If you get a pay raise, and it's less than the rate of inflation, what would you think of that?

I'm guessing it's not illegal to do so, as you could be given no pay raise and therefore anything you do get is something to be grateful for, but to me it doesn't say much about the company you work for if you are going to be worse off.

I'd be pissed off - even us lowly shop workers gets at least the rate of inflation...saying AT LEAST, it usually is (..ok IS) THE rate of inflation.

*even more motivation to do well at uni*

I'd be pretty pissed and would probably leave.

To me it shows how much the company values me... I'd take it as an insult!

Is it just you, or everyone? If it's everyone, it might mean the company is tightening it's belt in a hard financial period, or that they're just tight b******ds. If it's just you then it's intended as a comment on your performance.

Yeah, at my last place they were tight as beasts. It was only when I turned around and told my manager that I was thinking of becoming a part time secretary and earning more than in my "skilled job" (journalist on national agency) that something got done...

IT sounds like they are being vvvv tight.... Do you get any other bonuses -like discounts, concessions etc?

No pay rise or a pay rise that is less than the rate of inflation is in fact a pay CUT.

They've done this either because they're in deep financial doodoo or because they couldn't give a stuff about the people working for them.

Either way, I'd start looking for something else where your services are valued a little better than that.

the whole reason i left the last company i worked for is cos the boss p!ssed me about for 18months over a pay rise.... i'd gone from account exec to account handler (2 positions up) in 8 months, impressed the sh!t outta everyone, took the account from 1.8mill to 2.6mill (about £110k profit per annum extra) and when he finally did stump up a rise it was a "measly" 1.5k - and i could still earn more per hour workin at lakeside

In my new job ive started on £2.5k more than i left the last one on, i have a pay review every 6 months and i have it written into my contract that a pay rise below the rate of inflation is a no no no no no :)

Start looking for another job matey - there are better companies out there :)

snag is bosses can do pretty much anything they want in this current economic state. making thousands redundant seems to be a popular pastime

so payrise? be grateful!

True

I guess you guys that haven't had a pay rise for a couple of years are in IT?

Have a look at how much you get paid, and then search job banls for similar jobs and see the difference. I bet you'll be on a lot more than new starters, just cos the market is satuarated!

Sure, can you let me know in a PM ?

The last pay review, the whole of the Preston Service Centre got an x% raise (i don't remember the figure now) , lower than inflation, while certain 'other' departments got somewhat more...
