how do you jack up a car this high:

I'd like to stonechip my car and getting it this high up would make life a thousand times easier

Also when painting the underside of the car do you have to remove everything from it (subframes, diff gearbox, propshafts etc?)

Probably a combination of several jacks and axel stands!

So is it just a case of one jack at either end and raise the car up, when it's high enough put two more jacks underneath that are raised up on wood or something and carry on etc

is that safe:confused: surely your car is worth more than price of getting it underseald at a garage with a lift...

well and you if your under it when it colaopses

tbh I don't trust anyone else to do it properly. I'd like to find a safe way of getting the car up that high like he has

thats just up on trestle's common practice for race cars.you can get really high axle stands.

a decent 2 tonne garage jack with some blocks of wood will do the trick.if you can blag another then its safer just walk the car up in stages.

Jacks at kwik fit and other garages go higher than your average joe one but i don't think that i woul dbe happy working under a car like the TVR 'supported'

tbh I don't see how the TVR is worse than using axle stands in the first place (if not more stable)

I suppose you could build some monster wooden ramps/structure

you can make it in two parts, one a full length structure for the garage and 2 detatchable run/ramps to get teh car on/these you can store in the garden.

Yes of course, but they aren't your average Halfords 15 quid trolley jack!

Just use a big jack and big axle stands, pay attention to what you are doing and use a level surface, shouldn't be dangerous or difficult :)

I think machine mart do a jack for 4x4`s with a high lift (about 650mm).

Drive up ramps on the front then jack the back ?

If you look carefully, you can see the tvr in on axle stands (follow the beams supporting it to the outside edges )

They look pretty hefty (about 20 tons at a guess) which is why it's so high.

Also you'll notice that the chassis has also been removed from the tvr, which takes most of the weight factor out of lifting it, which is probably how he's got away with doing this ;)

I'd already seen the axle stands :smash:

so you reckon a full car is going to be way to heavy to do this to then? :(

ok, anyone know anywhere you can hire the use of a lift for a day on the weekend or something :wack:

It's not the weight factor thats a problem. It's raising a car that high safely on jacks

If you're not friendly with any mechanics who wouldn't mind you lending their ramps for a few hours then I'd pop to your local garage and have a word tbh  surely not that many places can spaz up a simple bit of undersealing

Might even be worthwhile asking if you can do it or at least lend a hand...

Yeah but they do just that, spray underseal on and nothing else, if there's any rust on there they just spray over it sealing it in to rot away hidden from view :smash: which is why I want to take my time and do it properly  I'll have a word with my local place then

I can understand perfectly m8 after helping my bro do his mx-5

If you're looking to do a job like that then the safest way I can suggest is to reverse the car onto a set of ramps and jack the front up (both sides at the same time, so you're gonna need two jacks and the help of a mate  )

then once level, support on a pair of axle stands

Not the prettiest way, but should give you enough room to spray and grind/wire brush anything that you may need to

*edit* - defo worthwhile using BA if using this method because of the close proximity of the stonechip

 Safest and only way to do it DIY. Make sure you chock the wheels on the ramps and do not do this at the roadside.

lol :D

BA = Breathing Aparatus (sp?) ok, maybe a bit over the top :wack:

Defo the minimum needed is a dust mask... I'd go for the high(er) quality think ones and not the paper thin ones that don't quite fit properly and always end up steamin up my glasses :(
