View Full Version : Dodgy ND Actuator

I have just had the Norris Designs boost upgrade kit consisting of uprated actuator + colder plugs fitted by a performance car specialist. Has anyone else installed this and had any problems. My car has been on a rolling road for 3 hours trying to turn the boost down because the mechanics reckon the engine will explode. They have recommended that I put the original back on. They think the actuator is very poor as it belts out a quick boost then tails off. So £500 later I should have my car back to square one. The output is a pathetic 171hp.

With the standard turbo you should set the boost to 15-16 psi max. If you have the standard intercooler you will notice that the boost drops WAY off at peak rpm. This is normal until you get a bigger intercooler.
Hope that helps you

Also if you have the standard chip you will hit fuel cut at 15psi ish
JPAWSON8 - 2 weeks ago I fitted an ND actuator and chip and have had it on the rolling road, the boost will tail off (dramatically) until you get an big exhaust (I dont know if you already have one on). The exhaust is often forgotten about and looked upon as something that makes noise, but if the engine cant get rid of the gases, it cant take more in either. Mine does exactly the same, I doubt its anything to do with the actuator - dont put the original one back on, its pants.
Id worry more about the "mechanics" that are saying the actuator isnt working and how it took them three hours to turn an 8mm nut. And the engine wont blow up if it has a standard chip in it as the fuel cut will stop anything untoward happening.
A new intercooler isnt even necessary, the original one although crap will take 16psi through it. Just a big pipe, air filter and an actuator WILL scoot around 200bhp.
For what its worth I went to some numb nut with a rolling road, I should probably tell him to check these boards as he just might learn somethin. I got told a) The turbo is cracked. (I knew this was a lie) b) the wastegate is malfunctioning and c) the engine is "old"
It was only when I pointed out that perhaps the boost was tailing off because of a crap intercooler and a standard exhaust he changed his mind, and agreed with me. If I hadnt have mentioned it he was very willing to take the turbo off and have it reconditioned for me, bless him.
rant over. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif
Im running the ND actuator, and its currently peaking and holding 16psi no problems, Ive also had it holding 20psi on testing, the drop off is due to small turbo and intercooler mainly.

I've had no probs with my ND jobbie, I reckon a big ass howling exhausts in order...

Hi Guys
Thankyou for your comments. I have the ND stage 1 chip installed, unfortunately my car went into a garage for diagnostics and the lovely garage changed my exhaust without even asking me, if they did I would have requested a performance exhaust. So I am bit miffed at paying another £300 to replace a 1 month old exhaust.

It really does seem like the garages just dont give a toss, I have yet to find one that I really like and trust.

I'm just using a SE _Nissan Bleed valve @ around 15/16psi.
Is this ok, or do u guys recommend I go out and get an Actuator?

If its the same one that they put on my car then its a load of garbage. They just use a carb jet stuffed in the end of a piece of hose. I'd get an adjustable bleed valve, that way you can still run standard boost (if you ever want to!).

I've just picked my car up with the original actuator put back on. When the car went in with the ND actuator the output was 171 bhp with the original one changed back over it went up to 180 bhp. With a bit of tweaking it's now 185 bhp with a smooth curve unlike with the previous ND actuator which rose steeply than dropped right off.
