What smaller cars, say.. Umm.. J/K-reg onwards.. as a DIESEL! were available.. or would you reccomend?.. Much be incredibly cheap to buy.

Include all Fords, and other such evils, in this, please :(

Ta, in advance.

Theyre not exactly small but Pug 405 turbo diesels are the dogs nads. Cheap to buy, cheap to run, very, very reliable, very comfortable (electric everything and armchair sized seats). They will cruise at nigh on a ton with no probs, handle well (for their size) and are pretty nippy. Parts are for nothing and there are loads in breakers.

Altogether superb motors and its the only car Ive got at the moment that I wouldnt consider selling, Im going to run it until its dead :D Mines done 210k miles and drives like its done 60k, fantastic motors :)

Yeah, I would've liked to have got a saloon as such, but going from an insurance quote I just ran through for a 1.8 Mondeo, it's just as expensive for a bigger diesel, as it'd be for a 1.3 petrol Swift :)

Cheapness is of the essence! :D

Citroen AX 70mpg about £500+,
Saxo/106 60 mpg 1.4/1.5D £750+,
Fiat Punto 1.7D 50mpg £500+,
Ford Fiesta 1.8D 45mpg £free+,
Fiat Uno D ?£?
Pug 205 D (turbo ones fly!)
I would go for the 106/Saxo unless you need a lot of space, then the Punto. :)

Or something like an old polo 1.0l, got given one last week for nowt and it runs perfectly with no rust at all!

Sadly not arry :(

Planning a.. buy the cheapest car to own, insure and run, whilst you work your arse off to get yourself out of debt. :)

Not sure if I'd fit in a 106... :-/

6ft 1 + 24st-plus = Bugger

Yeah, we had a Pug 106 1.4 diesel for a bit. Not much room if your on the larger size (my knees were alsways jammed under the steering wheel) but you get used to it. My dad used to drive it a lot and hes 6'3"!

They have problems with the head gaskets but other than that you can hammer the hell out of them with no worries. No, I tell a lie, the g/boxes are pretty crap as well so make sure the syncros are ok and you get no graunching. And try to get a 1.5 as they are far more common. The only real down side is that they are slooooooooooowwwwwwwww.

Ah, well, the 106 isnt for you then!! LOL Youll find the same problems with Novas and Unos so I wouldnt bother looking at them either.

I did actually have the mispleasure of driving a H reg Fiesta to Plymouth and back. As a comparrison, I could just about fit comfortably in a Fiesta.

I'd rather not drive a Ford, mind  :(

Dunno really second one I've been given this year!
Mate was moving abroad and had been running round in the polo for the last couple of years, he couldn't be arsed selling it as he didn't have the time, neighbours are getting pretty upset about my growing collection though

D mate, what ever you buy youre gonna have to chuck on the whale tail and blue washer jets to fit in with the seemingly endless numbers of Oldhams maseeef don't ya know? Bo selecta in the area sort of thing.....oh, and some really badly fitted limo tints!

And if you could fit in an AX, I knew a girl that had one that would run and run just by driving past petrol stations and that wasn't even the Diesel! Amazing driving to Bradford and back and not even seeing the needle move!

Good luck:)

Stuymac had a very nice and very reasonably priced Sierra TurD oops i mean TurboDiesel, which was rather fine cruising on the motorway.

I'll tell you a mutts nutts turbo diesel to get your self is a nova or corsa 1.5 td. They are fitted with a fantastic Jap (izusu) diesel engine. They run 67bhp as standard and return around 60+ mpg but the don't half shift for a little car. Also they are rally tunable for a diesel if that the route you may like to go. With a filter and a boost upgrade you can get around 100bhp out of them.

A friend of mine in college had on fitted with a hybrid turbo from a uno (the use a similar IHI turbo), gas flowed head, charge cooler, filter, full system and 2 bar of boost (I **** you not!!) and it was running a 160bhp!!

I'd never seen anything like it in my life!! So i've now bought one myself as a back and fourth to work car and have fitted a filter, inercooler and have managed to sort out incar adjustable boost (not quite as easy as a petrol car) and she don't half shift!!

Don't say these things, because you know full well, I'll do it as a complete piss take ;)

Car has to be supersuper cheap. I'm looking for a diesel a) for cheap running and b) because diesels seem to be a little cheaper to insure.

As much as I'd love a Swift GTi, to bomb around in. I need to be realistic. I'd end up spending FAR too much on it, I know full well I would.

The coming years are going to have to be all about saving, paying off debt, and sorting myself out.

Then I'll just have to get an S15 or something ;)

Ive got one which will be up for sale as soon as I get my nissan back! 1993 L reg in a lovely purple. I had my valeter friend take the badges off it and t cut it so nobody knows its a diesel untill you start it. Best engine corsa I recon. My sister has the 1.7D and it is turd compared to mine. As fast as a 1.4 16v and 60mpg is easily obtained. Even if you drive everywhere at speed you still return 45 - 50! Will cruise at 90mph easily as I used to drive 100 miles up the M1 and 100 miles back to see my ex and could do it in 1hr 10mins all the time. Pisses off all the BMW drivers and the like 'cause unless they are in a diesel themselves they cant afford to go faster than a purple corsa! Make me an offer on it if you like ;)

Cheers,

Richard

Depending on the on your buget, a Golf Tdi (MK3 i think, the previous to the current golf) might be worth considering. I get over 60 mpg however i drive it (i got 70+ whilst driving like a saint). Parts are cheap (G & S, Eurocarparts), but they do hold their price. The Tdi was introduced on L or M plate and you can probably pick one up for around £2000-£3000 (probably not what you had in mind when you said cheap). There was a Td version, which is cheaper, but it is slower and less economical. The main difference is in the engine management, the Tdi is computer controlled everything and is direct injection, whereas the Td is a standard diesel setup. The car is big enough and comfortable enough for most but at 6ft and 24st your going to have problems with any of the small cars (and some of the big cars).

Pug 205 might be worth considering, stacks of them about not too shabby in the driving qualities, good economy and bomb proof engines. Peanuts to insure aswell (usually!!!). They are quite comfortable aswell but it is still a small car.

I would go for a car with the Pug diesel engine, pref. with a turbo.

Known for their longevity (200k miles easy for a turbo, loads more for non-turbo) and usually come in a cheap car, with reasonable insurance.

But then I'm biased as bought the Mrs a BX TurboD, and it aint slow (the turbo comes in with a quite entertaining surge), but still gives 50mpg when thrashing it a bit. 60mph is a surprisingly quiet and refined 2000rpm.

( Plus I entertained a small child while stuck in traffic by lowering and raising the BX suspension :D )

Next door has a 405 turbo diesel estate, which is if anything even more impressive for a big old barge.

Cheers, Phil

Back in the days before I got an AX diesel, I considered a 205 1.8D, but the insurance quotes were way high for the car it was - I could have had relatively sporty hatches for cheaper
