Hi All,

One of the MX5 clubs is organising another trackday bulk booking at Castle Coombe on the 23rd March. It'll be a full day, probably 20 minute sessions.

As with most coombe organised trackdays, there's free tuition available, all day :)

If they can get 25 people, it works out to be £115 for the day. There's currently 19 of us down as confirmed, so we aren't that far off.

http://www.castlecombecircuit.co.uk/

for circuit info..

Noise limit is 100Db - and they enforce this fairly strictly. I believe they have tailpipe silencers for rent / loan as a few people ended up using them last time.

If you are interested, please reply, we will need a list of definites ASAP :)

The final date for booking and payments will be 16th Feb :)

Confirmed so far:

Jonboy
Jez
Damson Devil
Buffy +1

Cheers,

Jon

Jez
16-01-2007, 11:32
Very interested in this - how can I sign up?

Jonny
16-01-2007, 11:53
One of the guys is doing a 'group buy' direct with CC - so if we get the 25 people, we get a much better price :)

I can put your name on the list - if we get the 25 he'll start asking for payment details, then you send him the money and he pays CC in mid feb...

Jez
16-01-2007, 11:56
OK cool - put my name down :)
Just got to get my engine rebuilt now!

Jonny
16-01-2007, 12:56
Brilliant :) I'm using it as a deadline to fit all my bits too ;)

There's always the evo if the SR's not built :)

Jeff & I may be interested in taking the Capri if we can get it through another MOT :smash:

Comedy car ahoy! :D

Jonny
17-01-2007, 15:34
Woohoo :)

We are at 20 confirmed now, from what I understand, 22 is the cheapy cut off point, so we only need a few more definites :)

Has anyone had any experiance on this track, whats it like for a novice? are there large run-offs?
The Apex trackday at elvington was my first and i did have a couple of excursions outside of the coned area, and am a little worried about armco and tyre walls on a real circuit.

Robbie P

i might be interested in this - funds permitting

Loads of people do their first track time there at Japfest without any issues. Instructors will be useful  and have you flying round safely in no time :)

Jonny
18-01-2007, 15:50
Extra drivers are £40 for the day I believe, passengers are free :)

As for run offs - there's a few bits where there isn't a lot, but in general, it's pretty good. Not really any better or worse than any other track.

I believe we've hit 22 confirmed people now, so the £115 price definitely applies :)

Just be carefull braking for Quarry , as car will go light over brow into braking zone, and no run off!!!!!

There should still be places left. I'll put you down as a maybe Richy - let me know if you become definiate ;)

As for payment - I'll post details up soonish - within the next week or so I guess. You'll need to pay the guy who will then block book it with Castle Coombe :)

And the following possibles:-
Richy_Boy
Pete_c
MoonHead
RpettaFor

06-02-2007, 21:16
Also are you guys aware of the noise regs?

Its 100db at 4,500 revs.

Don't want any of you guys disappointed at the track side!

ckdbrisk
07-02-2007, 09:46
There is info on the day at this address:-

http://www.box.net/public/8ix22pcjrq

Its a PDF about the day, safety regs, and a map of how to get there.

The format is 4 sessions an hour with up to 20 cars per session.

Bring £10 cash as a deposit for a helmet if you don't already have one.

We'll probably be on track at about 9(ish) with an hour for lunch at about 12.

It goes through until 5pm, with the possibility of being "open pit" towards the end. If enough people leave!

Safety briefing happens at 8:30 am, with a wild ride in the Scooby Doo's for the new people. Or for anyone else that wants to go in it.

If you're new to this sort of thing, don't worry. Everyone is polite and should know the rules. If anyone is misbehaving they can be moved to a different group.

Relax. Have a top time. Any questions/concerns/insults, just PM me!

:D

ckdbrisk
07-02-2007, 20:46
I'll also need "Proper Names" so if you could PM me?

I'm trying to convice my brother to do this, as Combe is our local circuit and we haven't driven our own car there yet... unfortunately he doesn't seem very optimistic cos of the cost of our engine rebuild, but we may come along in our pug 306 just to meet a few people as we haven't been able to make any previous meets or events yet.

Is there an absolute dealine for this day, just incase I can convince him to come along?!

Of course - where would they need taking from? I imagine i could probably squeeze 2 in the boot, maybe 3 in the back, another 2 if I haven't got a passenegr and take the passenger seat out :)

Jacko was trying to convince me that having a random beam of metal for rear suspension was good. I just thought it was a step up from pram style leaf springs ;)

(in all seriousness, I'm sure a 205 or 309 GTI would out handle me ;) even if I wasn't captain slow)

Well my 309 has nasty chrome trim strips and a wood-rimmed steering wheel as standard :wack:

I have no illusions about being faster than a forced induction car, I just thought a standard 5 and the 309 should be a fairly even match :)

I'm hopefully going to get a ride with one of the MX5 lot so borrowed a helmet and got a camera to take photos of you lot...

Mids Si is coming down with me in his own car. He may well have some room. I'm still yet to have anything stolen at a trackday though :) (way to tempt fate).

All being well, I'll take some photo's as well. If I'd remembered, I'd of asked Coombe for media access as I have the insurance. I can't really do it now, as I don't have a printer. So you will all have to put up with slightly higher angle photos :)

As official 'Team Wallers' support vehicle i'm sure i can find space for tools :) I've got a socket set, torque wrench, breaker bar, trolley jack, and some bits and bobs, so you prob won't need that much. I'm happy to lend as long as i get them back :)

Car will have 4 wheels and the above stuff in the boot, but other than that, and a drivers seat (all others are in my loft for the day) I shall have room a plenty :)

Re. Cameras: Are we allowed them in the circuit? there's not some daft rule is there?

Reminder for everyone because there's always a few who forget: you must have your arms and legs completely covered, that means no t-shirts!

Massive thanks to Charlie for organising a great day :)

Aye agreed, Awesome day :D Loved every minute of it :D I loved Toyo Proxes R888 :smitten:

My highlights were Si shouting "Owned" at various cars. My favorites being, following the red Exige for about 15 mins, anihilating him in the corners but them being killed on the straights, yes he did have an instructor, who app. kept telling him he was braking too early and going to slow :wack: I didn't even mind that he didn't move over for me. The Silver R33 GTR, he powered past me, but then I kept being slowed in the corners for a couple of laps. Until the really quick MX5s came around :wack:

I didn't love some of the MX5 drivers etiquette. I also didn't love what we saw at Quarry. An Evo 9 FQ with the front drivers side mashed, then a Cobra with a mashed rear quarter. Worse followed. A really nice looking R32 GTR going about 30mph span on the huge trail of fluids left by the Evo and hit the wall

Aye - seconded on some of the driving - Just been watching some of the footage, and there's definitely a few iffy overtake on corners cutting across the path of the car in front type moves :(

Had a good time too :D I arrived just after lunch so must have missed some stuff (including a yellow S14 I saw some pics of)
It was a bit slow to start with with the Evo/Cobra/Skyline problem :( what's the official story on that accident?
I heard the Cobra got in a bit of trouble then the Evo following hit the back and caused them both to come off and then the Skyline following slipped on the Evos guts.
Sucks :(

Liked the sound of the Merc Kompressor thing which just sounded liek a monster.. but only after it has passed?
Oh and the red Audi turbo I want lots :wack:

My ride in one of the MX5's was interesting.. I didn't imagine it being quite so fast :P it reminded me of karting at Thruxton and made me think that there was no way on earth I would be able to take my S13 at the same speed unless I do some serious brake/handling upgrades.

I would liek to see some of the footage that was taken :P

I took a bunch of photos mostly of the MX5s and the few 200's, some are ok, some are a bit blurry tbh but it's not my camera and I didn't have anythign as nice as a tripod :)

Will post them up once i've sorted them out..

After having a chat with the guy in the Evo, he said that the cobra came out of the pits at about 60 pulled across on to the racing line in front of him, he tried to avoid him but couldnt. Looking at the Evo it is fixable new wing, bonnet, bumper and oil cooler

Oh and that really really sucks... Why was the Evo on the track before the Cobra? If I am understanding correctly..
I noticed a couple of cars leaving the pits and cutting a bit close in front of the cars already coming round the bend.

I didn't go too close to look at the Evo I thought i'd leave the guy to cry in a corner or something without me making "oooh tsss" noises but like you say it did look repairable from where I was standing as did the Cobra which looked almost untouched tbh.
The Skyline however looked a bit bad front end was probably mostly cosmetic though but I think I saw damage on the rear 1/4 too.

Saw some pics in the photographers bit and it looked quite sexy wish I had got to have a better look :)

Had a great day, even my partner enjoyed it and broke her track 'virginity' (go on, snigger).

The whole cobra thing... apparently the Evo driver was driving like a knob-jockey and clipped the cobra at 120mph+. That poor [lovely] AC cobra was on track for a whole 30 seconds - if that :( I didn't hear the cobra owners side of things, but the Evo guy was telling everyone the guy pulled in front of him.

I have a hoot of a time and finally got my car handling 'exactly' the way I wanted it to (i.e. very netrual). May I just say MY BRAKES ARE F&*KING SHOT! Dunno what I've done to them, but they were giving my brake wobble from the very first corner. It got so bad on 'hot' laps what I could hear the disc hitting the caliper  :ghey:

I'll pull it all apart tomorrow and investigate, but it almost sounds like they have a hairline crack in them.. and look glazed as arse.

DS2500 1 <-> Brembo M3 discs 0

I found driver ettequate to be excellent from the MX5 boys (and others).

I didn't enjoy the sessons thing at all.. open pit for me in future I think. I like to be able to go out when I want and stop and have a pee / bite to eat without worrying how long I have until I'm back on track.

Thanks for organising it guys

well I doubt he was hanging around and must have been using it as a test day so you need to push to get useable data; but fighting for position with the few cars in the CC saloons that can keep with it is a pretty damn impressive spectacle!

Did you get a look under the bonnet? it's so nicely prepared that even stood in the padock you get a feeling for a hell of a lot of performance waiting to be unleashed :D

From the Dynawotsit site:

2005 Dialynx builds new Audi A4 for circuit racing in BRSCC Castle Combe Saloon Championship

For 2005 Dialynx has built a new racer based on a 1.8 Turbo Audi A4 4 wheel drive saloon, entered in the Castle Coombe BRSCC Castle Combe Saloon Championship. The series format is a semi-roadgoing one, requiring road-legal tyres, standard gearbox and original engine block, although items such as the engine management and turbo can be changed. The racer is fitted with Motec M800 engine management and a modified turbo so that the car is now producing in excess of 350 bhp.

Looked like more than 350bhp to me but then i'm not a rolling road... or has it been improved since?

I tried several times to get a photo of its flames but failed everytime :P

well I think it weighs about as much as a flip-flop from looking at the shell prep and engine bay, so that will make a lot of difference; if they've got the weight down to about 1000kgs a 200sx would need 430bhp to have the same power to weight, and no disrespect but I think that guy probably knows the track and is a bit of a handier driver than any of the guys from :sxoc: who attended this day, no matter what we like to think of our own driving skills!

I'm not surprised to be honest as it leaves most of the field for dead on race days, so on a trackday it'll be even further ahead B)

Which reminds me, anyone know who the guy was filming from the pitlane, he had short dark hair and glasses in his 20's with a small digital camcorder, it looked as though he got alot of footage at least whilst I was there. Be good to track him down and get a look ;)

Oh and again, nice photos Wallers :) They look better than most of the ones I saw that were being sold there.. which were also a tad expensive imo.

That's Damson Devil.

I thought about buying a photo, but then I saw the prices :( It's a shame no one took pictures of me, apart from the offical guy, Photobox have a sale on at the moment, all poster prints up to 30x20 are £6.99

I'll let you off :) I could of had an infocus one instead of a slightly OOF series of pictures ;)

Eh? Which one, front or back? I do love how the light doesn't flow the same on the huge plastic bumpers on a 5. It makes them look scrapyard shonky!

Front one - is it just me then?! looks like the front is twisting and the back staying quite level - might just be my monday eyes :wack:

Hi, that's me :)

I don't think that it's twisting too badly, the rear's compressed a fair bit too :)
Here's a similar pic from a different angle, and a little later in the corner, and it looks loads better. :)

(a few more here: http://giryan.me.uk/gallery/v/Mx5s/CastleCoombe07/ )

But in general yeah the 5 does suffer because it's a soft top. :(

I was in group 4, the mostly non-MX5 group, and had a really great day :D
Highlights included overtaking the white 200SX ;) and nearly overtaking the DB2 :D the session ended about a lap too early otherwise I could have passed it.
I found that the group 4 was really nice to be in, the green SX was v. quick, great car :) and we all seemed to spread out quite quickly which was cool, as that way I got a bit more space, which was good as it was my first trackday. :)
(I hope I got out of the way of the quicker folks soon enough :) )

I had a couple passenger rides in group2, and was supprised at quite how bad that white 5 with all the decals was, he was overtaking people on loads of corners. :( (I don't think that he was one of our lot :) )

The understeer at the end was caused by the water the yellow MX5 droped on the track.
I did something very similar to you in my MX5, saw the 911 on the grass thought why is he there turned in and had a whole load of oversteer which saw fun if a bit thought provoking

Yeah :O
I was beginning to get the hang of quite how quickly I could actually go round tower, when I came down into the braking zone there, and had both fronts lock up, eased off, turned in, and it was really rather hairy as I was deciding I really really didn't want to loose it, as the only safe place there was to loose it into was full of Porsche!

It was £5/photo to get them on CD, min 4 photos, which I didn't think was bad compared to the price of the prints.
(That's where the photo up there ^^^ is from)

I completely agree with everything you have said :D ;) After the first session I finally got a long standing oversteering problem ironed out and I was loving every lap. Even my Mrs enjoyed looning it around, alas my brakes didn't... :ghey:

But you're right, group 4 was great and once spread out you had both the thrill of pushing your car to the limits and overtaking a few people en-route too  I think the etiquette in our group was far better from hearing peoples comments?

edit: erm, people aren't hot linking to Wallers host are they? there appears to be a database limit, which will get swallowed up very quickly if pictures are hot-linked
