I have been so busy the last week, what with running in the new engine, mapping it, new brakes and bedding them in, TAX and MOT, trackday @ Snetterton on Wednesday etc. etc. I have just been too tired to tell all about the new engine etc. Well that is my excuse and I'm sticking to it:D

Anyway, some pictures:

http://www.dropshots.com/photos/127158/20070216/b_162500.jpg

The long awaited grade 5 shells finaly installed, with the balanced bottom end.

http://www.dropshots.com/photos/127158/20070216/b_162601.jpg

I guess we need some pitons now.

http://www.dropshots.com/photos/127158/20070216/b_163325.jpg

Custom made Arias forged pistons, which are more than twice the price of off the shelf R33 RB25DET pistons.

http://www.dropshots.com/photos/127158/20070216/b_163256.jpg

N1 oil and water pumps.

http://www.dropshots.com/photos/127158/20070216/b_163404.jpg

Greddy exhaust manifolds can crack, just like the rest.

http://www.dropshots.com/photos/127158/20070216/b_163408.jpg

Lets see how long that lasts.

http://www.dropshots.com/photos/127158/20070216/b_163338.jpg

Nobody makes a large capacity baffled sump for the NEO engine, so RSP fabricated a 7 litre one for me.

http://www.dropshots.com/photos/127158/20070216/b_163334.jpg

Tomei GTR baffle kit.

http://www.dropshots.com/photos/127158/20070216/b_163416.jpg

Nearly done.

http://www.dropshots.com/photos/127158/20070216/b_163424.jpg

All done and painted. The oil pick up to the oil pump was extended to reach the bottom of the new sump.

http://www.dropshots.com/photos/127158/20070227/b_185706.jpg

In an effort to stop me from keep getting Black flagged at trackdays, the screamer pipe from the Greddy external wastegate has been plumbed back into the exhaust down pipe, with a removable flanged section. When the section is removed for normal road use, the rear flange is blanked off and the front flange from the wastegate has an angled section pointing towards the ground.

http://www.dropshots.com/photos/127158/20070227/b_185723.jpg

I took many hours to design and fabricate the exhaust and sump!

Oh yeah and who said that Greddy plenum couldn't be made to fit the NEO engine? RSP managed it, together with a Q45 throttle body :D

http://www.dropshots.com/photos/127158/20070303/b_124423.jpg

New fuel rail too.

http://www.dropshots.com/photos/127158/20070303/b_124508.jpg

Plenum, throttle body and turbo all polished by our Eddie (ESP)

http://www.dropshots.com/photos/127158/20070303/b_124443.jpg

Just need to replace one or two hoses for Blue ones and then get polishing the engine bay.

looks great, good luck with it matey.

Looking at the n1 waterpump, where you've got the slotted hole with the 10mm bolt going into it, that is a very reknowned point for the waterpump to leak!
When i had mine i filed a penny washer to the right shape and filled the slot with instant gasket to keep it water tight, before that it took 4-5 attempts at faffing about asking advice off people and removing the waterpump, cambelt etc because it kept leaking.

hope that might be of some use :)

I heard the neo's are more stressed than the older RB25's as stock how have you found the tuning route in comparison mate ?

The R34 NEO's are a lot harder to source parts for compared to the older R33 RB25DET. Although they produce more power as standard, they have smaller injectors, which soon max out with stage one mods. They do however have GTR rods and solid lifters as standard:thumbs:

Hi matey... Looks ace.. What fuel rail is that? My friend is after a custom one.

It's was one of a batch bought by RSP to fit GTR's, except they didn't, so it was modified to fit mine.

Dave, we don't know at the moment as it's only been mapped at 1.2 bar.

It will be going back to RSP for further tweaking, mapping etc soon, and then it will be running much higher bar. :D :D

When it's all done it will then go on the rolling road, then we will know how much power it's putting out.

Every time I see that car I want to get an R34 GTT

Bubble
20-05-2008, 00:01
Well things have changed a bit since that engine was built, so..........

I thought that it was about time that I updated this thread. Things have not gone to plan and the RB30 & T04Z have taken much longer than we first thought to install.

CardiffR33 (Ben) had his car collected by RSP for a similar conversion before mine and the plan was to duplicate more or less everything that was done to Bens, for mine.

I specified some extra bits and bobs, so they were never going to be identical though. While Bens was being done, my GTT had a dummy RB30 installed, so as to get ahead with the manufacture of the custom front pipe and screamer pipe return. The new 120mm deep:eek: front mount intercooler was installed and custom pipework made up to fit.

All the pipework was sent off with Bens for polishing to save time, along with some other parts too.

http://media3.dropshots.com/photos/127158/20080517/210642.jpg

The T04Z just fits below the strut brace

http://media5.dropshots.com/photos/127158/20080517/210515.jpg

Once again, I specified that the external Tial 44mm wastgate screamer pipe was to be plumbed back into the exhaust front pipe. It has a flexi section to allow for heat expansion and vibration etc. This section will not be fitted for normal road use, but it will have to be on there to keep the noise down for trackdays.

http://media3.dropshots.com/photos/127158/20080517/210810.jpg

I bought another NEO cylinder head so that I could keep the old engine intact as a complete unit and here it is fitted to the RB30 bottom end. Oil feed line to the VVT to keep the variable valve timing functioning too. There are also restrictors in the block to stop too much oil flooding the top end of the engine, which is a common RB problem with high revs.

http://media3.dropshots.com/photos/127158/20080517/210918.jpg

I specified an oil drain from the back of the head to return excess oil externally back down to the sump pan. This has been a time consuming exercise, as the original fitting fouled the transmission tunnel the the engine couldn't be fitted. Another fitting was sourced after a couple of days and the engine and box went in. But the clearance was still very tight and it would have entailed the engine and gearbox being taken out as one unit if there was a problem with the clutch :(

So another smaller fitting was sourced and now the gear box can be taken out independantly. Apparantly the transmission tunnel is different on the GTT and there is more room on a GTR.

http://media3.dropshots.com/photos/127158/20080517/211050.jpg

I didn't fancy a rattly binary action tripple plate clutch and after doing some research and on the good advice from Rockabilly (Bernie) I bought a NISMO Super Coppermix twin plate clutch. I could have saved a chunk with a cheaper ORC, but as the GTT is my daily driver, I wanted something that wouldn't be a pain in traffic.

http://media4.dropshots.com/photos/127158/20080517/210316.jpg

Work in progress.........

http://media5.dropshots.com/photos/127158/20080517/210143.jpg

Custom oil catch tank and just about everything done now

I got a phone call while I was at Japfest from Richard Bell and heard it running for the first time :D It has done about 100 miles on the dyno already

There are a couple of problems still to overcome though. There is a small exhaust leak from the exhaust front pipe, which will be sorted out on Monday. Oh and the bonnet still wont shut.........every time I ring up RSP for an update on progress, I ask yeah - but does the bonnet shut :smash::D

If you see an R34 with a scooby bonnet scoop, you know it's me :D

Flippin heck!!

I was talking to Damo @ RSP earlier on this afternoon and I could hear my car on the dyno with Brian and Rich putting some miles on it and reving to just 4,500rpm.

Sounded great :D

Then it went quiet..............

Rich came on the phone and although it hasn't yet got many miles on the engine, they gave it just one blat to 6,500rpm

With boost controller off and 1.1 bar actuater pressure, no real mapping and wheel spinning..........

546bhp @ the fly :D
520lbs torque

Richard said it's going to be an animal and both he and Brian are so happy at how it has turned out, with 0.5 bar boost @ 3,500rpm and full 1.1 bar boost by 4,100rpm

With 1.4 bar it's going to easily make well over 600bhp with the only limiting factor going to be the 750cc injectors and Nismo in tank fuel pump.

Ben doesn't have the screamer pipe plumbed back into the exhaust front pipe, or have the oil drain from the back of the cylinder head. I think that apart from that they are much the same.

The difference is unbelieveable, when you put your foot down the car just wants to go, it pulls so well and smoothly. I just cannot wait until it is fully run in and mapped. :)

Only downside to this is that now my skyline feels so slow in comparison...

Not for long though. ;)

678 bhp @ 7,500 running 1.5 bar

574lbs

Running out of fuel pressure at the top end and the boost is tailing off after 6,000rpm, but I think the power is adequate for my needs :D

Well I left work in Colchester at 2.30pm yesterday afternoon and with the Friday afternoon traffic round the M25:annoyed: I didn't get to RSP untill 6.00pm:(

I was completely knackered and suffering from a cold didn't make me feel any better (could be man-flu);)

After a welcome cup of coffee (thanks Damo) and a chat about the car and a couple of things left to sort out, I left and filled up with V-Power again. My credit card is taking a right hammering this month:smash:

After driving for a bit and getting the oil up to temperature, I changed down to fourth and floored it..........OMFG :eek::eek: dry road and rear tyres scrabbling for grip.........this is going to need respect

Just putting your foot down in fith and the accelleration is relentless, I have never, ever been in anything so quick.

I made the mistake of dropping down to third to punt past one car on the M11...........one huge sideways moment later

I allways said to Richard Bell that I wanted a car that would scare me. You soon get used to 500bhp and sometimes crave for more, but this is phenominal, well done Richard and all at RSP :notworthy:notworthy:notworthy
