To tell the truth, if you dont know much about TCP/IP, you dont stand a chance of getting a firewall to work porperly. They are ALL a pain in the arse.

The free ones will be. They're free for a reason (not very user friendly). I personally use Norton Personal Firewall. User friendly if you want it that way but also VERY configurable if you know what you're doing. It's not free but only about £19.99

When I say user friendly I mean to a non-techie. I wouldn't exactly call smoothwall friendly. Well from the version I used anyhow, it may have improved :)

Best firewalls are these:

Tiny/Kerio
Outpost
Sygate

I use sygate myself cos it is the quickest no fannying about, but for security (if you know what you are doing) Tiny is king.

Yep, another vote for Sygate. Used to use Zonealarm but it was too tempremental.

I use Sygate, which is fairly user friendly for a non techie type and works well. Download it here (http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/3000-2092-10144440.html?tag=lst-0-1)

I've set up Smoothwall in work as a firewall/router and ZoneAlarm on all the desktops just for a bit of overkill :D Can't be safe enough if you ask me! I quite like ZoneAlarm. Use it at home as well. Once configured you can pretty much leave it alone to do it's thing.
