I borrowed all three books from a mate 6 months ago and I still haven't started them! The idea was to read the books before seeing the films but........ People keep saying they're heavy going so I keep putting it off. Somebody encourage me to start them please :)

... wouldn't say heavy going especially, there's a helluva lot of detail, description and history in the books which does slow the pace down at times (I found myself going back two or three pages at times just to make sure I completely understood it).
You have to immerse yourself in it, definately not a book to skim through.... It took me 6 months to read it the first time !

PS. If you can't manage to sit down and read 'em, get a copy of the radio play, it's the next best thing :).

*Oh yeah, favourite character........ Smeagol/Gollum.*

You've got to read them.

I found it better to read lots of pages in one go rather than a couple at a time.

I love the films, but it misses out some great stuff and from what I read about the Two Towers, they are totally changing one of the really good parts from how it went in the book.

Robbie,
Read the books!
The movies are really great (I mean it, it was a difficult challenge to tranlate books into movies, but the man who managed "bad taste"( to who understands me), did a very great job...)

but, there are lots AND lots of details, that can NOT be placed in a 2 hours movie!! Just read the 3 of them before the 3th episode is out on the screens, you'll be able to amaze your friends with your knowledge ;) , and you'll spend good time :)

Cheers

Fabien (who read them 15 years ago in French, and 10 years ago in English :p )

I read T's earlier work 'The Hobbit' first, which really helps understanding some of the basics in LOTR.
Some parts are indeed a little tedious, and some parts are downright soap..., but it is one of the best books in its genre: adventure stories for boys...
Still have to see the movies myself.

Cheers!

They left al ot out in the Cinema release, but the special edition fellowship has 30 minutes extra running time, and a lot has been put back in.

2 Towers has earned some rave reviews. Even been referred to as "The Best Film Ever"

I can't wait to see it.
