe, some cheap 3" twin box S13 system and an Ebay-tastic £25 decat pipe - the only modifaction i've had to do to get it all to fit is have the flange at one end of the de-cat pipe cut off and rotated around by about 15degrees.
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/20052007032.jpg
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/20052007026.jpg
Trying to find a home for my Green filter . . . something tells me it ain't gonna happen!
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/20052007025.jpg
Seeing as the 'GReddy' manifold wasn't going near the car I put the standard manifold back on the car and bought an Autobahn 88 pipework kit for an R33 GTS-T. It fits the S13 really well. Only modifications i've had to make is on the cold side of the intercooler the alloy pipe is about 2" too long so i've had to chop a bit out of the middle and i'm waiting for it to be alloy welded back together.
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/20052007028.jpg
Fitted one of Dan's 345mm brake kits today - they fit inside 8" wide 17" Nismo's . . . just and I mean just!
Can you say TOIGHT!

what power can you expect to get from a standard RB25 running about 1-1.2 bar
It will depend on your surrounding setup. On the modified 3071R, running the fundamentals (bigger injectors, fuel pump, AFM, Power FC) along with intercooler, full system, filter and a pair of stage one cams i'd like to see 400 at the flywheel with 1.2bar.

Ok thats cool, what injectors do they have as standard,
I was thinking standard engine, big front mount etc and i dont know which way to go with the ecu yet, greddy or apexi???

370's
Power FC seems to be the popular route. I think you'll be maxing the AFM and Injectors at around 380bhp.
Good work mate:thumbs:
Heres mine:nod:
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b36/neilleggyb4/Rb25build009.jpg
Whats the anti roll bar like on the sump clearance???, i'm still using the S13 one with a few washers to space it down:ghey:.
Power FC seems to be the popular route. I think you'll be maxing the AFM and Injectors at around 380bhp.
The RB25 AFM is maxed a loong way before then, mine was maxed running 13psi on a Cossie T3, est. 320ish bhp...
Just a brief update.
Been doing the boring thing of late. Flushed the brakes system through with 5.1 fluid so the brakes are all finished.
Seeing as the engine has been sitting for over 6 months I decided to drop the oil and popped some cheap 10w 40 into it with a fresh filter just to flush her through on initial start up etc.
Got jiggy with fitting the bonnet and trimmed away the required webbing to clear the inlet manfold etc. Need to get jiggy with the intercooler pipework now though!
Also indulged in some AFM porn. Bought myself a Q45 AFM with realising they weren't upto much. Then I bought a cheap Z32 with a damaged housing. Was going to repair it but seeing as I had a kinda worthless Q45 I stripped the guts out of the one and fitted it into the other so I now have an AFM that will meter over 800bhp!! Bit overkill but at least I have some head room! lol. While we were at it we wire the original fitting for the RB25 AFM plug into it so it will plug straight into the original RB25 loom, no splicing etc!!
Hoping to get her upto a satisfactory state over the next week so I can get her running and sat on 4 wheels!! Woo hoo!!! I could even give her a wash!! lol.

Tight but more than possible as long as you don't get any issues with parts!
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/20052007034.jpg
The bonus of being the design engineer incharge of the rapid prototyper at work! Made a 150mm diameter flange for my Q45/Z32 AFM. I cored out the back so that the AFM slots in and then its held in place with some bolts.
Ordered up some hoses last night so that I can plumb it all up to the turbo.

Had to modify the standard bonnet to clear the plenium and throttle body on the RB and then had to modify it a bit more to clear the intercooler pipework.
Also managed to pick up some virtually new 255/40/17's off a mate for £120 for 4 so i'm having a pair of those fitted on the rear Nismo's.
Really hope to get her running and driving very soon!

Oh really? I was looking at rapid prototyping not long ago with plans to make a new inlet manifold and plenum for the SR :p
Our system is quite a basic one at work. It lays down layers of ABS 0.2mm at a time. Cheap enough at £18k though! lol.

Simply fit a set of slightly bigger injectors and a 300zx afm and then if your really bothered about hitting the ceiling in terms of scale, then you rescale the air flow curves and map on the power fc. I do this all the time when mapping and its the propa way to make use of the software.
i
Power FC seems to be the popular route. I think you'll be maxing the AFM and Injectors at around 380bhp.
what power can you expect to get from a standard RB25 running about 1-1.2 bar
The turbo will die at 1 bar.
Thats the first thing to change really, then the ecu/injectors/everything....
You end up needing to change so much that you buy a 25g kit/cams/Ecu and realise that you have no money left but a very fast car.
like this....http://www.sxoc.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=142895
If I could start again, I'd strip the s13 totally and go for 10psi on the stock set up (280hp? at a guess).
The RB has such a sweet power delivery and really suits the s body. I just got some strange horse power adiction (old man is building a 1000hp supra). But to be totally honest I wish I had just left it alone. I haven't driven it for a year and I dont see it hitting the road any time soon, theres just so much to do.

Yeah - need to take soem more pics but yesterday she ran! Had a slight issue of me plumbing the fuel lines in back to front (doh!) but quickly discovered that one and she started almost straight away!

Sorry guys - been a bit side tracked with the old girl. Was away for a week in German at the 'Ring week before last so everything went on hold while I prep'd for that etc.
Latest purchase has been a set of Series 2 Escort RS Turbo Recaro's for £80 in good nick. Gonna go down the garage tomorrow night to knock up some seat rails using the originals and some angle iron!!
Also my cage is fully fitted, dash board is fitted etc.

Sh1te - it's been over a year since I updated this!! lol.
So i'll dig it back out from the ashes . . .
Managed to buy a damaged R33 GTR for a song so i'm switching it over from RB25 to RB26.
The engine itself is up at Buffies, just accumilating some bit's so i'm on a massive pimpage of all the bit's I don't need to get money for the bits I do! lol.
So far i've bought :
Apexi Power FC D-Jetro
Tomei 1.2 (stock thickness) metal headgasket
Uprated Turbo Elbows
Uprated Downpipe
HKS cambelt
Just gotta buy a pair of Garrett 2860-5's to replace the stock turbos (had a bad experience with a mint R32 GTR and stock turbo's a few years back and I don't want to repeat it!) and a set of 720cc injectors and hopefully i'll be sending the car itself upto Buffies for the two to come together!
Can't wait now!!
So if you know anyone who's after an RB25, 720cc injectors etc then drop me a pm!! lol.

Why aren't you putting these bits in the S15? Head to buffies for inspiration in that direction ;)
I'd love to mate but I can't afford to keep the S15 let alone mod it! The thing is because i've been buying a whole car each time i've needed something (i.e I bought a complete S13 just for the shell, bought a stuffed R33 GTST for the running gear, bought a stuffed GTR for the engine) and then selling everything I don't need this car will stand me less than £6k done.

hello phill. i bought your old power fc of you a while back. how much you after for the 720cc injectors?
your car is going to be mental when its finished. my mate ganders s13 is awsome with the 26 lump in it. both cars will be silly fast.
jus been reading through your project thread, very interesting.
im in the process of fitting a rb25 in mine and im on a tight timeline/budget.
would be nice to see a few pics of it now being a year on
To be honest not alot has actually happened to the car but i'm hoping to dig it out of the corner and give it a wash by next weekend so will take some pic's then.
I've now got everything required to get the ending ready for to go in.
Brand new pair of Garrett GT2860-5's (good for 700bhp)
Brand new pair of pukka one of tubular manifolds
50" of black exhaust wrap to do both mainfolds and downpipes
Sard 700cc injectors
Also from my RB25 i've got a Nismo twin plate clutch with matching flywheel.
Aiming to spend the weekend after next up buffies getting the engine ready so hopefully i'll have some pic's worth posting!!
Sounds Sweet bud

Same spec as mine is being built to! Who is modding your sump? PM sent regarding some other bits as well
cant believ Ive only just seen this thread:eek: good work mate, its coming along nicely:nod:
Due to the current ecconomic climate I was forced to take a few days off unpaid last week so I decided to get my car out of the garage and up to Buffies in a hope that when Ben (Evilchap's) car is sorted that my car will be next in line.
I've also be buying a few 'extras' for it such as a full set of calipers off a 2009 Aston Martin Vanquish and a set of rear discs and calipers off a 350z so hopefully i'll be doing a bit of development with them too.
Will take some pics the next time i'm up Buffies.
Just had a call from Mike to say that he's stripped the stock engine down. The head is off and the metal headgasket is going on. Hoping to get up there Wednesday evening to take some pics!
Also got some braided oil and water feeds coming this week to get rid of the stock birds nest!!

Any updates on how the engine work is progressing?
The engine is in - just gotta get it running which will hopefully be sorted in the next couple of days.
We've got the Aston Martin DB9 calipers mounted on the front with a rough mount onto 330mm discs (as i'm only running a 17" wheel I can't run the original MASSIVE DB9 discs as there is no way in the world they'd fit) . I've made a quick CAD model of the mount so I can get a nylon one made up. Once the machine shop has made that I can fit it and check for clearance issues etc then get a set of steel ones machined.
350z Brembo's are fitted on the rear - pics and explanation to come.
I've also got rid of the D-Jetro PFC and bought myself one of these . . .
http://www.cosworth.com/DisplayImage.ashx?id=63548&width=693

Yeah that's not a 200sx dash, it's the JDM Celica I took it off!!
With the Aston calipers, Mike mocked up a bracket with some radon bit's of steel just to get it sitting in the right place. I brought it home and CAD'd up a nicer version :
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/bracket.jpg
I had one made from nylon initially so we could easy sort out any teething problems. As it happens it was touching the bottom arm on full lock so we simply trimmed it with a hacksaw.

http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/CIMG0917.jpg
I'm going to modify the CAD model now and get a set made up in something a bit more solid. That will be the brakes done then!!

Yeah the car has been sat out in the weather. They'll clean up though with a bit of elbow grease.
Just another quick update - managed to spend a bit of time getting the brake bracket model updated, here is the final production design :
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/bracket_2.jpg
Just gotta get a pair made now!!
Thought i'd update this - not got any pictures at the mo but there will be loads coming shortly!!
The brackets for the Aston calipers will be with my by the end of the month, been waiting ages to get a sensible quote on machining them.
I bought a set of 18" BBS LM's off Shaf on here - 9 front and 10 rear. They fit the car just nice so took them to have them split down and the outers polished. Just gotta buy tyres for them now! Looking at sitcking Hankook RS-2's on it.
And . . . on Friday Mike (Buffy) called me - she's a runner!! :notworthy
It's running on the PFC at the moment until I can get the Pectel into it so that is going to be one of the next job's on the cards once the radiator is mounted and the brakes are all fitted.
Hopefully i'll be bringing her home in about 3 weeks and then I can work on getting her on the road!!
:eek::eek::eek:
Well done phill, good news on the horizon!
O
Yeah, about time! lol.
Will drop those seats up once i've got the van back on the road too!!
Popped up to Mikes today - took my BBS LM's to a local tyre place and had a few part worn's fitted on them just to get them on the car. I went for tyres that are a bit wider than I plan to run to ensure I make more than enough clearance.
The front's now have 235/40/18's and the rears have 285/30/18's. I plan to run Hankook RS-2 225/40/18's on the front and 265/35/18's on the rear.

You should pop past the garage mate - she's home now after having the suspension set-up. Looking a little sorry for her self at the minute though - stripped the front wings and the doors off. The doors on the car were a bit dingy and letting the car down a bit. Mike had a nice straight set of doors up there in the right colour so i'm in the process of swapping them over.

Just thought i'd post a bit of an update.
When I had the car back from Mikes it had a slight oil leak from the sump so I popped it off (not a 5minute job I can tell you) and popped it up the road to a mate who does alloy welding. Turns out there was a hairline crack in it so he welded it up for me and I picked it up yesterday.

When I went to fit the Bride seats I found that when mounted on the rail it sat way too high! I'm not exactly tall at 5'10" but my head was almost touching the roof. So me and one of the boys chopped all the feet off it and re-welded it so that it sits about 40mm lower. It doesn't sound alot but it's made a massive difference to how high I sit now. It would be nice to go down another 20mm but that would involve major surgery so we'll leave it as it is for the moment.

I had the bootlid off it and popped it down to a mates who is awesome at dealing with 'organic lightening' or rot as it's more commonly known. As it happens I was very lucky with this bootlid, there was only a bit going around one of the holes (you wouldn't have known it was there when the boot spolier was fitted). I decided I wanted to go for the smooth option so got him the chop the rusty bit out, weld up all the holes including the rear wiper and give it a coat of paint :

We've also spent a bit of time bashing the sound deadening out of it - got about half of it out so far!

Hoping to get the sump back on it this week and then get the front end and doors on it. Ideally want to get it looking like a car by the end of next weekend.

LOL
There have been many distractions along the way the biggest one being he is getting married in a few months lol
We need this completed ASAP now though as it's going to the Nurburgring at the end of April for the Stag doo !
Hope he's having a local one too! :whip:
And sorry, still haven't been round to have a good nose at the car! :(

Things are moving on with this now and i had the whip out last night lol
If it's not on the road and being MOT'd by Monday he is getting shafted with the biggest breaker bar i can find  oh and no copper slip will be used either
Lol - easy tiger!
We had a good session on the car last night - doors are back on it, all built up with the loom, door handles, mirrors, door cards etc.
Even more of the sound deadening has been removed and Nick hard wired my fuel pump too. (cheers butt!).
Plan for tomorrow night is to get the passenger seat mounted and I need to clean the sump up ready for it too go back on this weekend.
Spent a bit of time on the CAD knocking up some models for switch panels. I don't want to go drilling holes all over the place for the additional switches I require for the ECU etc so I decided to use up some spare space.
I have a pair of DIN radio panels that take 3 x 52mm gauges each. I have boost, oil temp and oil pressure mounted in one and my VEM's EGT / Wide Band mounted in the other, therefore I had 2 gauge holes empty.
I decided to knock together some models for these, which will be manufactured out of plastic on a rapid prototype machine tomorrow :
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/SWITCH_PLATE_1.jpg
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/SWITCH_PLATE_2.jpg
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/SWITCH_PLATE_3.jpg
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/SWITCH_PLATE_4.jpg
I put a shoulder on the back of them so they will locate in the 52mm gauge holes. I had to chop out a bit on the CAL / TC one as the pots were too big and wouldn't fit otherwise.
So we have :
ALS = Anti-lag
LC = Launch Control
TC = Traction Control
FAN = Manual Fan Overide
TC = Traction Control Cut Level
CAL = Boost / Map switch

Are you going to go for an indicator light for the Fans ?
It might be more of a PITA than it's worth to be honest though!
Also the switch for the Fan will need to be a two position switch as per my drawing above ;) this will allow you to override the auto function the ECU outputs.
Loving the idea with the plates though  it's going to look very neat :)
What about indicator lights for the various switches ?
Im thinking about later on here mind it's not going to matter for the trip
Any news on Ben for mapping ?
We can always drill holes in the plates to add indicator lights as and when mate.
The Fan switch is a two position as you requested mate! All the rest as single jobbies.
No news from Ben as yet. I know he's supposed to be doing that job out in Germany that didn't happen when we went out there last year, this weekend.

This is brilliant, a very interesting read! I hope mine turns out as good as this!
And here are the switch plates fresh off the prototype machine. Ignore the green colour, that's just the colour of the material that was in the machine at the time. They will be painted before being fitted.

Ohh so who gets they joy of sorting the cal dials then
Looking good mate :)
Well she's a runner! I've got it up and running on the PFC D-Jetro for the min until I can get the Pectel into it but at least now I can put some miles under her belt and start ironing out any teething problems as the plan is to take it to the Nurburgring in a month!!
Big thankyou the Jezz_S13 for coming to play with the datalogit this evening and get the ECU and the SARD 800's playing ball.
Got it booked in for MOT on Sat and then tax it the first of the month!!
Crikey Phil, careful now, you're in danger of actually using it :wack:
Plan is to tax it the first of the month mate and use it as a 'daily' until I go to Germany to get a feel for the car and make sure nothing fall's off!!
Plus now that the car is actually on the road the pressure is off a little (although getting the Pectel into it needs to happen asap) and I cna look for your wheel nut!! lol.

Lol - don't worry too much mate, my car has far worse problems than an odd-coloured wheel nut at the mo :smash:

Phil so did it pass the MOT ?
Has Christian been over ?
Is the Pectel definitely going in the car, as otherwise you only have manual control over the fans !!! and no boost control or als or lc or tc or.....lol
I may be able to sort something out with the stock wiring to the OEM fan if it's not going to happen, it wont be ideal though as the temp will have to get up around 90 degrees in order for it to start the fan, so it is going to possibly see 100 ish during the cooling cycle.
Yeah she has an MOT!
Need to speak to Ben regarding the Pectel in the week when he get's back from Oz.
Hoping to get Christian up in the next few days to do the roof.
Will get some pics and a video clip up some time soon!!

Sweet :)
Need a definite on the Pectel ASAP i know that is an impossible task with the Hoyle.
Tomorrow after the race outcome, we may know if it's going to be possible for him to drag himself away from his work laptop long enough to make a visit to Wales.
Im sure he could do the rough map and setup of ports without being here though. So may be worth asking him that first.
Then it should be a simple mapping session with a few tweeks when he gets time to come down.
Have you got all the sensors you need ?

LOL
Race was the best one yet today  granted the weather played a huge part in the amount of action but it's nice to actually see some passing for a change.
Had my mate who works for a sticker company come around and vinyl the roof for me today, simply because it's quicker and cheaper!
Here are some pic's of it in progress . . .

And the finished job . . .
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/Picture042.jpg
And then to make it all little different we added a subtle satin black Nurburgring logo on the top . . .
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/Picture043.jpg
And due to the cage being fitted and not having any sun visors I had him fit me a sun strip also :
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/Picture047.jpg
Next job, tax it!! Went to do it today but the Post Office was shut due to it being good Friday so i'll do it in the morning and then take it out and get some miles into it!!
I bought some of the Bride material off Ebay - although i've no doubt it's rip-off stuff as it came from Hong Kong the material is really nice quality.
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/Picture001.jpg
Seeing as i've got the Bride seats in the car and the interior is pretty stripped out I thought i'd improve the looks a little by first recovering the glove compartment :
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/Picture002.jpg
And then I got my missus to make me a gear gaitor!!
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/phill200sx/Picture003.jpg
The next job is going to be the door cards.

Looks great phil, i like the bride glove box!!
Yeah quite pleased with how they came out. If i was to do the glove box again i'd try and get the lettering more central but the cage covers some of the left hand side so when it's in the car it may look like it was intended.

Don't do it central
Looks good like that mate.
How much you got leftover lol
